Your Town History

The Urban Legends of Geist

There are a lot of “stories,” and “ghost stories” you hear about where I live. Geist was named after Clarence Geist, a twentieth century tycoon. Geist is a 7 billion-gallon reservoir. Geist was completed in 1943. Geist isn’t a municipality of it’s own. Geist is the second largest body of water in Indiana, and spans over four counties and three zip codes.

The history of Geist is troubled with mysterious dealings, such as rumored shady deals, bribery, and murder. A popular phrase among my friends and I is, “There’s something in the water in Geist.”

Geist was built over old Germantown. It was built in 1834 as the result of a murder of an Algonquin Indian. German immigrants, being disturbed by the incident, formed their own community on the banks of Fall Creek (a main road that circles Geist).

When Geist was constructed, it flooded over old Germantown. Much of the history of the town still sits beneath Geist today. I remember a few years back, someone was out skiing early in the morning, and took a spill. Their leg was sliced by the top of the steeple of the Old Germantown church. They were stitched up, and recovered soon thereafter. This occurred when the water was very low, and the dredgers came out and removed the steeple following the incident.

Though no records exist to confirm suspicions, many believe that Geist was built over several Native American burial plots.

So there’s the gist of the history of where I live. I’m sure that the fact that Geist means ghost in german fuels the rumors. Germantown is also said to be “The lost city under Geist.”

I’d love to hear the history of your town!

This is a picture of the first bridge crossing Fall Creek into Germantown. (This picture always reminds me of Sleep Hollow)

I took this picture the other day while on the bridge that now crosses into Geist.

Here are some more pictures of old Germantown, and Geist being erected:

The dam being built.

Some more pictures of Geist today (at least the few that aren't party pics, things can get pretty crazy on the lake)!

The creek that runs through my backyard runs from Geist.

Ever heard of a certain little salt dome called Spindletop, or the Lucas Gusher that started the Texas oil boom? Spindletop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for where I grew up, I assume that most people have heard about the Trail of Tears, in which the Cherokee in Tennessee were uprooted, and moved to Indian Territory (the current state of Oklahoma)? The military outpost there was called Fort Gibson. This is about the town. Fort Gibson, Oklahoma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is about the military post. this is where i grew up: Joppatowne, Maryland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

sometimes, i miss it. i was within walking distance of the water and frequently hung out in a park with piers everywhere, just fishing my summer days away. i spent a lot of time on Rumsey Island poking around some of the old house sites by the Rumsey Mansion, too.

No need to feel bad! I wouldn't have minded

I love the old pictures of where you live! What a pretty church!

I've never considered myself a huge history buff, but I find that I've been getting more into it lately. I also think it's interesting how many questions and mysteries we have from the past that could have been solved today had the technology existed.

What a cool idea !!

I live in Oak Ridge, TN. Whenever you say Oak Ridge everyone says they have never heard of it, so I just say "near Knoxville" What people don't realize is that you may not think you know Oak Ridge but you really do

We were built as the "Secret City" during WWII as part of the Manhattan Project. We helped build the Atomic Bomb and housed 3 plants, K-25, X-10, and Y-12. K-25 is no longer functional and the site is being cleaned up, Y-12 is still fully functional, tho only those with high security clearance know what goes on behind the walls and gates. X-10 is now the National Laboratory and all that fun stuff

We are also home to a rather nice straight stretch of water so in the spring and summertime we are over run with High School and College Rowing Teams

That picture's awesome! I had no idea! What a mysterious history, and how intriguing that it's still fully functional.

I remember driving through Tennessee when I was headed to Florida years ago. It was absolutely beautiful. There were hills and water almost the whole drive. It was probably my favorite state we drove through.

Yes I really don't like the modern design for the new one, hoping they pick one of the other two options (complete rebuild, or something very similar!). It's just such an iconic building, it will be a disservice to CHCH if there is another glass and concrete building, especially as like 85% of the CBD will be rebuilt, and probably in glass and concrete!

CHCH and the surrounding area is very beautiful! Some pretty photos, all from within an hour or two of my house

Wow, how interesting! Great idea for a thread!

I am from Milton Keynes, which is in Buckinghamshire, England.

Milton Keynes was essentially a group of villages which was made into a large town/small city. Previously, there were bronze age settlements and then iron age, anglo-saxon and medieval settlements in the area.

The city itself was designed to be very modern but at the same time very green. The original plan for the city was to be 'city in the forrest' with no buildings being taller than the height of the tallest trees, so from a distance you could not see buildings in MK, only trees. There are about 20 million trees in the city, I believe. We have a lot of roundabouts too.

One of the encorperated villages is Bletchley, which is home to Bletchley Park, where the codebreakers during world war 2 broke the enigma and houses the worlds first programable computer

We had/have the worlds first peace pagoda in the western world.

We are very multicultural and the city is famous for encouraging local artists. We have lots of city sculptures but we're most famous for our concrete cows LOL! I could write a lot about those in itself, but you can read about them here Concrete Cows - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They get painted/vandalised by local artists quite a lot...theyve been given varios paint jobs

I'm diggin' the concrete cows I bet local artists painting them could be quite entertaining!

I also think that's really interesting about Bletchley and the World War 2 code breakers (cool picture too).

There have been some really good 'adaptations' just that I can remember they have been painted in pajamas...as zebras...beheaded (like a Damien Hurst sculpture!!)...and one was kidnapped once and held to randsome LOL!

Their skeletal paint job is my favourite though. The artist who did it is a friend of a friend and he painted a few other sculptures in MK skeletal too
