Unhappy Tonsillitis

Urgh, I feel so ill!! I've had tonsillitis for 5 days now and nothing I seem to do can make it feel any better.

Im currently taking x2 paracetamol and ibuprofen every 4 hours, and its seeming to have no effect Doctors say I cant take any more because of my weight. Also using those throat sprays, throat sweets and honey in tea but with no luck!

Has anyone got any suggestions for what can help?

Sorry to hear that! No fun especially right before the holidays.

Try gargling with warm salt water a few times throughout the day.

Have you tried cold yet to sooth it, maybe sucking on a popsicle?

Just a couple ideas that I can think of for now. Hope you feel better soon!

my partner and every true Scot I meet swear by whisky hot toddies

To make a whisky based hot toddy, measure 1/4 cup of whisky, 1/4 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of fresh-squeezed lemon juice into a mug. Microwave the mixture until it's hot.
I add hot water to mine as I'm not that keen on whisky.

If nothing else it will help you sleep and be happy lol.

So sorry you are not feeling well. Everyone else suggested what I had in mind. If it makes you feel any better, DH and I have been fighting awful colds. Me for over a week and he for just a few days. Guess I gave it to him! Hoping you feel better soon.

are you sure it's tonsils, versus a sore throat? salt water or epsom salts gargle is good, and whether tonsils or throat, plenty of vitamin C... and put fresh lemon in your tea and honey. if you have access to pure, unfiltered, raw honey, it is a natural antibiotic, plus very soothing, so a little bit melting down your throat 3-4 times a day isn't a bad thing. i'd stay away from popsicles and other sugary things, as processed sugar is acidic, which can irritate already irritated membranes.

oh... and (imo) they don't call chicken soup "Jewish penicillin" for nothing!

What no anti-biotics?
As has been suggested, natural honey is natures cure for many things, sore throats and infected tonsils included.
Try making Thyme tea. Use a teaspoon of thyme to a cup of hot water, leave to steep and strain (the bits aren't nice to try and swallow) allow liquid to cool then gargle with tea throughout the day. (you an drink but I don't particularly like it, so I spit it out).
Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the well wishes and ideas everyone! And Lois hope you and your OH feel better soon!

I'm not 100% sure it's toncilitis I just guessed it was; my throat area is really swollen up and white and it's really painful to swallow, the pain is now through my whole jaw and in my ears too. Today is day 6 and the pain has been pretty constant. Also have had headache (but think that's probably from being stuck inside all the time watching tv!) Never had a really bad throat/toncilitis before.

Wow, I didn't know strep throat can be transferred between humans/dogs! Rupert and Tobey seem fine, but they have both been snuggled up pretty close in bed with me for the last week. Maybe I'll make them sleep at the end of the be instead, just incase...

I had tonsillitis for most of my childhood. There finally out now
But the best thig for me was dry toast no butter.
The flem used to kill me of a night and the toast helped scrape it off.
I didn't like ice cream as a kid nor honey and I refused to gargle salt water without vomiting lol! But yeah dry toast was awesome!
Also fishermans friends did the trick but believe me they are disguisting!!

Hope it goes away soon as i know how you feel it's not nice!

I'm probably going to sound like your mum here but go & see a doctor girl.
If it's been going on for 6 days now you probably need some antibiotics. I don't know how you've stood it that long, I'd have been at the Dr's days ago.
Hope you start to feel better soon, Tonsilitis can be really horrible.

My Mum gives me what she calls a Brandy Mac when I am poorly with colds/flu. Its a shot of brandy with Crabbies Ginger beer(alcoholic type). The only time she gave me it was when I was 17 and totally racked full of proper flu. I got half way down the glass and forgot totally about being ill anymore because I was practically wasted lol but it certainly made me feel better!

Can the docs not give you antibiotics?

is it possibly a 'wisdom' tooth issue?

I wasnt gonna bother going to the doctors, whenever I go in there they always say 'Well see how it is in a week or so' no matter whats wrong LOL so I thought i'd give it atleast a week first. Plus google tells me that most of the time it doesnt need antibiotics so fingers crossed!

I dont think its teeth issues, I do have wisdom teeth coming through but thats a different kind of pain. Here the pain is in my throat rather than jaw, the pain is just kinda leaking over...

Been living on rice pudding for the last few days Getting kinda sick of it now!

White spots in the back of your throat may be a sign of strep throat also you usually have a high temperature. I had strep throat the first 5 years I worked in hospitals then just quit getting it ???

I had tonsillitis for over a year before they finally took them out in 2010. I ate a lot of slushies, or icies not sure what you may call them but I also ate scratchy foods like toast, it hurt terribly but it felt good afterwards. I also gargled a lot of mouth wash to kill some of the bacteria in my throat. Mine got to the point where my tonsils were so inflamed and swollen that solid food couldn't pass through.

Oh my goodness, I am not one to run to the doctor over every lil' thing but my dear, please run don't walk and get yourself to the doctor. Dentist after, if needed, but DOCTOR first and right away. Don't mess with infections like that, it can spread to other parts of the body and your system is weak right now. RUN, RUN to the doctors office, please. I read your posts and have respect for your opinions, don't let me down : ) to the doctor with you.
