| | Big Pup | Well, crumb! Okay, how do I put the smaller version in the gallery so I can get it to be the right size in the signature? I tried to save it and upload it again, but got an error message. It seemed so easy when I read the directions earlier.... |

| I seem to be having problems loading pictures into "member's gallery of Dobermans".
No matter which photo I try to load, what winds up being loaded is a photo of a palm tree with the letters "BMP".
It's a real pretty picture, and I wish I could take credit for it, but it's not my photo, and I've never even been to the place where it was taken.
What am I doing wrong?
I don't think I'm doing anything different now than I did when I successfuly loaded the dozens of others in my gallery.
How do I delete the "palm tree" pictures?
What does "BMP" stand for?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks. |

A BMP is the standard bit-mapped graphics format used in the Windows environment. By convention, graphics files in the BMP format end with a.BMP extension.
I checked the allowed formats and even though you can load bitmaps, they are not an allowed display format. When you click on the bmp pictures, you can still see the picture you uploaded, it just does not display the image in the preview screen. In the past, you have load pictures as a .jpg format which is allowed and works fine. jpg is preferable over .bmp anyway. Is there a reason you switched from jpg to bmp?
IF you can upload the pictures as .jpg's everything should work fine.

| That makes sense.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to even know anything was switched (from jpg to bmp) and I have no idea of how to switch back.
I'll mess around and see if I can't figure it out.
Thanks. |

| | Alpha | Chaz, if I understand your problem correctly, your photos are now being saved with a .bmp extension instead of .jpeg. Sometimes our initial settings/preferences get (inadvertently) changed. I don't know what software you're using, but with mine (Kodak EasyShare), you can (1) open the photo program; (2) Click "Tools", "Preferences" and "File Association"; (3) then mark ".jpeg" as the format in which you want all your photos saved. That is the most universally accepted format.
Of course you could convert each picture individually, but that would take a lot of time! Whatever picture software you're using should have a similar option under "Tools". Hope this helps... |

| Thanks Sooz.
What baffles me is some are being saved in jpeg, but most wind up being saved in bmp. I don't know what I'm doing different. There will be one jpeg with bmp's on either side. Same camera, same photo card, same everything, as far as I can tell.
The problem is in the "my pictures" department of my computer. When saving pictures, it only gives me one option (which isn't much of an option at all). The little drop down menu I see when saving pictures only offers the bmp option. I don't know how to get it to do otherwise. The "Windows XP For Dummies" book doesn't even mention "bmp" or "jpeg". As this is about the tenth time in a row that book has failed to address one of my problems it now sits on the floor. I'm going to get Mensa to chew it up! That way I'll get some good use out of it.
So far, the only way I can get pictures into the Gallery on here is to load them here from the "my pictures" file. So if they're in the "my pictures" file as bmp, I'm buggered.
Photos are jpeg when loaded to Photobucket, jpeg when displayed in threads on here, but when I try to save them to "my pictures" the only option it wants to give me is bmp.
Thanks to you guys for helping me identify the source of the problem, now I'm much further along towards figuring out what I'm doing! |

| I would check the settings on your camera first. On some camera, you can set a specific format to save the pictures as. Not sure what camera you have, but I would check that out. With my camera, I have it set to save the pics as jpg files. I do not use any software to get the pics from my camera to the computer. I just access the pictures on the camera when I hook it up to the pc as a separate hard drive. I copy and paste the pictures to the folder I want to place them. just a thought.

You can brighten pics or sharpen them if they're a bit fuzzy. It can do a lot more but I'm not up to speed on all the features. http://www.irfanview.com/
