| Marmite shortages? Hey, DiscoWhore, I just heard on the news that New Zealand is facing a Marmite shortage. Never having had any, I have no idea about its culinary appeal, but I am curious if you are a consumer, and has the possible shortage affected you yet? |

| I doubt there's anything comparable in the US. ...it's a salty tasting yeast extract paste, that my OS friends claim is an "aquired taste". Aussie and Kiwi kids are brought up on the stuff like mother's milk.
..you spread it thinly on toast or bread. ...also great as a roast chicken rub

Have had friends send it over to the US for people to try, and they said the only thing it's good for is tarring up roads or drive ways haha... It really is an acquired taste...

| It's actually delicious! ...the trick is to spread it thinly until you get used to the taste. (and I mean smear it really really really thinly!)
ETA: also use lots of butter first to begin with! ...and smear it over the butter.
you might be able to source some vegemite (which is really similar) over there in Koala blue shops or other aussie stores....
here ya go! ..... Australian Food USA, VEGEMITE, Tim Tams, Violet Crumbles, Cherry Ripes, Shapes, Aussie Food Online
looks like they have Cherry ripes, violet crumble and Tim Tams too!

LOL seems so weird people would want to go and buy Napi-san, like there isn't an equivalent product there already?
OMG Tim Tams though... my fav winter treat with hot chocolate *drool*

OMG Tim Tams though... my fav winter treat with hot chocolate *drool* | The irony is that mum brings Tide spot sticks back to Australia with her when she visits the US
...but napisan does work a treat...
hey, do we teach them how to bite off the corners of tim tams and suck liquer coffees through them?
oh and be tempted to try the violet crumble people....you won't be dissapointed!
*mmm hot chocolate...I miss the choc milk I could get by the bottle in Christchurch....that was soooooo yummy! ....and Granny's choc fudge ripple ice cream too.

| oh this is worth trying too! They are delicious! (you can eat the flowers after you've drunk the champagne) ...and the price seems pretty reasonable as we pay $10 -$11 a jar for them here. Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup - Simply Australian
(Their prices for meat pies and sausage rolls seems a bit OTT though! )
glad to see some Tassie Honey there too! ...and yes, it's completely pure honey!

| I don't think I'm that adventurous, so I'll probably pass. I've had Jelly Babies before, though. They were interesting. |

Like cold medicine-they have this stuff called Nite Nurse that's similiar, but far superior to Nyquil. And this nasal spray that gets rid of colds, we always grab 3 or 4 bottles of that to bring home with us, too. |

We do have good foods too though!
Fresh Manuka honey is yummmyy
Whittaker's chocolate (especially the kiwifruit one!)
Pineapple lumps
L&P
Lolly Cake
Hokey Pokey ice cream
Fish & Chips (Is British really, but we do it best )
The one thing I can't get enough of, which is really hard to find here, is Cherry Coke and Cherry Dr Pepper... and of course graham crackers, but I always get them at Xmas thanks to certain little Doberelves hehehe.
Used to spend sooo much time on DT chat talking about food, if I visit America I am going to spend so much time eating LOL.

| oooh yes! to L&P and manuka honey!!! yum!
P.S. Manuka honey is one of the best natural wound healers out there! Both NZ and Aust honey have to be 100% pure to be labeled honey, so it's a healthy choice.
I have a local importer to supply my cherry coke and Dr Pepper needs ...costs a small fortune though

There was one pop I really liked that was only here briefly, called Cheerwine. It's more common in the east. I liked it, but evidently not enough other people did, so the one store that carried it quit selling it. Sigh. |
