Still alive

Have been a bit overwhelmed by life the last 5 months after my ex announced he "no longer cared to be married" which translates to, "I'm involved with another woman."Breaking down 25 years on a large property plus renovations on my 1929 "new" house has been a huge physical stress but...I made it!

Love love my new house, which is 2 blocks from Duke University east campus on a short dead end street. The historic neighborhood has appreciated 600% in the 27 years I've owned the house and tenants have paid off the mortgage!

Of course, my fence for the dogs came first and it is so amazing- creates a totally private space and I'm shaping the garden with plants from the extensive gardens at the old one.

Here are some photos. Check out the huge training space I have when I slide back the furniture- purposely designed things that way.

triciakoontz - Beautiful decor there & a lovely place / you have a designers eye, for good taste & thoughtfulness.
- your house has the "home & welcoming" feeling, and that is rare in many sterile places today
- rarely does balance & flow evolve / the eye searches for the present elements
It all looks, very well executed / congrats on your place !!

We bought our first house in 1982, only the crappiest property on the street, we could afford.
It to had location to die for & also on a short dead end street / raised 2 dobes & one son there.
- over the years the house was gutted of old floors, plumbing & wiring
- added high end fixtures & oak trim throughout
- plaster walls was stripped of painted wall paper and restored / and meticulously painted
- few decades later we added a custom 3 car detached garage / I hammered half the nails...hehe
- finally built an amazing sun room that added another 50% sq. footage, to main floor
It sold for 8x the original purchase price / but 400% of that gain, was in added structures expences.
- when it comes to selling, one has to appraise their own place & find the best agent / someone rare these days

Our son bought his first house last year, and its already up 50% in 8 short months time.
- he did buy in a 8 year old subdivision, that has perfect location
The Toronto market is heating up / so people are selling their properties and moving to cheaper cities an hour
or two away - its always Location / Location / Location, in real estate...and biding wars , starting to become the norm.

Sorry to hear it but that house looks simply stunning and I think is a reflection of the happiness you have come to find, so many beautiful bright colors and tasteful decorating. It looks like a garden cottage and I'm sure you'll only continue to make it more and more beautiful as you get your gardens growing.

p.s. that front porch is just screaming to be sat on in a comfy lounger with a good book on a warm breezy summer day!

Sorry about the divorce; I’ve been through that too (after 36 years of marriage) and it is tough.

I’m happy to see that you are well along to making a new life for yourself--your house is lovely. I like the bold front door color; and the blue iris just adds to the effect.

I wish you could come over to my house and give it a make-over!

Thank you. Yes, it is screaming! It's the last "room" to set up - I'm in the process of sanding and repainting an amazing huge glider that has been in my shed at the old house for decades. Its wide and long, can easily accommodate a soundly sleeping adult or 5 wiggly children. Lemonade, a sweet breeze, a good book, a pillow, a gentle back and forth...ahhhhhh. A nap!

Tricia,

Congratulations! Lovely home!

I hope Karma comes back to bite the "lovebirds" in the A$$, in your lifetime! You know, so you can get some vindication.

I can't fully dis men, as I still like them. However, there are some cads and skanks out there! I, too, have been through something similar.

Move on girl! A better man awaits you!

Stay strong!

Had a great laugh on this one! Actually, karma has already arranged for some vindication - his apartment building caught on fire about a month after he had moved out and he's had to go live with a "friend" who's annoying donkey-laugh drives him crazy while it is being reconstructed.

The other other part of this sea of change is that now I'm through all the months of killer 18 hour work days, I actually feel like I have this glorious new life. I'm sleeping like a baby which I haven't done in 2 1/2 decades and I just wake up so happy every day. Sometimes it takes a bombshell to make you realize that your life wasn't headed in a good direction in the first place. Nobody else to take care of means that I can do lots and lots more stuff with my dogs and human friends; I'm teaching five classes, dating, planning travel, etc! So, Life tends to bring us exactly what we need and, in this case, I needed a big change, obviously. I feel sorry for who ever inherits my ex's mess.

What I didn't deserve was doing ALL the work with not one iota of help and having my liquid finances wiped out when he abandoned ship. But, I now own my own beautiful place totally unencumbered, and I'm quite sure Karma will take care of retribution for the shady sneaky stuff. And, oooooooh, do I love karma? Oh, YEAH!

And as for that better man, he's welcome to visit but I'm not ever adding any permanent resident to my home/life. I had forgotten how much I truly love living alone. I'm finding there are men out there who feel the same way. "Long term boyfriend" sounds waaaay more appealing and so much less messy than "husband". ;-)

Glad you are doing well in your new home. Our first house was a 1923 Florida bungalow in St. Petersburg - the layout looks identical to yours. When we sold it 5 years later to take a company transfer to the Philadelphia area, we sold it to one of my sisters..... she still lives in it 20 years later. I loved that house!

I showed the picture of Boon to my daughters, One was very confused because she thought it was Harvard ;-)

I showed the picture of Boon to my daughters, One was very confused because she thought it was Harvard ;-)
He looks so much like Harvard with that gorgeous head and absolutely perfect square body. He has insane strength and musculature but is also very refined. Everybody calls him the elegant powerhouse.

He had some crummy endocrine numbers again last month, back at NC State vet school to try and solve the mystery once and for all. Finally, they now have an internal medicine faculty member who is a specialist in endocrine disorders. Boon has a file that's about 4 inches thick and I think the intrigue of his complex case caused her to take us on without waiting the usual four months, for which I'm very glad. He feels pretty terrible when his numbers are so wacky.

Just seeing this post...really sorry to hear about having to go through the personal stuff. Even when it's "for the best" it can still feel really crummy.

I have to say, though, I LOVE the house - it's beautiful. Love the decor, love the fence, everything is coming together beautifully. Of course the dogs have adjusted with no trouble...no surprise there.

I hope things continue to go well for you.

That's why there's more than one of us!

(I'm just digging out from coat season! Plus, training two dogs, managing my regular job...it's exhausting!)

I missed this post, too. I want to say I think you are amazing - in your attitude and strength and beautiful taste in decor.
I want to show this post to my daughter who has a small place of her own and has worked so hard at it. I told her I wished she had a husband to help share the load, and she told me, Mom, I am very content with my life right now and don't want it to change.
I admire that in a person and I am not so sure I would be like that.
BTW, she too bought this little house in a run down neighborhood on a TND (TeacherNextDoor) hud program for $45K. It just appraised last week for $220K.
Hard work pays off.
Anyway, your story was uplifting to me, even though I too was wanting Karma to do its work on the opposing party.
