I sure hope you do file a report against them. Maybe next time they will think twice about bullying someone for no reason. Glad the cops saw the truth.

File. It's harrassment, plain and simple.

I've called Animal Services on a skinny dog before, but I had watched it not gain any weight (in fact, get even skinnier), chained in their backyard with no shelter, for a month before I called.

File a report for trespassing and harassment. IMO if you don't they will continue with this behavior. Should something happen again you already will the 1 report on file always ask for a copy of any report you file then you will be able to keep your own file document anything that happens.

I don't know about where you're at but here there was a case where 1 neighbor filed for an order of protection against another neighbor the order of protection was granted. The neighbor it was for was a Woman.

OP...just a fyi.....some dog signs can get you into legal trouble if there is a bite. Signs like "Beware of dog" or something that gives the impression that your dog can be aggressive can be a problem....for you.

I would be worried that someone would poison my dog or tranquilize it & steal it please lock your gates our gate only opens from the inside & I love that feature. The only bad thing last year some one that was drunk tried to open it and then go over the top fell back when his buddies were trying to get him out of our yard. I was outside trying to find out why Patches was going nuts barking Buddy was out too did not bark till the guy hit the gate ? I was super glad the guy did not get the gate open but he bent it at the top.The gate has 3 latches with the drought only one works now keeping a close eye on it.

Yes, "beware of dog" can be used as "my dog is vicious and does bite" so if you're bitten you can sue the owners. Dog on premises is "there are dogs in here, they may or not be vicious, and they cannot sue. At least in our city that is how it goes. We did have beware of dog signs just as a scare tatic but replaced them after we had our quick run down of dog laws when we got our dog licenses.

We only have one gate in our entire fence that is used by the gas company to fill our propane tanks and us to get the lawn mower to the back yard. We use the garage door to get in and out. It is spring loaded so automatically shuts and latches when opened and only opens from the inside. Unfortunately I was mowing the small area of grass that hasn't been killed in the heat. I had taken a break to make dinner when this happened. It is normally kept pad locked.

I did file a report when the cops came back this morning around 730. Apparently this couple has done this before and has multiple public neuience charges. I signed a paper stating that I didn't want anything out of the file except it on record that they did indeed trespass and harass me. I didn't want them fined or jailed. I don't want this to become even more of a hassle.

I can understand this, but folk like this will not stop until they are made to stop.

Today it is you, tomorrow it may be someone else, someone who cannot stand up for themselves, someone who may just be intimidated by the woman or scared stupid by finding her loon of a husband in their backyard.

Someone has to be the one to say 'enough is enough' why can't it be you, why should someone else be made to suffer for these peoples sickness?

Post a sign specifically directed at them stating if they are seen on the property again, or try in ANY way to circumvent the fence, that they will be shot on sight armed or not, and that entry of your property or reasonable attempt to constitutes agreement to the above.

Dunno about down there but it worked for me up here. I didn't shoot my trespasser though...just put a knife through his hand and into the window sill and left him there for the cops. We aren't allowed to shoot people

I don't really think you need "proof" that somebody was trespassing in order to file a report. Really, leave the police work to the police. Even if something is hearsay, get it on record so that there is a record. I do understand that the police came, and talked to you, but if this continues, you really ought to call the police every time these people initiate contact with you, your property, and your dogs.

Coming up to your place and taking pictures is scary, and says far more to me than "My wife is crazy and thinks you're abusing your dogs". That says things to me like "casing the joint" and "seeing who is home when".

Also, if you have signs showing you have a dog on your property and they are bitten they cannot file charges against you.) We let Lou out anytime she barks at the door. Yes, the second time was because I was pissed off and better her chase him off then me shoot him.
I am pretty sure that Virginia does not have a Castle Doctrine. I would be careful thinking that you can shoot someone just for walking into your house uninvited without any penalty. Not trying to be critical - I have been learning about self protection and wanted to share what I have learned.

Castle law was passed February 9th 2012 for Virginia. Already asked at the courthouse about this when my husbands concealed carry permit was transfer to the county when we moved in June.

I'd be VERY sure I knew exactly what the law was before I started pulling weapons on people. That's escalating an annoying situation to a potentially lethal one. For example, someone sneaking around in my backyard to steal a lawnmower or something probably does NOT justify lethal force. Someone beaking into my home in the middle of the night probably does pass muster, but creeping around in the backyard?

How'd we get from "filing a report" to castle doctrine and lethal force? Maybe we are taking this a bit far?

Oh no, I wouldn't pull a gun on someone in my yard, my husband might, but I wouldn't. Now if they broke into my house and broke into my bedroom while I was alone, YUP!! Of course the cops would be there before I got to do anything fun anyway. ADT doesn't mess around. They called the cops on my husband because he forgot the code when I wasn't home and stuttered on the password.

Don't you know, people always over react and take everything much further than it should go

Several years ago when we first came to live in Spain we were told by the Guardia Civil we had to right to defend our property in any way we deemed necessary. However, they did say, if you kill someone make sure they have a weapon in their hand when we get there. They also said if our dogs bit someone entering our premises without permission then it was their tough luck.
Now the burglars/home invaders need only call the new police force tasked with upholding the law, the Mossos d'escuadra, say they were threatened by the householder with a weapon and the police will kindly arrest householder, remove them from the premises, allowing burglars/home invaders the freedom to enter the property unmolested and rob the householder blind. They also need only say a dog bit them, bear in mind this is over the phone, they do not have to show the officers any proof that your dog bit them and bang the police will shoot said dog, removing the problem of burglar/home invader getting molested by a dog defending you and yours.
I have now come to the conclusion, if anyone does enter my premises I will defend me and mine with what my husband calls 'extreme prejudice'.
Beside my door I have a baseball bat, (gift from an American friend whose son played for a team in El Paso) a machete, (extra sharp and weighted so if I swing it, it will cleave your skull trust me) and a few other assorted items that I will use on whomever thinks they have the right to enter my home without my permission.)
The anyone by the way includes the police, because if they ever dare so much as show their faces around my home intending to harm my dogs they had best have bloody good medical insurance as well as a funeral plan.

Anyone coming over my fence need not fear my dogs, they need fear me.
