| New Toy Okay, I just got my anniversary/Christmas/birthday/Valentine's Day present. Before I start playing with it though, I want to run it by the DT photgraphers. I got a Nikon D5100, with a couple of lenses (AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and Nikkor AF-S Zoom 55-200mm f/4-5.6). I had the choice between that, or a Canon Eos Rebel T3 with its kit lenses. Now, I'm kind of second guessing myself, though. Keeping in mind that I'm going from using a fully manual film SLR to a DSLR with more bells and whistles than I currently know what to do with, do you think I would have been fine with either of them? Or does the slightly higher megapixel count and the nifty little flip screen on the Nikon make it a better deal?
I'm sure I'd have fun with either camera, but the Nikon was about $100 more than the Canon.

| I cannot really speak on if one was a better deal than the other, sorry, but I do LOVE my Nikon. I'm glad I got a Nikon over a Canon. Now, I do have a friend who has a Nikon with the flip screen and she LOVES having it - said she'd never go back to a camera without one.
That being said, now that you have a DSLR you sure as hell better be taking more pictures of your dogs. Especially Ilka who, I think, is absolutely beautiful. Looooove you, Rosemary

| I'm a Rebel fan, but that's more of a personal preference I've had for a long time. Overall imo when you get into the nice quality upper hand dslr's like the rebel and the D5's you can't go wrong on anything but personal preference on small features, something it sounds like your already happy with
I agree with patchwork too, more pictures!
P.S.
If you're looking for a nice editing software, I have a free program, Gimp, since I can't decide what I want to spring for as far as photoshop/lightroom/etc... It's really nice and simple for the first time person and I think helpful for when I upgrade to have used it first.
Can't wait to see what you shoot!

| OMG, I just read through the instruction manual. It's 82 pages long. Frankly, I'm a bit intimidated.

| Honestly, I just learned by doing and referred to the manual when I had a question. Not the best way, perhaps, but it took less time, lol

| Manuals are for schmuks lol i've always self taught myself most all camera/computer/phone/ techno things. Why read about it when I can get my hands "dirty" and learn by doing.
P.s. my first pictures with my camera.....yuck! but boy have I progressed/am progressing.
HAVE FUN! that's the most important part

Serously, when I got my Minolta SR-T 101 (back in '95) I was terrified of it. I had never used anything but little p/s cameras, and all of a sudden, I had to figure out how to combine ISO, aperture, and shutter speed to get a decent picture. Well, that camera has been my all-time favorite. I'll probably be using it until one of us dies.

I'm just more of a hands on person, I like to figure things out like a puzzle, if I read the books it's like buying a map or cheating lol

| Okay... I cheated, and put it on auto. First picture. Second picture. Trouble. Geraniums. More Geraniums. Lucky. Focus is a little off. My pretty girl. More of my pretty girl. This is T-Max. Anyone get the irony? T-Max again. Hey, she was posing sooo pretty.
I probably took about 50 or so shots, but these are the only ones I kept. I could get used to this.

| Ooooh congrats in the nice present I found a lot of helpful tips by reading blogs and photography forums when I was wondering how to achieve a certain look. I have only had a Canon Rebel so I can't speak about the Nikon, but I did have a camera with a flip screen in high school and it was an AWESOME feature. I miss it dearly. |

| Congrats to you! I'm a Canon user (too many $$ lenses to feasibly switch), but I LOVE the Nikons. There's something about the saturation and lighting (even on auto) that just kicks the Canon's @ss.
Meh...I hate flip screens. I never use them. I believe in viewfinders!

However, it'll be nice to not have to stand on my head to get a low-angle shot.

| Quick question for ya rosemary, you still shoot/were still shooting with film right?
My mom has a Cannon Rebel 2000, i was pretty jealous when she got it, and i'd love to still use it but i'm not sure if I can still get film/get it developed anymore...any ideas?
Oh do I wish it was digital, it'd pretty much be my dream camera

| I shot a ton more today, but haven't even looked at them yet. Maybe later this evening I'll go through and pick out the keepers, and zap the rest. That is one thing I was really looking forward to about digital, not having to burn through 4 or 5 rolls to get 3 or 4 shots worth keeping.
So.... I mentioned that there is something ironic about the pictures of the black and white kitty. Has anyone caught on yet?

Oh do I wish it was digital, it'd pretty much be my dream camera | I'll do mostly digital just because it's faster and cheaper, but I'll probably shoot film as long as they keep making it. Anytime I really want a challenge, I pull out my Yashica A TLR.
You can buy film through B&H, Adorama, Porters, and the like with no problem (that's how I get the 120 film for my TLR camera). Finding someone local to develop is trickier, though. I'm lucky, and have a great camera shop only a 30 minute drive away that does in-house developing and printing of both 35mm and 120 film. However, there are several mail order labs that fo film. Just check the ads in Shutterbug magazine.
ETA: If you know anyone who needs 620 film, B&H sells it. It's basically 120 film that has been respooled on to the correct size spool. Pricey, but worth it if you want to use an antique folding camera.

| Well, I've had some fun over the last few days. I like how you can play with the effects in the camera. This is the best $18 I've spent on her. She LOVES this ball. More Teaser Ball. This is the original. This is the cyanotype version. Dont we look comfy? I see you.
And here's a couple of Leo, just for the heck of it. Original. Sepia tone.
ETA: The irony about the black and white cat in the previous post is that her name is T-Max, after the Kodak film, and I took the photos with a digital camera.
