This site is awesome and you all are awesome. Where else can you get Doberman and Gun advice.

Thanks so much. I can't visit the range till next weekend. I have obligations all this weekend. I'm getting excited now.
yea...is a great site...please be safe (expect a pistol grip 12ga. to kick like a SOB...may want to try smaller caliber first....or one with a regular stock)....have fun wen u get to it....u proably know this stuff but.....
1. all guns are ALWAYS treated like they are loaded and ready to fire...ALWAYS
2. pistol-learn to take out the clip and open the chamber...lock the chamber open (with safety on) inspect it for NO BULLETS... show the other person...then hand a weapon to them when they are ready...they should inspect with you while in your hands...then again when they take it....BARREL ALWAYS IN A SAFE DIRECTION...thinking of not just whats in the room but whats behind walls, etc.
3.same w/shotgun....empty the choke...empty the chamber...w/safety on....
4. u'll learn and do fine....a unloaded weapon (no clips, no shells)...visually inspectable and inspected by all parties (open chamber, open locked slide)...safety on always untill ur ready to fire....
5. IF AT ANY TIME THE GUN IS POINTED AT ANYTHING....EVER...ANYTIME...YOU BETTER BE O.K. WITH KILLING IT!!!!
-I know u know this (and will learn some)....just had to say it.

yeah, I got one of those mossberg's in 12 gauge a long time ago at a Wal Mart for like $150. I bought the short barrel and pistol grip kit for it later at a gun show. It's a pretty 'raw' shotgun in that you get all the kick - nothing absorbs it - like a fist full of fire It holds, what, five shells, so you get to make that neat sliding racking sound to load the round. Fun to shoot.

I just realized, looking at leroy's shotgun, mine is a mossberg 500, I just don't have the tactical stuff on it. But its neat because you can change barrels - I have a long and short barrel for it. And I have the pistol grip kit on it. But looking at leroy's, next gun show I might have to do some more modifying

got this from wikipedia about the mossberg 500 models:
Mossberg 500 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Home Security model

The model 500 HS410, or "Home Security" model, is only available in .410, and is specifically designed for defensive use. It comes with a youth sized stock, a vertical foregrip with, in some versions, a built in laser sight, and a special muzzle brake and spreader choke on an 18.5 inch (47 cm) bead sight barrel. The .410, while by far the least powerful common shotgun chambering, still generates energy in excess of a .357 Magnum, and the spreader choke produces wider patterns, as well as less chance of wall penetration, in the short ranges to be expected in a defensive situation. This model is targeted at the novice user, who needs a simple, easy to use yet effective defensive weapon, and is packaged with an introductory video covering use and safety.[1]

hmmm - might have to get me one of these

Wow...just checking in again and everyone has added a lot of great information.

My rundown on our specific guns:
We had a Glock 22 .40 cal, but sold it because we both HATED that gun. Glocks have the reputation for being extremely durable. You could drag them behind your truck, kick them around in the mud, wipe them off and they will still fire. But we both hated it. Neither one of us like .40's because they are damn uncomfortable to shoot compared to our other calibers. We hate the super-poppy kick that they have. So the glock has a new home.

I had a Sig Sauer P232 which is a .380. Really really nice little firearm for a woman for conceal carry. Small, lightweight, extremely well made, attractive....but I sold it too because as it turns out I like loud bangs. It's .45 for me all the way. Here is a link to the P232: Show Product Details

My conceal carry that I use is a Kimber Ultra Carry II. It's a 1911 which is my all time favorite and I'll probably own nothing but 1911's ever again. It's in a small frame to accomodate conceal carry by someone my size. Here is a link to it: Kimber - Continuing The Legacy

Donnie has a Sig Sauer P226 in a 9mm. This thing shoots like BUTTER, it is SO smooth and nice to shoot. The grip used to fit me until we put Hogue grips on it, now the grip is too large for my hands to be ideal. I still shoot it and enjoy it, but it definitely fits Donnie better than me. I really like the feel of a 9mm, but as others have said IMO they are pretty penetrating rounds and can pass right through the target pretty cleanly. What you want is a mushrooming affect instead. Here is a link to it: Show Product Details

We also have a Kimber TLE/RL II. This thing is SWEET. It's another 1911, but in a full size frame. If you can handle a .45, I HIGHLY recommend you go pick one up Kimber - Continuing The Legacy This is the most luxurious, accurate and fun gun. It's my favorite in the house. Too big for me to conceal carry however.

Donnie's shotgun is a Remington 870 Magnum Express 12 ga w/18" barrel and knoxx spec ops stock. Donnie says it feels great with the custom stock, I say it kicks like a *x@@%* mule. LOL AWESOME choice for home defense.

Our other stuff is for fun and doesn't really apply to this home defense discussion.

You will like this JulieW.

My Kimber Gold Match with Crimson Trace laser grips (zeroed to 10 yards) and Wilson Combat mags.

Also have a Glock30, HK USP 9mm, Remington 870, and various rifles. I am getting a new HK USP compact in .357Sig on Friday.

As for a suggestion of gun. Go with HK, and pick the one that fits your hand the best, in the caliber you want. HK makes pretty much the ultimate combat/defense handguns. The HK USP MK23 is standard issue for Navy Seal Special Forces Operators. HK pistols have the most rigorous and thorough testing combat condition testing of any manufacturer.

That's a horrible gun and you should be embarrassed to own it. Send it to me immediately.
