| Front Yard Astronomy My husband recently submitted an article he wrote to an online astronomy magazine that deals mostly in product reviews. We just found out today that they decided to publish it! Here it is if you want to take a peek. Front Yard Astronomy - Article

| I loved the article, thanks
I find myself sleeping on a mattress in my front yard sometimes. Wondering how beautiful it would be if the surrounding cities turned out the lights for a mere 20 minutes.

| I recently moved from a somewhat touristy lighted area, and could only see the brightest/closest stars... Since moving I forgot how beautiful just staring at the stars is.
I grew up out in the country, no street lights for MILES!!! I never fully appreciated just spending the night staring at the stars. This makes me want to buy a hammock for the backyard... Heck I live in Florida I think it's a requirement right?

| Great article. I love astronomy. We lived in the country and had fairly dark skys until it became suburbia. The new neighbors used to light up their property like a jail house. Now that we moved further west and north we are again in the country with dark sky. Once the renovations are completed, will be able to get the scope out again. Told DH that I want a new computerized one. Told him he could combine all next year's holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries!

How much are they? | The one I am looking at is around $1,000.00. Its a smaller one but will be OK for me. My brother is really into it and will help me set it up. The one I have now is OK but for me is difficult to use. I need something that will just point itself. Didn't want to invest that money at the other place because it wasn't worth taking it out with the neighborhood all lit up. I'll bet there is dark sky where you are D?

| Great article. However, the last paragraph bugs me. I'm pretty sure "forgo" means to avoid or not do something. I'm think your husband meant "throw" or "have" a star paty. |

Actually, it was my first sky book. My brother got it for me after I got the telescope. I think the scope I have now was around $400.00 and it is a nice scope but for me difficult and technical to use. Need something easy to use for my "senior" brain like a point and shoot camera! Astronomy is on my list of "dream" careers (along with Veteriarian, Paleontologist, Anthropologist, and a few others I can't think of at the moment) LOL!

| Hubby just got a mount that is computerized somewhat. I'm not entirely sure I understand it completely, but he has to align it to Polaris and then it will track whatever you're looking at. It's crazy how fast we move and the stars/planets just zip out of your line of sight, so it will be nice to have. Quote: |

| This bothered me too, lol. I guess astronomers have star party's that go out to dark sky locations. He meant to forgo them and stay home in your own backyard or front yard as the case may be.

| OOH does your hubby have one of those amazing Astronomical laser pointers? I love those.
I used to be a super Astronomy nerd, and went to our local observatory often. One of my summer jaunts was to the VLA in New Mexico, where I lay underneath the radio telescopes and watched the stars and giant telescopes move!
Let's just say New Orleans is absolutely not suited for astronomical observation.

| Here's his newest article for those that are interested! I'm not into astronomy like he is, but the transit was pretty cool. Saturn is my favorite object in the sky to view and I'm sad that it will be going out of sight on us soon. Enjoy! The opportunity of a lifetime - Article
