The Artist & The Dog (pic heavy)

Title credit goes to Darkevs

A lot of you probably don't know that I absolutely love photography and graphic design. I took two full years of classes for both and I hope sometime I will be able to turn my hobby into a career.

All the black and white photos (and blue) are from a film camera. All the pictures were hand developed by me in a dark room. I feel so at home in a dark room and I'd love to get back to it but sadly today's world is moving past film photography so I am working on getting good working with a digital camera.

The second half of this thread will be all my graphic design art. Well not all but my favorites

I apologize that I had to take pictures of my work. I don't own a scanner and my usb with all my graphic design projects on it is in NC I believe so I apologize for the poor quality. It really doesn't do the pictures justice.

I hope everyone enjoys and prepare yourself for a picture overload!

The little boy in this picture is my brother. I believe he was 2 or 3 in this picture.

My rescue cat Abby. I found her in a box with her litter mates on the side of the road. She couldn't have been more then 6 weeks when I found her. I kept her the others found great homes.

I learned how to dye my pictures funky colors My brother again.

I won an award for this picture.

This was taken using a circle oatmeal box lined with black electrical tape and a pin hole cover with black tape as the lens.

This is only a very small portion of my pictures. I will keep adding to it throughout the next couple months.

Now it's time for the graphic design portion...

Some of my collection of graphic design work I have done.

We had to create a magazine from the year we were born. I was born in 1990.

Cover

page 1 & 2

page 3 & 4

page 5 & 6

back

Calendar I made

I made my own notepad (I have so many pads of this haha) The bottom picture is Marilyn Monroe all hand drawn by me on the computer.

Another project was to make a booklet for a cd here is mine...

Front

page 1 & 2

page 3 & 4

page 5 & 6

back

This was all hand made using photoshop

An ad I made

This was by far my favorite project to create. We were asked to make a book based on one thing and use pictures and words to describe the word. Mine was called Childhood Is... (all the kids in the pictures are my brother and two sisters)

Childhood is...

Laughter

Creativity

Friendship

Discovery

Magic

Silly

WOW................you used to develope your own photos!!! How cool is that.

Very nice work you do. I look forward to seeing more!

so sad things are so.................instant now.

I have a whack of old negatives of my dogs that would be cool to get developed, some even of my first Dobe Sadie when she was just a wee pup! I might have to dig them out and see if anyone locally still developes photos.

KW - I am impressed with all your works of art...the Lion King hand drawing was really nice to.

I particularly enjoyed reading the article you wrote with the nice complements given, to your special GF.
I can easily see, even back then at the young age of 17 y/o, you had a good head on your shoulders.
- obviously, no doubt great values shared by your parents...growing up, along the way / they moulded you extremely well with their influence

It is always nice to see the passions of others...clearly, your heart is in your great work....b/c it truly shows.
- my love is autobody sheetmetal...fabrication, welding, refinishing, painting...as a self taught hobby...older GMC trucks & mid '60's muscle car collector
I don't regreat putting myself through College plus 4 years of night school at the University level / BUT, my career choice should of followed my LOVE...then 30 years of employment, would have not felt like work...and I should of open my own shop, many years ago...self employment & own boss.
- sure beats working for often lazy manager dummies, over the decades...lol
- with their self serving interests, and lack of appreciation and $$ / for those making them look good

Thank you. Unfortunately the girl in that paper and I aren't friends anymore which sucks but it's ok we all change and realize the true colors of everyone.

I agree. I'd love to do what I love it's the getting there part that stinks.

Thank you for all the great comments.

KW - I parted ways with a decade old dear friend, several years ago.
Looking back, it was a true blessing, can't hang on...when some things don't go right and some people change.
If we still hang on to the few that makes us laugh, but their true colors (once discovered) give us reason for concern...we are not being true to ourselves. Dumping them, opens up the possibility...that a real friend(s), is in our future...however long it takes, does not really matter much.

I know the "getting there in business, sucks", if it was so easy, everyone would like the job they find themselves in.
- this thread, while may be considered a "baby step" towards the end / its the exposure & putting one step forward (more times than not)...that will ultimately allow you to realize your dreams / and this is in my best thoughts and sincere wishes, for you
(and Diesels will help his Mom, stay home and maybe freelance her gifted talents...him and I like this idea, very much...He-He)

I somehow managed to leave out the dog portion of this haha so here they are plus some of my digital photography work (be nice im new to the digital world even though i've been working on it for like 5 years haha) My problem is my beginning pictures were all with my dads rebel camera and it took amazing pictures! Then I moved out of my house and just had to get a basic standard digital camera so it's harder for me to really capture a good picture but I tried.

This is my first dog Kody. He will be 10 in April and he is the love of my life besides Diesels. He lives with my parents in NC and I miss him more then anything. He was my 12th birthday present. Best birthday by far! I think he was 8 weeks in this picture maybe 9. [taken with a digital camera] this is a picture of a picture.

This was taken with my film camera so it was hand developed. Picture of a picture sadly.

[digital camera]

My sweet boy. You can really see his grey face here. [crappy digital camera]

You'd never know he was 10 by how he acts [crappy digital camera]

This is Skyler my red husky. He has by far been the hardest dog I've ever had. He was a rescue and boy oh boy this dog had a mind of his own but had a big heart. He was the prettiest dog I have ever seen with his big blue eyes but he's in a better place now <3 [crappy digital camera]

I was messing around with fun editing stuff haha [crappy camera]

The girl that Beaumont mentioned earlier we both had part of this necklace. They came together but we broke them apart. Now that necklace stays in a draw a long with a lot of other things that I won't bring out from that friendship :/ [digital camera]

A friend and I messing around with chalk long time ago. [Digital camera]

One of my sisters she was probably 1 or 2 in this picture. She's mini me. She's 6 now [Digital camera]

Sister again [digital camera]

My brother. He's 8 now. I think he was probably 5 in this picture. [digital camera]

Brother again [digital camera]

[digital camera]

[crappy digital camera]

It was a blessing in disguise. Her and I are at such different points in our lives now. We are friends on facebook which is the only reason I know and after our falling out which was all because she lied to me and really hurt me with some things it's all worked out for the best.

I wish I could freelance. How much fun would that be and I'd get to stay home with my boy?! That would be a dream come true. Right now though it's not possible I need to work a lot to support me and the dober kid and eventually get back to school which is my goal but hopefully one day I can go ahead with my art and really take it something but for now it will just be for fun.

Beaumont asked me a great question: What is so magical about a dark room?

For those of you who have never hand developed your own film it might not make sense to you and for those of you who have maybe you'll share my love for a dark room.

Now a days everything is digital and your pictures just appear on a screen and you pick the one you like and edit it how you want. Film is not the same. Film you have to develop which a series of chemicals and then you have to let them dry and finally when you bring it out of the dark room you see your final creation. There's different machines used to almost project the negative onto the paper and the best part is once you project the negative onto the photo paper you still can't see it! It's still a mystery. You have to dip the paper in three different chemicals to make it appear and unlike a computer where you can adjust the contrast and saturation and all that, creating a photo with chemicals is all about timing. How long you keep a picture in each chemical determines how that photo will come out.

When I was developing film I was in somewhat of a dark place and my photography was my outlet. I was in my own little world in a dark room. I'd have my headphones in and all my negatives from the day in my hand and it was up to ME to decide how they would come out. It seemed like the only thing in my life I had control over was my photos.

There's something so peaceful and calming about standing in a dark room with a single red light as your only source of seeing and making something come alive. It was quiet in there and it was a place you could be yourself, with no judgement and it was a place where I felt alive.

Even when a picture didn't turn out right there was something beautiful about it. It was the feeling that even though it was too dark or out of focus or whatever it was that made the photo not work, I knew I made that picture come alive. I chose how that photo was made and it was something I could claim as mine.

Digital photography is definitely different. Similar but different. Digital photography is more about editing, you can make almost any picture beautiful but film if it isn't right you start from the beginning. I will always love film and will always love developing my own photos but now a days developing your own film is becoming less and less common but it will always be where I started and it will always be what made me fall in love with photography and made me want to make it a career.

My heart will always lie in the dark room with my photos. That was the beginning of everything for me.

KW - Thanks for the dark room trip and taking the time to share ...I can just see Diesel helping his Mom in there / little bugg*r will be absolutely quiet, for a moment too long...and before you know it, he has flicked on the light switch...or found a way to open up the one and only door...He-He...play time.

I clearly understand the wash cycles in chemicals & critical timing / having a background in the field of metallurgy (the science of metals...starting career) - much like dipping metal samples in acid etch, to expose the structure for microscope analysis (that was inons ago).

My one question is...if a great negative was not developed in the very best timing cycle and chemical dark room dipping....is the negative shot (?) / or can you redo your work, if the potential photo was in good focus and worthy of another go.
(in the metal lab industry, one would simply re-micro polish the metal or alloy specimen to remove the improper acid etch (under or over exposed) and just redo a second time / and with practice...rework jobs are a thing of the past...but were not enhancing or changing the true structure)

Luckily there's two doors too get into a dark too,. You open one, close it then open the next and lose it that way you ensure no light is on but knowing Diesel he'd figure a way out haha I can see him spilling the chemicals all over the place since he has learnd recently how to counter surf haha

To answer your question you can use the same negative as much as you want. That never gets touched by chemicals or anything. It is simply there so the light can go through it and basically "burns" the image onto the photo paper to be processed The photo paper is what goes in the chemicals. I have all my negatives some pictures I've made over and over again and others Ive never put on paper only way you wouldn't be able to reuse a negative would be if the negative somehow got messed with or ripped but I keep mine in protective coverings so that doesn't happen.

Did you do color, or just B/W? I've never done my own developing, but I know color is trickier to do yourself than B/W. I've mentioned photgrapher Keith Carter in another thread. He still shoots medium format B/W film, and does all his own processing. I know a few people who still use film. They mostly shoot medium format, though, not 35mm.
