| helping a DT Sandy victim? hi... some of the rescue elves want to help our friend sorceress_mage and her Dobe, Hero, whose home was pretty massively damaged by Hurricane Sandy, and Hero had to be in a rescue setting temporarily, until it was safe for him to go back home. He lost a lot of weight, got kennel cough, and all the toys his mommy sent along with him for comfort were lost or stolen. if anyone would like to participate in trying to help our friends be a bit more comfortable and secure, please PM me, and we'll see what we can do to help a little bit. they currently have electricity again (finally!), but no heat yet (not till some time in January?), and lots of their things were lost or destroyed (including their roof!). lois

| We sent you a PM and asked for any special requests and/or needs?
It is times like this, when we "know" someone devasted by an event, that we just have to say, "Thank you".
And appreciate that our car starts, even if used.
Our spouse is healthy, even if grouchy in AM.
Our jobs are ok, even if the people are a challenge
Our house is intact, even if it needs some new paint.
Our cell phones work, even if one beeped at 4:30 AM with a wrong #.
Our family is ok, even if Christmas is going to be full of dynamics.
We have heat, even if it gets a little cold at night.
That we can eat dinner in our house, even if someone overcooked the soup.
That our Dog is home, with us, even if he ran from one end of the house to the other on our cleaned hard wood floors with muddy paws.
He was so happy!
And, we are so appreciative.
Thank you. |

Most likely they were denied because the basement isn't consider "essential" to living. But the roof or damage in "livable" spaces could be eligible. As much as I hate to admit it, the application process is severely flawed. It is very subjective of how the info was input. Due to this is could have also been denied for missing information or improper information. One can ONLY qualify if you apply and are turned down for a small business loan and if you do not have flood insurance. That's the beginning, if denied make sure you appeal, the information should be in the denial letter. They need to locate a DRC (disaster recovery center). It is a one stop shop, at least at the beginning, they can apply for everything.
In major disaster areas the states will often have appliance replacement programs.
Red Cross should be able to help with gift cards to get clothing and food. FEMA can also help with rental assistance (they sometimes don't have to move if they qualify). Banfield vet hospital was seeing pets for free initially maybe that's an option.
They can call the manufacturer of the dog food they are using and I bet they will send them free food or have something set up.
Help is out there and it's hard to ask and it's a lot of red tape, but persistence does prevail. I know, or at least know someone that does <w>.

| Hello everyone:
I have indeed been overwhelmed by the outpouring of this community. Hero is already enjoying several things he has received (toys and such)mand will now keep his nice coat due to the salmon oil he just received. I don't have the words or know the right strength of words to convey how I am feeling by all this kindness. But when I am up on my feet, I want to donate a Kuranda bed to the ASPCA for taking in Hero when I didn't know where to turn.
Hero is very happy with all the added attention he has been receiving and I am afraid he thinks that any package that comes in here is for him. I had to tell him more than once, no this is the human's medicines and has nothing to do with you. |

| You guys are just too much. No matter what anyone says about DT (negatively anyway), they're just plain wrong.
I received many packages and everything was needed and some unanticipated needs were met as well. Mrs. K you outdid yourself. I specifically mentioned only if someone had an old used one. I would never expect a new one from someone. You are too much. I started crying again when I opened the package. I know you are all supposed to be secret elves, but the jig is up. lol I will try to stay in that vein by not saying who sent what but to thank them so much for their generosity.
I must say the snood made my and Ellen's day. Hero looks so adorable in it even though he is not used to it yet. The red fleece coat fit him rather well and he looks handsome in it. Sorry I don't have pictures as the camera was in the car from the show and the car was totally immersed. The extra towels will come in handy. Hero will have quite a few of my old towels for his feet (I still don't like what is on the ground here so constant bathing of the paws is a must).
Such cute hats, scarfs, and gloves. So far Hero likes his treats. I'm using the small cookie ones to teach him to touch today. I want to expand it to: "Close the door" because he is constantly leaving the room for a few minutes and letting the cold air into the room. I've seen him get up just to open the door ajar and then going back to the couch and going to sleep. Aaaarghhh.
And, due to you guys, all of us will be much healthier. I have been very remiss about vitamins, but to be here for Hero and Ellyn, I had better start taking better care of myself and having those vitamins on hand I will no longer have an excuse.
Oh, another positive point, Rapid Repair finally came today and are ordering a boiler for us. It maybe 3 to 5 more days before they can get started installing it and that will probably take about 3 days if I can remember rightly. We had only bought a new one for $9,000 3 years ago. This is free in place of any extra FEMA money we could claim and frankly we are more than tired negotiating with construction people--just want it done and over with. Enough of the freezing!!!
Hero just reminded me to thank you for the toys--he loves them!! And I am mentally hugging each and everyone of you!!! |
