| I am getting a Lake!!!!!!!
On the old maps of my area there used to be a small lake on my property, but over time with logging the water was diverted way before I came to live on this property.
You can still see where the lake was as the vegetation is different and the ground/soil is too.
So, a fellow i used to go to school with has a land clearing/logging business and has a huge big excavator that can easily dig out the lake again. The next time he has a job to do near me for the forestry, he is going to come by and see if it is feasable for him to give me back my lake!
We will use the barter system.........for his work I will raise up a beef cow for him.
This is so cool, I have wanted to do this for a long time!
I am going to stock it with trout so I can fish for my supper!!!!
It will be cool to see the wild ducks and geese using it too!
I hope this works out.

| Pearl will love having her own Lake to swim in, that pitty loves the water!
I will put a dock in while the excavavtor is here to, he can pound in the poles for me.
Then I can put my tin boat in and tie it to my very own dock!
It will be cool to paddle around and fish.
It is amazing how much wildlife likes to hang around the lakes, lots of different water birds, even turtles!

| We get a "lake" every time it rains hard. Our yard either isn't graded properly, or has settled over the years, and we have a low spot between the back door and the carport. Your lake sounds a lot better than ours. |

| How long will you have to let the lake's ecosystem get established before you put fish in? Do you need to check different fish types to see which do well in "disturbed" environment and match your fish types to your particular lake?
I'm really making this up--but I'm thinking of the process of salt-water aquarium establishing, in a relatively small controlled environment. Is lake nurturing the same?
It sounds exciting. I'm wishing we had deep enough water somewhere around that I could MAKE mine swim. Cause force is probably the only way I'd get mine in the water. LOL

| I will give it a good year to 'settle' in before I move fish from the creek nearby into the lake. I may not have to move fish to the lake, they will pobably just follow the creeks and other waterways right to my lake.
Whenever I have had a water hole dug here a natural small feeder fish shows up......a stickleback.
I will NOT introduce anything that is not already 'natural' flora and fauna in my area.
I have quite the ecosystem already in my area, many rare plants grow in the waterways.
Most of my property is at the higest point of the surrounding land, but it gradually slope down to the south side, this is where the lake used to be.
Surrounding my property is a slough, swamp and many creeks. One of the creeks was diverted at one time, but I will divert it back once the lake is back in place.

| Lucky you, I am so jealous. I really want one bad but the authorities won't let me dam or divert a stream, and not allowed to use groundwater either. I am thinking about introducing beavers but that's probably illegal too. I'm happy for you. |

| No sh*t, your very own private lake...that is so cool. Darkevs - is trout native to BC ?
Are you intending brooke/speckle - rainbow - brown trout ?
When I was a kid, we camped on my neighbors 2nd farm...that had a trout stream running through.
- just little speckle trout / man-O-man would they fry up nice on a firepit, love the crispy fins too
15 years ago, I went on business to SC...and ended up at a very nice seafood restraunt.
I ordered "cat fish" (first time) that was prepared in:
- red wine
- brown sugar
- sliced almonds
The fish plate, was to die for !!
^^ Since that trip, I have had rainbow trout prepared that SC style...IMG good.
On the farm (40 years ago), I had a distant cousin that had natural spring water, run through his property.
So he dug a hole about 14 feet deep and lined it with a metal corregated grain bin, and stocked it with rainbow.
- some rainbow would jump out of the tank after flies / and other times a snapping turtle got in, to eat free trout
Solution, was to install 2 feet of chain link wire, above ground.
- every day, he throw in a few hand fulls of pip pellets, for fish food / many trout, in the 12 to 18" length
Any time he wanted to fry up some fresh cold water rainbow trout, he just put a pellet on a hook, and would have a catch in like 15 seconds.
- then onto the wood stove, don't get much better

| How fantastic, you must keep us informed as to the progress etc and take lots of pics so we can see how it is actually done.
I know my Balsa (agricultural water tank) is nothing like a lake but I was wondering, could I stock it with Trout too (I can get Trout from a lake nearby for stocking it). It is 10 metres long, 3 metres wide and 1.5 metres deep. Of course it is made of concrete, but it is treated with the liner that is suitable for potable water to go in, (my intention was for us to swim in it during the summer). I ask this because due to the recession the concept of becoming as self sufficient as possible is becoming more and more enticing. Food is going up by 40% we have just been warned and that means I am just not going to be able to afford the luxuries like Trout or the like would be. Now my favourite fish is Sea Bass, but of course the big problem with Sea Bass is the first part of their name, so I will have to stick with freshwater fish, if that is at all possible. I have tried googling for some info but find tons regarding natural ponds being used to raise fish but not really that much really about manmade tanks (unless of course you are talking about hatcheries). I did think about digging a pond out. But there we have a problem, I live on a mountain, albeit a small one, (actually it is a big hill, but the locals refer to all the hills around here as mountains, guess its because they are not tall folk or the like). Anyhow, first I live above the natural laying point of water. No problems, rainfall might fill the pond but then it would become a haven for the damn toads (they won't be able to get into the balsa), the Kites would take fish (I can lay nets over the balsa as opposed to a pond much the same way I have with my Chicken pens etc) and last but by no means least I reckon the countryside police would probably have a knipshen because I wont have gotten permission (in other words paid them a shed load of money just so they can refuse me on the grounds it isn't natural to the area). So my Balsa is my only option. What do you think? Have any of you guys done anything like this or know anyone who has? |

| Congratulations! I hope all works out for you. One thing, you need to talk to a fish stocking company or if you have a county agent(like a farm advisor person). What I have seen of self fish stocking of ponds/lakes has been a dismal failure. They are not balanced and you end up with a few large fish and many, many small fish the large ones feed on and thats it. You cant catch anything but the small ones who never get a chance to grow to pan size. Birds will also carry in fish eggs on their feet and legs. I am not coming up till a year or two after you stock it right. |

| This is still in the ..........I wanna Lake, but have to wait thingy, but I am praying it all works out!
I will try and get an aerial photo before any work begins, as I do have a friend with a helicopter that might do it for me if I ask nicely.
Nt sure how big we will be able to make it, I want to try and get it to the size it once was. And we will have to do it in the driest part of the year so it does not fill in too fast with water, otherwise we will just have a big mud bath.
I am going to contact one of my puppy owners who lives a ways out of my area as he makes lakes on peoples property for a living! I would have gotten him to do it but the cost to bring his equiptment here would not have been feasable for me. But he is familiar with my property and he knows what it takes to 'build' a Lake.
LindaH, I think I am going to just wait and see if the trout will just move in on their own as there are lots of Brook, and Rainbow trout in the creeks already.

| Toby'shuman, google fish farming on land and see what you can find out.
It is getting to be a popular thing to farm. Tilapia fish farming is huge!
They even raise shrimp in huge tanks on land.
