Pit Bull Put Down on the News

Today I was watching my local news, only too see a story about how a judge had ruled that an owner had to put down his pit bull for attacking and killing a chihuahua. It was alleged that the pit bull was "charging" a five year old and the brave little dog stepped in and paid the ultimate price. As more info was given, I found out that the owner had compiled video of his lovely little pit bull playing with children and being a loving dog in general, but the judge did not even allow him to testify in court.

It is hard seeing that this case was so one-sided that the owner was not even allowed to speak in court! I also think it hits home because of how we as doberman owners understand firsthand the stigma that is automatically placed on these specific dog breeds. Sure, it is awful that the pit killed the other dog, but research shows that pit bulls may be aggressive to other dogs, but not normally humans. Human aggression is usually based on mistreatment and/or abuse. I will say that this story has no happy ending either way, but I think that fairness should have been enforced.

Just felt like sharing this eye-opening experience. It is sad world we live in these days.

There have been 6 bad dog attacks on children this year in New Zealand (big deal for a country of 4 million), so dogs are in the lime light again Things are not looking good for dogs in NZ. The father of a girl mauled horribly by 2 pitbulls about 5 years ago is calling for all dogs to be muzzled all the time. It's insane. I did see an statement somewhere saying the government knows the problem is not because of a certain breed/type, thumbs up to them for that!

I'm so sick of bully breeds ending up in the hands of irresponsible owners. Once again, the dog pays the ultimate price, this time 2 dogs lost their lives. Root of the problem is always stupid owners.

Why was the owner not allowed to speak his case in court? That irks me. It also irks me when people don't take care of their own dogs.

We had a case here yesterday where a woman shot her boyfriend's dog (listed as a pitt-Doberman mix by one source, and a Dogue de Bordeaux by this source, but who knows, there's a huge difference between those dogs), after the dog attacked the boyfriend. This was a dog with known human aggression and a bite history, which the owners didn't report or handle properly. Naturally, the breeds are going to be blamed, instead of the owners, who were perfectly aware that their dog was a resource guarder and had already bitten a person.

I knew a pit bull that jumped from a second story porch to get to her little human which was about 6 years old that was getting rag dolled from her back back by another dog. The pit bull broke her back legs from the jump and and still made it to her little human and fended off the other dog and the police still ordered for the pit bull to be put to sleep.

Pit bulls are not allowed in some of the dog parks here in seattle so sometimes I see a lot of them in the dog park I go to and there will be 4-6 pit bulls at a time and they wont be the ones causing any problems, its the little ones going around yapping in the big dogs faces and trying to hump all of them (shakes head)

News like this just makes me sad. Most of the breeds I really like have this stereotype and its pathetic.

the little girl pit in our dogpark was voted Most Likely to Roll Over on Your Shoes. Total doll. Owned by a doll, not a loser in need of extra macho-ness. Bad dog owners tick me off.

As usual they attack the symptom and not the problem.......piss poor pet owners are the problem. They come in all walks of life from the macho chest thumper to the owner of the dog de jour who flaunts the latest in canine accessories. You have to include the impulse buyer, the misguided "I saved this puppy from the pet store" owner to the just plain stupid and ignorant. They ALL contribute to the making of the problem. Add to that the refusal to control their dogs and you have......ta da......bsl and dogs pts simply because they were owned by the rude and ignorant of the world.

In their house, with their daughter and their little dog, which was ALSO where the pit bull was... this happened in their living room, and right in front of at least the mother. It was unclear to me how it was that the pit bull got into their house... I think he lived next door.

Yes the owners of the chi were home with the little girl, and the pit owner was gone when the event happened.

Yesterday I was at a dog show, in the event hall there must have been in excess of a hundred American Stamford Terriers, at least 50 Staffordshire Bull Terriers, around 50 English Bull Terriers, 6 American Bully Terriers (never heard of them before but fell in love with the great big lumps immediately) 20 plus German Shephards 5 Alano's, 6 Dogo de Argentina, 10 Chows, 20 odd Malamuts, 15 or so Husky's and 8 Akita's and around 200 different breeds from Chihuahua's to Spanials to Yorkshire Terriers to Afghans.

There was not one single fight, one bit child, (and trust me there were dozens running around) or one single problem.

Now I would love to hear from these people who think just because a dog is from a certain breed that they are automatically dangerous.

I am sorry the Chihuahua died, it must have been horrific both in its suffering and for the owners to see.

What I don't understand is why the owner wasn't given the right to speak. I always thought in the US that you were innocent until proven guilty and that you all have the right to have your say and your day in court. Must have gotten it wrong.

This has me in tears. I was raised with a rescue SBT. Not legal rescue since my grandmother stole him from a piece of sh*ts back yard. He was my heart dog. Amazing with my sisters and I. When we slept he laid across the doorway To protect us. Never once EVER did he ever raise a lip to anyone in our family. Amazing dog. Now, if you weren't family forget it...
