How to recreate this look?

Hi guys,

From advice on my fur-babies, dealing with my crazy neighbors, to planning a birthday party - you guys are always there and always have the right answers, so Thank You very much!!!

I have a question, once again...My daughter will be turning 3 on the 1st of January. And while it's still a while away, I'm slowly starting to gather the supplies and decor for her birthday party. I will be making all the centerpieces myself, to save on money. This will be my first party where I'm actually doing a theme, it will be "winter wonderland".

I plan to recreate this look

You can also click on the link for an up-close look:

Winter Wonderland Dessert Table ? Celebrations at Home

Other than a dessert table, I plan to make one for salty foods, one for cake and one for presents, all decorated in similar fashion. I plan to drape the ceiling with some white tulle, snowflakes and similar.

However, I am having trouble with the background scene that's pictured. The blog states that in order to recreate that look, I should use white fabric and blue hued lighting. I know this sounds very stupid, but does anyone know what kind of fabric am I supposed to use? Do I just buy a bunch of white bed sheets? And also, I'm not sure what kind of light to use either. I have bluish Christmas lights, but the light in the photo seems different and unified so to speak, it doesn't have little light bulbs like Christmas ones do...any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

Go to your local fabric store, the fabric would be more of a sheer one. Texture is up to you. But you want it to be something light shines through nicely.

As for lighting. You can buy regular lightbulbs in colors. They look the same just painted blue/red/etc... Then set up a lamp behind it without a cover on it

Like Sam said, you could probably do something like this: Satco 03218 25B9-1/2/B 120V BLUE CAND. BASE S3218 Colored Decorative Light Bulb at eLightBulbs.com, and then go buy some white fabric. I'd probably do a white sheer iridescent fabric.

You might consider Tulle for the fabric. Just ask at the store and they can point you in the right direction. Great idea and good luck!

Being a guy, I can't help you with the party decorations, but I would suggest that you crate Domina BEFORE you setup your lovely "winter wonderland"!

It's a Dober-Oops waiting to happen... (e.g. bull in a china shop)

Thank you so much for your advice guys!!!

Spocksdad, you made me laugh so hard. That's a great tip of course.

I just remembered something, it may help someone that's throwing a party. We went to a bbq gathering two months ago. And people were double dipping and all!!!And some people were sick too. This is a habit of mine back from my restaurant college days, but anytime we would throw a little gathering there, our professors always made us make and serve individual dishes. For example, salads in individualized cups, the same thing with burgers, fruit salads and such ( I included some photo examples ). Chips and dips etc. And if someone wants more, well, they just grab another little cup. I plan to do the same thing for my daughter's party, I will have a menu that's more suited for kids and then another one that's more for grown ups, but they will all be in the little cups or similar, so that there is no double dipping.

And if anyone thinks of any winter wonderland party favors for little boys, please let me know.I have the little girls covered, each one will have a little non toxic, eco, child safe blue/pink/white Piggy Paint nail polish, a snowflake hairband and hairbow, and a little snowflake charm bracelet craft kit ( along with the pastries, but they can fill their own bags with sweets according to their taste ). I have no idea are there any winterish party favors that are suitable for little boys ( ages 1.5-4 ), so I'm still looking for them...

Gosh how adorable is that! Will you please post pics of this setup before the kiddies ransack it, and post them?!?

hmmm....boys... you could do some Mr. Freeze action figures, or something Batman and Mr. Freeze related maybe?

Thank you so much for the Batman and Mr. Freeze related ideas. Those sound fantastic. I am always full of ideas for little girls as I have one, but am lost when it comes to boys...I truly appreciate the tips.

Of course, I plan to take the pics of the whole set up and ambiance and post it.Hope it comes out good.I'm currently making these trees, they will go on each side of the cake table. This centerpiece is very pricey if bought at the store. But, I can make each for $20 myself. All you have to do is buy the mazanita branches ( or even gather some if you have a tree laying around ), spray paint them white, stick the branches into the styrofoam block and hang the crystals, snowflakes or whatever else. We also plan to have two balloon columns at the entrance. Those cost $55 each, but if you make them yourself, they will be $20 each. That's why I am starting on it now, as there a lot of pieces that I will have to make myself in order to save money. But it is crazy how identical of a decor you can make, for fraction of the price.

We have a cream carpet in those two large rooms where I'm planning to have that set up. And my daughter spilled some vanilla extract when she was a baby. And I cannot get that stain out for the life of me!!!It is a pretty large stain. i've been battling with it for a year already, and nothing. But, I devised a plan to disguise it. We'll just buy couple of bags of fake snow, and throw it all over the carpet, to hide the carpet ( and the stain ).
