well I am just having so much fun putting some thoughts/stories.......... to 'pen'/notepad on the computer.

so I think I have found my genre.

Humour.

this thread has made me think about what I want to do when I 'retire'.

I have never thought about what I would do, if I no longer do, what I have always done................

i must be getting........................... old

It does...especially when you're looking at the graph on the web site.

Examples of books that are 50k words long are The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men. Comparably short books, when you're holding them in your hands, especially if you've devoured (or plowed through) books like Moby Dick or Lord of the Rings.

50k is a lot. But, a goal is a goal. If your goal is just to write every day, then do that, and forget about what the number is. Just have fun with it, explore your writing thoughts (like Darkevs ), and feel good about making the effort.

even my stick figures are pitiful.

so.

NO, I do not draw.

except in my mind.

but I am sure I know someone, who knows someone, who can do the illustrations.

a childrens book would be easy.....just lots of simple drawings and lots of colors.

Well, you can always tell what I'm drawing. You know. Just how you can tell what a 5 year old is drawing

It is very childishly written and as such hit the market right on the head.
I'm pretty sure a teenager could have written those books.

Talented writers are people like Aldous Huxely, George Orwell- all of them, F Scott Fitzgerald- to kill a mocking bird, John steinbeck, H.G Wells, Isaac azimov blah blah blah.

They will be remembered for amazing writing, J.K Rowling will be remembered for making millions. Such is the shift in our society. JMO

I couldn't read the Harry Potter books. Too many adverbs on the page I happened to view (darkly, purplely, etc.). I want to read about wizards, I read Tolkein. Or Lev Grossman's The Magicians and the sequel The Magician King (I do hope more are coming).

Now obviously, some of this is sour grapes. I'd've loved for the horrible fantasy novel I wrote to have made me a kajillion dollars. None of my writing, to date, has made me any money (though the dog blog might here, eventually).

Hey, once you get past the adverbs and adjectives, the Harry Potter books might grow on you. I was only going to read the first one to see what all the fuss was about. All seven books were already out by the time I read the first one, mind. By the fifth page, I was hooked. I wound up reading all seven books in ten days.

I still might yet try them; the elements of story that I've heard about them are certainly the type of thing that appeal to me.

Rowling greatly improved her skills, over the course of the years in which those books were written and published.

She was very heavy-handed and very un-subtle in the first book, but there was some wit and some potential there.

I read the first few, reluctantly at first, mostly because I did end up liking the Harry character, and some of the more imaginative plants and animals she populated that world with. I came to enjoy them for what they are. I was never into the "craze," though.

Then again, I will read just about anything from Sophocles to Steinbeck, to Cormac McCarthy, Lionel Shriver, Anita Shreve, Deaver, Douglas Adams, and Hiassen (one of my faves).

I'm a huge fan of a tightly crafted short story, too. I tend to read more literary pieces the last several years.

I think elevating your reading elevates your own writing

I also disagree that "some of the best writers in the world are practically illiterate."

That's just not true. I participate regularly in workshops--and those who do not know their tools, or are not able to effectively and accurately use those tools--really are starting out in a huge hole. This is a very competitive field.

Nope, anymore you have to sort of build your own body of work, and it MUST be as near-to-perfect as possible when you submit, for you to have ANY chance of an unsolicited piece being accepted.

In fact, you really need to be published and somewhat successful anymore to even attract an agent--and most publishing houses will NOT accept un-agented pieces.

Of course there is vanity publishing, which is DIY and PIY, and some writers even make a success of that, but...not really my cup of tea.
I stand corrected, what I should have said is successful $ earning writers, such as Chris Ryan, Andy McNab who I grant you cannot be considered as being anywhere close to someone such as Agatha Christie, Douglas Adams, Tolkien etc, or anyone of any note for that matter. However, the fact remains they are both published writers who have sold millions of books apiece. Now whilst the true nature of their meteoric blast onto the writing scene stands solely upon their experiences during the Gulf War I ('The one that got away' Chris Ryan and 'Bravo 2 zero' by Andy McNab.. My hubby would surely make a mint if I could but get him to write about his experiences in the Falklands, both Gulf Wars) it cannot be denied they have gone on to write and have published dozens of books. All of which have sold and in some cases have been made into tv dramas etc. Now if you actually take time to read their first efforts one can see for oneself the mistakes in grammer, punctuation and even spelling they both made. However, as time has progressed they have become more polished. Is this due to their expertise or because the proof reader assigned to their works has taken it upon him/herself to correct any mistake they find. I think it is the latter personally but of course you can decide otherwise.

Have I read J K Rowlings books, nope, not a one, but I can dream of becoming as successful as she has. Now whether or not she has learnt to write in a more polished fashion is open for debate, it could be she has suddenly found her command of the English language improved or it could be that she is being more closely proof read and so any mistakes are being ironed out before they are set in print. I honestly cannot say which might be the case, however what I can say is I believe more and more a great many authors have both in the past and nowadays come to rely in some shape or form on the publishing houses proof reader to get them out of any real bloopers. But again this might not be what you believe to be the case so we will have to agree to disagree.

Many moons back I was lucky enough to get a very well paid job working for the Press Association in the UK. I was a copy taker, taking copy from the reporters for submission to the editors for print in the tabloids etc in the UK. It was our duty to make sure what was written by the reporter was correctly spelt, punctuated, grammatically spot on. Granted 99% of the reporters were on the ball regards punctuation, grammar the fact remained sometimes their spelling left a great deal to be desired, in this case it was up to the copy taker to make sure it was correct or not. Not the same I hear you say, I guess this again is where we will have to agree to differ. Just as you may agree to differ on whether or not what happened within the Proof reading office set to one side of where I worked is the same as what is done in a publishing houses proof reading department. Now I cannot say I have ever seen an American newspaper, but I will assume you have columnists some of whom are not necessarily from a journalistic background. Well this is what we in the UK have, we have celebrities writing about this and that, usually to do with what they know, sometimes though it isn't. However, what ever it is they write about it is always proof read, why, because not all are brilliant in the art of putting what they think onto paper in a correctly spelt, punctuated, grammatically correct fashion as one would hope they might be. Take for instance one gentleman (who for the sake of legal expediency I will not name in an open forum) he for the most part had the most appalling handwriting, (unfortunately he insisted on submitting his work in long hand). Alas his scrawl looked akin to what an ink dipped break dancing spiders progress would look like after it had done its stuff on a blank piece of paper. It was for many undecipherable. However, one of the proof readers came to know the mans style of writing and so they read through his pieces, rewrote it minus spelling. punctuation, grammatical mistakes, he was sloppy at times in relation to all three, after which it was sent back to the author for his/her approval and only then after they signed off on it was it sent in to the papers editor for publishing.
Now whilst I wholeheartedly agree with your premise that a person unable to write a piece correctly be it in relation to spelling, punctuation, grammar is unlikely to get very far these days with regards finding a publisher who will take them on. And that it is equally as hard for someone who is unpublished to get either an Agent or as was the case years back the publishing house direct to look at his/her manuscript (I believe JK Rowling was knocked back by at least a dozen publishing houses before she found the one who would publish her work) there is hope through such competitions as this for some to make it through the minefield.

Am I good enough to get published, I doubt it. But I can but hope as does any would be author. Until that day, I am going to keep on buying my weekly lottery ticket and keep my fingers crossed that one day either I will get my manuscript taken up or my numbers will win me the mother load.

I LOVE the HP books. However, I also love LOTR but you can't compare them as even though they are both "fantasy" type books they are like chalk and cheese in content.

As for my novel I have fallen off the motivational cliff to write. I think if I had a laptop which I could sit on the sofa with and type maybe I would have carried on but not on my desktop. I may still give it ago but I may be spending a lot of late nights in front of this screen to achieve 50k! Infact I have fallen off pretty much every motivational cliff at the moment. All I can focus on is when my husband is home, and I am feeling somewhat blue at the moment!

Having a laptop can be helpful. I've NaNo'ed via laptop for two years now (last year and this one).

Even if you don't continue, Zeblar, at least you tried! That's something to be proud of, not blue about.

When I write I set myself up either in the room where my desktop sits or on my laptop, arm myself with goodies, put on a CD, usually one that has some bearing with what I am writing and off I go.
In truth I find that once I start it is as if someone else is writing, they are using my hands to type, words flow. If they don't I make a cuppa, chomp on a sarnie or biscuit, re-read what I have put down and voila, it usually starts to flow once more. If it doesnt I go do something else.

Honestly, sometimes when I re-read what I have put down I find myself wondering where it came from as I truly cannot remember writing it and so I end up having to go make myself another cuppa in order to get over the shock. lol!

Oh, here is a tip. Write using double spaces between the lines, it makes it easier to proof read later on. Also do not use too small a font size, Ariel 12-14 is ideal. (that came from a friend of mine who was in publishing, alas she worked in an academic field, not fiction as I write)

Oh yes, definitely music! I either have a CD going, or am using Pandora.com. Snacks, that depends on the time of day. On days where both my fiance and I work, I shoehorn the writing in when I can, including on my short breaks at work.
