| As in "Why are we here, on earth, living our lives, and for what purpose?"
If so, I have to answer this based on my faith, and my answer is... To glorify God and enjoy him for all my days.
The way I see it, if I strive to live my life the way that God sets for me in the bible, I will be the best husband, brother, son and friend I can be. I will always try and do what is good and right ( I wont always succeed, of course, but that's what forgiveness is for right?!?) and treat people the way I would want to be treated ( This doesn't meant that I will let people walk all over me or my loved ones though!!).
If I can live my life according to that one simple sentence, then I belive I will have lived life to the fullest and my life (however long or short it is) has been a great one!
Sorry if that sounded to "churchy" for anyone!!

| well, if evolutionists are right, we have no choice.. we are but a progression in the development of slime mold and as time progresses, we'll likely evolve to some other form .. so can you hold that question for another million years or so?
looking ahead a million into the future using my magic dobe-ball : <queue mysterious music> plant-human-dog evolved creature 1 to plant-human-dog(doberman) evolved creature 2: "why are we here?"...

| I believe basically in the same thing as people who have had near-death experiences. I think we existed in a spirit form before choosing to be born, and that we have this life for certain learning experiences. I think we are meant to be as kind and helpful to others as possible, including animals . I don't know what my life is supposed to be about, or to teach me, but I sincerely hope it is not the loss of a child. If so then I want out of my contract.
I think there is a god, but that he is a god that predates religion (so I am not a Christian, or Muslim, or Hindu) and is like nothing we could ever imagine or write about as mere humans. People who have had near-death experiences are in awe of him, and what I find interesting is Christians find him to be Christ, Hindus find him to be one of their gods, atheist also see him, but as one researcher said a Hindu never sees Jesus. So the experience is the same across the world and different cultures, but is interpreted according to your own beliefs.
What I think I love the most is that the people have said you review you life, feeling how you have made others feel. And you can see clearly all the times you could have done something good and didn't. Many say it is the small things that really counted, whether good or bad. The people felt like it was more of a learning experience than a judgement.
Odin's Master - you didn't sound to churchy at all. I think that was a nice sentiment.
dobermans rule - I believe in evolution. I am not sure how it all fits together, but I do believe that if god exists he is a god of science. |

i'm not religious. i was raised Catholic, but i truly believe religion is something humans created to better understand the world around them, as well as to give them structure and "rules" for living. science is our new religion. eventually, something may supplant science.
i don't believe we exist for any particular purpose. life evolved. i'm certain similar evolutionary "miracles" happened on other planets in other solar systems. |

| 'Why are we here?'
Well I'm here because I can't sleep. .
But seriously I honestly don't know the answer.
I mean i wonder sometimes if there is a god why he/she/it allows things like the Connecticut massacre to happen. Then my logical side kicks in and says, because he/she/it doesn't exist, so fact is we had best learn real quick how to prevent it happening again and not sit back and expect some divine being to sort out our mess
Personally I live by the creed, live as best you can without stomping on the flowers as you pass through life.
It works for me. |

I don't ponder it much, maybe more than my agnostic husband. We were raised right, have good values, and just try to be the best we can.
Now, I do plan on rejoining my dogs at the bridge, just so you know!!
Oh, and to answer the question, I am here to help animals. There are other people on earth who choose to help people more.

| | Alpha | I don't know why we are here any more than I know where we go when we "leave" here.
It sure would make accepting the "leaving" a whole lot easier if I believed that the "leaving" was better than the "staying".
Especially when I have to make the decision for some other living thing to "leave" here.

| You know this is quite a difficult question for me to answer. Who knows why we are here? I certainly don't. You have to ask the question to what purpose do we as "homo sapiens" serve to the planet? Maybe that is a more prudent question to ask people. I certainly can't think of a viable reason for our purpose then to live, reproduce and then die, lets face it that is pretty much all most people achieve before they do die.
But in a rough way of answering your initial question, have you seen Prometheus? Them bad a$$ aliens put us here because they didn't like us! |

| I mean, obviously I'm here because the process of evolution created humans, and then my ancestors found each other, thousands of years passed, and then a really interesting New Year's Eve party happened and 9 months later I was born. But as to why I'm here?
I don't know. I'm not really awake enough to provide any sort of an esoteric answer.
So I'm just going to go with 'tequila' as the correct answer, since that probably played a large part in my creation and is a great asset to my life right now. Margaritas, anyone? |

But I believe I am here to be the best person I can be and to raise my daughter to be the best person she can be. I also believe I am here to help the animals that need me. I truly believe that we all have our niche. Something that we excell in... It has been my passion to rescue and protect animals since I was a wee little kid and I have continued to do so all my life. Anyone who know my daughter knows she's a chip off the old block! |

| most likely because we are the happy accident resulting from billions of years of fairly random yet intricately interconnected physical and chemical reactions that resulted in various universes, dimensions, galaxies, solar systems and planets, and combinations of atmospheres and surface conditions that allowed silly little microbes to flourish and mutate and try out all sorts of crazy creatures like dinosaurs, and fish with lanterns on rods over their heads, and insects that will not die... and a super-brained weakling with a penchant for inventing things and trying to destroy each other and everything else in its environment, for $h*ts and giggles.
