oh...sorry ....9mm means milimeter...nothing to do with miles
|
That's the one thing I did know. lol. I was just using the miles vs meters as an example.
You are a wealth of information. Thank you sooooooo much. Quote: |
your sizes go; .22, 9mm, .40, .45, .50 smallest to largest. .22's are small and less propellent...but can actually richochet around (bounce) and cause damage in a person? (old wives tale?) they're kinda in their own catagory of caliber....almost like one damn mean bb gun...i guess u could say.
| So this means the .22 has the lest amount of kick/recoil but you may not be able to stop the person you are shooting at, because A- the bullet may not reach them. and B. It may not penetrate them (unless it bounces around in them). Is that correct? |

It may not penetrate them (unless it bounces around in them). Is that correct? | .22 have VERY little recoil...would be a good gun to use only for fun...or in a pinch...or if you've never shot a gun and just want to shoot one.
-a...the bullet will reach them...like any other caliber (this could go in to rifle talk..ha!) ...but it won't cause as much internal damage...(minimal stopping power...you'd have to hit a major organ spot on...or ur really just gonna piss someone off...<unless you believe the whole "it bounces around in a persons body thing"-im not gonna count on it>)
-b....it will penetrate...it just wont damage as much...believe it or not in a high stress situation...getting shot may not stop someone...especially by something like a small .22...thats why you hear cops talk about "stopping power" or "takedown/knockdown" power. They want to illiminate the threat as quickly as possible...and not give the bad guy a chance to hurt them.
-with a 9mm...they have to worry about the bullet going to far and hurting someone else.
-with a .40...its kinda best of both worlds...recoil, noise, speed, stopping power, piercing power fall between a 9 and a .45
-with a .45 ...large stopping power...less piercing (as in thru walls, car doors, etc...it'll do just fine going into a perso)...slower bullet..much louder...harder kick (harder kick can cause an untrained person to have a problem aiming on the next shot. "shot aquisiton"
-also i dont mind giving my advice...but PLEASE check how others react to it...i'd hate to misinform or mislead...if there's smething im wrng about. (its happened b4...ha!)

What does ATF paperwork mean? | alchol, tobacco, and firearms...either there is something about the gun requiring their paperwork(all guns require paperwork...i mean something that is different as a law enf. weapon requiring other paperwork) ...or proably because its a web site...it must go thru paperwork and delivered to a gun dealer...then you can pick it up after paperwork is o.k.'d. Either way it's a good thing... |

| Cool, I will look at the .40 along with the 9mm. I don't want to shoot my neighbor by accident. I will also ask to see and shoot a short barreled pistol gripped shot gun.
This site is awesome and you all are awesome. Where else can you get Doberman and Gun advice.
Thanks so much. I can't visit the range till next weekend. I have obligations all this weekend. I'm getting excited now. |

What does ATF paperwork mean? | i got my mossberg for around $2-250 i think..used (so long ago i cant remember)....they do look cool...and they are mean...no other purpose then to kill a person..barrel is to short to hunt...a pistol grip will hurt your hand after awhile of shooting for fun (12 ga.)....just home protection -close courter combat. At leaste this paticulr model. |

| regarding stopping power, caliber, velocity and all that...
I believe in KISS... if you stick with .380, .38 special, 9mm, .40 or .45 in a self defense round, you will be just fine. Then its a matter of how the particular gun feels to you and if you prefer revolver or semiautomatic.
Regarding self defense round: the standard bullet is FMJ = full metal jacket. That is lead encased in copper.
The goal to killing someone with a handgun is to maximize damage to vital organs. You don't want a bullet that will just zip on through the body and make an entrance and exit hole with minimal other damage. This is actually dangerous for home defense because a pass through bullet will go through the bad guy, through a wall and you might end up killing widow jones down the street. There are bullets made to do a lot of spreading out and breaking up when the hit the body at velocity. These bullets are called JHP (jacketed hollow point) - they are lead partially enclosed in copper with exposed hollow tips that easilty spread on impact.
The self defense JHP bullets are more expensive than the standard FMJ bullets so obviously you won't do your practice target shooting with the self defense bullets. Save those for when you need them.
That all said, self defense rounds in the standard self defense calibers (.380, .38 special, 9mm, .40, .45) will all do just fine for the purpose of stopping an intruder. You just need the right gun to fire them.
