Well Brianne, much like you I am also a social work student here at the University of Manitoba, and I'm minoring in sociology. Just basic sociology right now, thinking of getting into criminology over the next year or so.

I am a fellow social worker in Canada. What exactly are you planning as your career path in child welfare? My fair warning for you is if you plan on working in child protection you will have very long days, a lot of stress and crisis to deal with.

I'm not trying to discourage you but give some reality on the situation. I do this here and am supposed to work 830 to 430 but I usually work until 7 or 8 dealing with my families or whatever crisis has popped up. I have my own family and Coco to deal with when I get home.

I've been doing this for 10 years and I really enjoy working with my families and seeing positive gains being made and maintained but its not easy work!

When will you be done school? Good luck!

Wow, Coco Loco, that is a challenging field. My sister works at Lakeridge Health in NICU. She says, if you think her job is hard, check out the child welfare people that are involved in newborn cases.

A fellow Oklahoman! I went to Connor St. College in Warner (all three of my brothers went to Northeastern in Talequah, and one also went to Bacone in Muskogee). I grew up in the Muskogee area, obviously.

My B.S. is in Information Sciences from Robert Morris University. My M.B.A. is from Villanova University. I'd really like to go back and get my PhD - I just have no idea how I'd pay for it other than taking out loans.

Ha! I think I might give it a try when BF is done with school. I have to go to Chiro school first though

BS in Animal Vet Science (Pre-vet program) at WVU

Did not continue to vet school (long story, but decided it was not what I wanted to do after interning with both large and small animal vets), but do currently work in the Agriculture field.

I went to UC Davis to "be a vet." By the 2nd semester of Animal Science I started to realize maybe it wasn't For me. After volunteering in the small animal clinic and almstop assing out at the site of blood, I realized it was not for me. I was an Animal Science major for 2 years. Graduated with a BS in Nutrition. Work as an Asst to the CEO not using my degree at all

I'm graduating in May as an RVT. I went to college right out of HS and got an associates in education. Got married and the plan was for husband to finish his degree first (business marketing and international politics) and I would apply to the tech program after that. I took be a while to get here but I'm almost done!

Coco Loco, Department of Child services. My MIL is a supervisor there and has worked in child welfare for years and years, so luckily I have the resources to know exactly what I'm getting into. Our DCS is not half as bad as most where crazy hours and that kind of thing is concerned, but the emotional burnout is something that is, of course, everywhere. Our particular department has an unusual number of buffers in place, in my opinion, to keep good social workers on board, which is very nice.

I'm not in college currently, but I am still in school! I graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelors in biology and psychology and I am currently in my second year of medical school! Two more years to go!
