| The guy recommended either a S&W 686, model number 26252 on the site I posted a link to. Or a Ruger GP100, model 70258 on their web site.
I really think the semi-Automatics "Look" more comfortable, of course looks can be deceiving. I will for sure try both. Quote:
a revolver is a pistol... I think you mean revolver versus semiauto - both are handguns aka pistols.
The logic behind the revolver for beginners is mechanical simplicity. Fro example, my wife has a hard time pulling the slide back on our semiautos. However - be advise, the revolvers can have a very stiff trigger and can be very kicky. It's a tradeoff. The semiautos are less kicky becasue the spring in teh slide helps absorb some of the energy. In a revolver, you would be limited to 38 special, unless you want to venture into the 357 magnum territory (very kicky and not recommended for what you want). In the semiautos, try both a 9mm and 45ACP.
| I had it all wrong, "again". I did think that all pistols were the SA. lol. See how much you guys are teaching me. I wish I could just run out and buy one tomorrw. "sigh" but I know I need to study and learn and try out a some first. |

I am surprised he is pushing you that way - I mean if you want a bone jarring fist full of fury, go 357 Magnum, but hang on!!
My opinion - if you go revolver, go 38 special. Get one made to handle 38 special +P. With the right self defense ammo in it -plenty of stopping power.
And to make many of us happy, you have to try a 1911 45ACP semiauto. I am dying to know what you think after shooing one

| See that's the thing. I can't try stuff out unless they have a used one at the range and they have limited pistols/revolvers. I can meet him at my friends house that knows him and look at his but but I don't know what he owns. Or I can meet him where he works at the range and he will help me try out a few of the used ones and show me some new ones.
You know I really had decided on a shotgun before talking to him and really I am leaning in that direction still. I know I asked for his advice and I really still do want it, but I think I want a big bad ass shot gun with a shorter barrell. The way we live, like hermits, I can leave it on the kitchen table for a year and no one will ever touch it if I don't. It is just me and my husband and company is RARE, unless it is my Mom to let my Dobie out. Plus you guys sound just as knowledgeable as him and most of you say even though it may not be your favorite, a shot gun is probably best for what I need.
Maybe I will get there and some revolver/pistol/ or SA will just really strike my fancy, you never know. I will reserve judgement till I can go and see some.
I'm getting ready to call someone else now. A friend of mine told me her husband has a hidden, locked, room (the door is hidden by a wall), full of her husbands guns. I think I need to talk to him. Calling now....... |

But, the 12ga will make a big bang which is especially painful indoors (you won't always have your ear protection handy in an emergency situation).
I like this for home defense: Mossberg Model 500 HS 410 Home Security 2 1/2 in -3 in Shotgun 50359, 410 Gauge, 18", 3" Chmbr, Blue
The 410 gauge is smallest guage, but then, it is enough to do the job.

| | Alpha | Well IMHO the best thing for someone to have for home defense situations that is not very familiar with guns IS a shotgun.... especially just for home defense..
Now I'm not talking about a 28 inch barrel with choke tubes etc.... but most manufacturers make a home defense weapon with a much shorter barrell that is not nearly as bulky as the average long-gun... Sorry if I have repeated anything else that was said, but the thread is VERY long, and I'm a little lazy tonight.. |
