| The College Thread I can't help but notice that DT seems to have a lot of college students. I'm always so curious to know what you guys are majoring in, where you go if you want to share that much, etc. Or, heck, even what your degree's in or what you do, if you're done or never went.
I'll start. I'm a social work student at IUPUI.
Now...go!

| This is a good idea! I want to know what people are up to!
I am 17, so a year younger than my graduating class, but I am a music major (piano) at the University of Calgary. I am hoping to become a music score composer, or something related to music education! |

Maybe 2015 | Lol, working doberman for the win! I agree 100% with what you're wanting. Sounds just like me! I will definitely be traveling though, just not sure where I could go out of the country wise haha.
I've got a year to decide which dog I'm going to take and whether or not I want a puppy in addition to that (Highly unlikely, puppies are too much work). So although I won't be traveling and competing with the dog yet, I will have a new working doberman at home studying with me december 2013!
There are soooo many seminars all over the place that I want to go to, so I can't wait to finally be able to go to them! |

I've maintained a 103% average in the class all f'ing semester, only to have her throw a complete and total curveball on our last major exam.
I was a veterinary assistant for years and will never, ever, ever! go back. I intended to go to school for a vet tech degree all along, but in this state it's pointless. The degree isn't required for the exact same work here (don't get me wrong - I absolutely think that it should be, but the fact that it isn't required or even wanted makes a really bad clinic culture), clinics have zero incentive to hire RVTs, so if they do they might make $1.00 an hour more than they did as an assistant...maybe, and they're doing the exact same work. So you're paying off $30,000 in debt on a $22,000 a year salary, and staying so burnt out jumping through clinic owner's hoops that you never have time to actually do anything to help animals, if that's why you thought you were there. It was go home after a 14 hour day on day 9 of a 16 day stretch, shower off the blood and anal glands, eat for the first time since 7am, sleep and do it again. I couldn't even own a dog - no time. Never met an RVT in this state who didn't regret their degree. I had the pleasure of working for a doctor who was not a tyrant, respected her staff, and knew her stuff for 2 years...but, alas, she was not the clinic owner. The clinic owner was horrible. Seems like they always are. I hope and pray that the vet tech situation is only this way here, because God knows we need some good ones.
And now, I will instead be working in child welfare, with plenty of time to actually have a dog and volunteer to help others. I hate our veterinary field in this state.

| Yikes Brianne! Sounds like a terrible experience for you. I have no interest in working at a typical clinic so hopefully I don't run into that. I'd prefer a government job that hopefully has better pay, hours, and benefits. I've worked animal care jobs for the past 6 years so I'm used to crappy schedules and long hours.
I've worked at a clinic before and they were going to teach me on the job to be a vet tech, they also offered to pay some of schooling to get registered. I've also applied for tech jobs and have been passed up by registered techs. Hopefully by the time I graduate I'll be able to offer a lot since I have on the job experience and will have the book smarts to go along with it. There's no way a vet at a clinic would have the time to teach me all the in-depth stuff I'm learning in school.
Hopefully in time vet techs will be required to be registered and that will increase the demand for them and will make them more valuable and = the pay they deserve!! It's insane how much work a vet tech has to do and gets paid so poorly, yet a person going into human medicine can just learn one thing for 2 years as their career path and make a good living. |

As bad as it sounds, I hate hearing people going into it just because they love animals. If you love animals, have some! Volunteer with some! There are a million options. People need to know that you will work with people more than animals, and most of the time you care more about their pets than they do. The animals that they love will bite the hell out of them and then die. Even if the stars align and you and the owner are on the same page, odds are the vet's not and that's the most frustrating of all. I really think that there should be a mandatory two year internship in some kind of rescue organization before you can even think about it. Our state's laws are horrible for techs and assistants, but some of the realities are everywhere. And you are so right, on the job training cannot possibly take the place of the real education. It's terrifying when people believe that it can. I have no doubt that you will be awesome.
