Calling all Canadians and nosey people, advice, help etc

Well I got a call for a job in Canada, located in Edmonton Alberta.
Now I know virtually nothing about Canada, so any descriptions, advice, pro's cons etc are welcome regarding: the country, Alberta, edmonton, cost of living, standard of living house prices etc. well anything at all really.

Thanks in advance

Matt

I live in Calgary, Alberta; south of Edmonton. I think Alberta is great! But I am biased and think that Calgary is better than Edmonton (city rivalry lol). The cost of living is fairly high, I'm not sure where you are coming from and how it compares. Housing depends very much on the location, as in most cities. But in general Canadians are quite friendly (well I think they are!) and if you are moving to Canada, Alberta has the most opportunities for jobs.

Also there are lots of dog parks!

Steph and Leala.

Edmonton is the murder capital of Canada, just so you know.

As a native Albertan, I wouldn't live there, ever.

Alberta has no PST, the only province in Canada.

Prices are high compared to, say, the US, but salaries (overall) are much higher as well.

Matt
I am from Edmonton, born and raised. I live about 3 hrs north east in Cold Lake right now due to being military.

Average house prices are around $330,000 I think in edmonton, depending on where you are looking at. To find any kind of acerage you are looking at $500,000 + and probably 45 mins to an hour out of edmonton. Gas is at $0.99/L. I would say groceries are pretty standard price, milk is about $4/4L jug.

There is already snow here and has been since before Halloween. It is not unusual to have snow in oct and I have had many birthday's in my life where snow was on the ground (my birthday is 8 May). Summers are usually hot and dry. there are quite a few lakes around Edmonton for summer fun. I would say the average temp in winter is -20C. It does get down to -40C and lower, but we have also had thaws in feb with no snow. So hard to predict.

The greater Edmonton area (including suberbs) I think is around 1 million.

Edmonton has lots of green space and a great trail system for walking the dogs, and many off leash parks.

Calgary is the metropolitian city in Alberta (sooo if you are "metro" you live there, lol), Edmonton is the working class town.

Edmonton is known as the "festival" city, we have tons of festivals in the summer (folk music fest, street performers, fringe fest, jazz and blues fests, etc)

The city is 3.5hrs from Jasper in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, or 4hrs to Banff. 7 some odd hours to the USA border on the Montana state. 12 hr drive to Vancouver, BC on the west coast. 3 hrs to Calgary.

Edmonton hosts the Canadian Finals rodeo this time every year, and has the Capital EX, which is like a huge fair.

It is also home to West Edmonton Mall, which used to be the biggest indoor mall in the world. <---altho not one actual resident of Edmonton every goes there, that place isa zoo!!.

There is a NHL hockey team (altho maybe not for much longer, there is talk of moving the oilers to Seattle), a CFL football team, a AAA hockey team, uummm I think some kind of soccer but prolly not any kind of major soccer.

What other questions do you have?

I too am from Edmonton and I love it here.... Don't listen to those silly narcissistic Calgarians. As long as you're ok with the cold winters you'll be fine!

@ Steph&leala: thanks, yes most canadians I have met have been really nice. i used to work with some for a Canadian nickel company.

@ emilyb- for real, murder capital, just my luck, how does that compare to like Manchester, Glasgow or London in uk? I've stayed/worked in some gnarly places all over the world so it doesn't bother me but I'm pretty sure my OH wouldn't like that and not the sort of thing you wanna hear if you have kids, I moved where I am now to get away from lunatics!.

@ Sonterra 2002- thanks thats really good info, thank you, house prices seem cool and fuel is awesome price! It hasn't been that low for years here.
-40c, , holy crap that's cold! Please tell me the summer is better!
Festivals sound cool to me, along with trails (and I take it wildlife a bit more wild than here)
Mountain biking should be good too I would guess?- My OH has some more questions for you she is writing them down now.

@Shelly- I'm not sure, I havn't really worked in temperatures as low as that for long periods, it used to get pretty low in the north sea but I don't think it was that low!

I have one big question though, are staffies banned in Canada? I heard that Pitties were, or have I got that wrong? and is it hard for me to import my dogs?

I think you'd love Alberta. If Kath were to decide that she was iffy about Edmonton, then you could live outside town & commute.

The outdoor stuff is amazing, there is tons of space to do things.

I'd recommend looking at the schools, but I think you'd be pleased. Also - the kids won't have any issues getting summer jobs, there are lots of opportunity for employment.

Yes I would prefer not to go back to living in a city but Kath may not agree.....

As if by majic, questions from Kath:

what areas should we avoid? (for buying houses I think she means)

what is the cost of health care?

how to enroll in school? (she found something that has confused her about points (?)

Pacific Standard Time. Unless that's not the right PST they are referring to. I think Alberta is on mountain time.

I assume that whoever is hiring you will take care of immigration/work permits whatever. This will give you health care. It's covered & your company may have extra benefit plans.

I don't know Edmonton enough to tell you which areas to look for and avoid - and I'm not certain that you should be living in town instead of in some amazing countryside. (Where is the job offer & how close is it to someplace like Red Deer for instance?)

How old are the kids - you are going to want to do some individual school research before you move there, but our public schools are generally pretty good. (Public = school for everyone & you don't need to look for different schools after A levels, they usually have both college/work streams & university streams.)

Matt - take your wallet, and keep it open...lol...with GST and another 150 hidden taxes...still a GREAT place to live, w/FREE medical 24/7.
- CDN..most safe place (on earth)...we can't carry arms...only a few bad guys, have thrm

In Ontario, our goods & services HST tax, is now 13%:
- povincial tax is 8%
- Federal tax is 5%
- plus Income Tax & Property Tax & Gas Tax + TAx + Tax + Tax + more Tax...up your "wing-wang"

Still a great place to raise dobers & children & family, if one does not mind working hard / to pay for the lazy F***'s on Welfare.
- and don't get mad w/our useless goverment members, with their $1M pension plan (for 6 years, of Capital Hill sleep)

Oh - and a friend who lives in London says that he finds that day to day prices are actually fairly similar, except for eating out - which is waaay cheaper in Toronto.

2 Litre Pepsi (not that I drink it) is about $2 - but you can usually find it on sale for $1.

Gas is $1.19 per litre in Toronto, but it's been ranging up and down between $1.15 and $1.40. Still cheaper than in the UK.

You are either going to have to drive, or live close to work/schools/shopping.

Our beer is served cold.

Probably grade 6/7 & 10? So middle school of some sort & high school is what you'd be looking at.

There is lots or information online - but will the company fly you out for an interview & give you a chance to have a look around, or do you have to make the decision blind?

Sun News : Edmonton murder capital of Canada

You can probably google around to see what neighborhoods to stay away from. I know in our city it is pretty much the entire NE section of the city.

Staffies are welcomed with open arms in Alberta.

it's cold and snows 9 months of the year.

but after you pay your taxes, you'll get everything for free. We hope to achieve this in the US as well.
