By the way, how deep it the canal between the pond and lake?
In the summer do you get much evaporation? Here due to the temperatures I have to shade any body of water or I will lose a good few inches a day and end up with nothing by the end of the summer.
I know you have lots of trees surrounding, so perhaps direct sunlight won't be so bad an issue, but heat evaporation?
You said you were considering a solar pump to circulate the water. I have one and to be honest unless you get the type with a back up battery they are pretty useless. The moment a cloud comes across or you get a not so brilliant day the damn thing stops working.
There is a fantastic solar pump for lakes on the market but you are talking 2000 to 4000 euros (depending on size of water you wish to pump around) which at todays rate of 2,709 Canadian Dollars to 5,418 Canadian Dollars is pretty steep (well it is in my opinion). It does come with a battery back up so for those dull days you still have the option of oxygenating the water etc. (I believe you can also top them up from a generator but you'd have to check on this).
I am personally looking into 2 pumps that will shift around 30,000 litres of water an hour which I intend to run off of car batterys (solar batterys are astronomically expensive here) which will be trickle charged by a couple of panels. (This is for my balsa or water storage tank). But even this way is expensive.
I have found E-bay a great place to source out the things I need.
You know, I am excited for you, it kind of makes me want to do something like this, but living on top of a mountain I think it is but a pipe dream. However, we can but dream as they say.

| I thought the solar power pump was for something like a nice bubbly bird bath in the yard if the pond/lake fell through. I didn't think she intended to pump the pond and/or lake water, but maybe I'm wrong.
Perhaps Darkevs will tell us when she gets thru paying for her lake. Just assuming that's what she's doing since her absence coincided with the finishing of the lake. Ooor maybe she's fishing... |

| it took me over an hour last night just to get that last photo posted here.
i am going to have to get the satellite internet guy out here and move the dish around and try to get a better connection.
the huge fir trees on the land just off my property have grown higher over the last 10 years and we think they are now disrupting the connection.
anywho...... the ..we shall refer to it as a BIG pond as we had to stop digging it bigger the land was just getting to soft and mucky.
from Pearls little pond to the end of the big pond is over 350+ feet long!
the canal is about 200 feet long, 12 to 14 feet wide and about 10 feet deep.......
the main body of the HUGE pond is about...150+ feet long, 80 feet wide and about 14 feet deep.
also........he diverted all the water running down the property from an underground spring...................to the beginning of the canal just off Pearl's pond............. and since there is a drop of land there ...........we have a small waterfall which i will improve on so the water falls.,,,,,,,,,,'better'.
and since he had about 4 hours to 'kill', , he cleared about 3 acres of land above the canal area..............it will be like a park in a few years.
i just have to wait for the ground to set up a bit then i will wander around spreading pasture mix and wildflower blends.
lots of pictures to come if my internet service co-operates.
they have sent men to the moon.
but i cannot get good internet service 5 miles off the paved road.
well, without paying an arm and a leg for it anyway.
Good Morning DT!!!!

| I hear ya about the internet thing... we have a huge air force base with research and testing facilities and flight training nearby, so obviously there is intensely state-of-the-art internet, satellite stuff... yet we are considered to be "remote", so our connection is unreliable, much slower than we were used to, cranky. And, for our trouble, we don't even get to have a waterfall... I am SO jealous!!! Just keep an eye out for stray crocodiles.

| Toby'shuman.we do not get long spells of hot weather here so evaporation is not an issue.
but during the drier summer weather runoff will lower the water table 3 to 4 feet at the most and only for a couple of months.
yes the solar pumps and fountains are just for show.
i am only wanting a fountain not an aeration device at this time.
some cool floating solar lights too.
but check out this link...........i really like their pond aeration system, though not sure what it costs......... Pond Aeration - Diffused Air Systems by Lake Fountains

| Waterfall huh! Oh my, I am conjuring up a fantastic addition to your off grid system now you said that. I just wish I had running water somewhere on my land.
We had a guy come up onto our place with the intention of seeing if there was any water under our land. Well there was I expecting some high tech gizmo's being brought out and what did he have?
Two pieces of coat hanger (right angled bit of metal) in a couple of cut off straws.
Erm, not high tech at all and seeing as he was expecting me to pay nigh on 135 Canadian Dollars for him to wander around with the so called divining rods swinging I told him thanks but no thanks. I needed to know where the water course ran, not where the rain sits which is what his little coat hangers pointed out. |

I have my own little coat hanger diviner.
years ago on another homesteaded piece of property we had the witcher in...........he was awesome!
told us where the best water source was, about how deep we needed to go to hit it and........how much water an hour we would get.
He was correct.

| IDK about your guy, Toby'shuman, but sometimes water witching really does locate groundwater, and can be uncannily accurate.

| Wow - what an adventure! I wish I could trade one beef cow for a lake! Around here that cow would have to be worth about $20,000. Well, we have a huge creek that is 10-12 feet deep in places. That's one reason we bought here but I've always wanted a lake. Lucky lucky you! Can you see it from your house? |
