I remember my 5th grade teacher explaining to us everything that was going to happen if we didnt get our sh&% together - that was 1978. EVERYTHING that she said has started to happen - global warming, gas prices, rainforest destruction, increased terrorism...

It is our own fault. I love the United States, our constitution and commitment to freedom and equality. But our short-sighted materialism is going to be the death of us and it is negatively impacting the rest of the world in many ways as well. We should have invested our technology in energy alternatives decades ago. We should have made huge advances in defeating worldwide hunger and poverty. And here we are now, complaining about 4 bucks a gallon when other countries have been paying triple that? Even more disgusting is how incredibly fortunate we are to even have possessions that need gasoline!! Millions of people are dying RIGHT NOW because they don't have the very basics.

Instead of not buying gas from a few oil companies, I think we would be better off banning mindless television and focusing on what really matters in life - worldwide, for EVERYONE.

Um, who does this guy think supplies the independent retailers? Just because you pull into a gas station that is not branded as Exxon, Mobil, Shell (in Canada as Esso, Shell, Petro Canada), etc, they still purchased their gas from one of the major refineries. The little independent retailers don't have refineries. They purchase from the majors. You can't not support the biggest oil companies, period. If you buy gas, it came from one of the majors, end of story.

Bravo! I get really frustrated with a lady I work with. Her husband is always quitting jobs and not working, she is always broke. She just bought a (used) SUV, gas guzzler, a few months ago. A couple of weeks ago she was bumming money for gas so she could get to work. I told her I don't understand why she didn't get an economical car if she can't afford gas- come on, we have known for a while prices are rising.

Her response was "well, I have 2 kids, I need an SUV". I told her I have 2 kids and don't NEED an SUV. She then said "well, I just like having an SUV, that's what I really like".

That's a HUGE problem with a lot of Americans. We have such a sense of ENTITLEMENT!! We deserve cable, and satellite, and gas guzzlers and $ coffees, even if some people can't really afford it. The same woman had her dad pay her light bill (she's 40 with kids, mind you) because her power got turned off. She worked some overtime, do you know what the first thing she is going to do with the money is? No, not pay her dad or all the others back- she is going to have her cable back on. Because- AND I QUOTE: "I can't live without cable, nobody deserves to not have TV to watch!"

Ok, off my soapbox now.

I would like to know why gas prices keep going up when the oil companies are made BILLIONS of dollars in PROFIT last year. Not gross income, but pure profit - and not millions of dollars, but billions of dollars! There is something extremely wrong with that.

I don't mind fossil fuels getting more expensive. What I do mind is that everything else gets expensive because of increased fuel prices. Pretty much anything you buy at the grocery store or large department stores is shipped halfway across the country or even from another continent. Seems like a huge waste to me. Not to mention the packaging. It's ridiculous. I think it's hilarious that general motors keeps making "new" vehicles, when there's nothing really new about them. It's pretty funny that they think with new technology they can make a heavier larger car get the same fuel economy when instead they could make a lightweight vehicle that gets incredible mpg. I want an electric or hydrogen powered vehicle, but no one wants to make it affordable. The only way to make that possible is to let people realize how the gas price really affects them, have some new advertising, and some new govt. funded research and development on alternative fuels. Japanese car manufacturers seem to be the only ones really trying to change things for the better rather than just a marketing ploy (like gm, ford etc.). Sure, GM makes a hybrid suv. It's a yukon, and it gets 20mpg. Pathetic. Toyota is working on a "plug in" prius vehicle that will charge overnight using about $0.12 of electricity. Hopefully with gas prices approaching the unfordable people will finally want one.

Why should they make profit? After all- the US is NOT the only consumer of oil. Other growing markets are purchasing oil and causing real competition over the price. The problem is and has always been our reliance on the rest of the world- the oil cartels and such.
Everyone else can explore their own resources and be energy independent BUT the US!! thats crap.

Yeah a hybrid that gets 20mpg is a joke- but its at least a start. I was seriously considering the Mercury Mariner SUV - but its 9k above the regular Mariner. It will take me 5 years to make up the difference in gas savings.

We had the answer... the electric car, but the gas companies paid to kill it. Google EV1 and watch "Who Killed The Electric Car?". Big corporations own us.
