How much do you feed your dog?

My boy just turned 6 months old. I secretly call him the food whore, bec he will do anything for food. He eats 2 x per day and gets 2.5 cups of dry kibble at each feeding.(purina pro plan puppy) he just acts hungry all of the time. He has been to the vet, and has been wormed etc. he is current on all vaccines, heart worm preventative, and frontline. He isn't skinny, just very lean. Rouleaux is fed twice a day as well- 3 cups in the morning and 2 at night with warm water at each feeding. In the morning he gets a 3v capsule for his skin and coat.

He is currently on FROMM (grain free), and because he is growing an extra cup or two is actually beneficial because it is lacking the unnecessary fillers, grains, etc. He has only been on the diet less than a month with significant improvements!

He is becoming much softer, and his skin healthier. He seems happier too!

He was on Orijen Large Breed Puppy and although I liked the food his stools were soft and his coat was brittle. It was just the way it affected him. I would still recommend the brand (the fish based food was great, but the results not as quick at the fish based FROMM)

At his peak, my growing dobe would eat up to 7 cups a day (total, not per meal), if I remember right, and he still looked fit and lean.

Now that he's grown he eats 2 cups a day total.

Feed him more. Try 3 cups twice a day. When Eli was 9 months to about 18 months he ate 8 cups a day. I kid you not. At first he was on natural balance limited and then acana limited ingredient. He has never been heavy, always lean. At about 2 years old he was eating around 6 1/2 cups to 7 cups and he started to look not as cut in the middle so I started feeding him less. I feed according to the way my dog looks, lean is good too lean is not. Puppies grow fast and I would think 6 cups would be fine for your puppy. If you increase the amount and he looks a bit chubby just cut him back. At 4 years old my doberman eats 2 1/2 cups twice a day of Natures Variety instinct. He looks perfect and weighs 79lbs currently and is 28 inches high. When younger he ate so much I could hardly believe it.

Every now and then I will give Rou a Instinct Raw patty in his meals. I feel the difference is a majority of us feed grain free foods that you eventually feed less of an amount because it is so nutritious and filling with less unnecessary fillers. I personally like the idea of a grain free food- Instinct is a good brand.

My girl is just turning 4 and eating 2 - 2 1/2 cups in the morning and evening. But she thinks she is starving all the time and would eat until she explodes. I have even caught her eating bird seed. As a puppy, I just let her free feed and had no issues with her over eating. I figured a growing pup is a hungry thing, so I let her dictate how much she felt comfortable eating.

My Dobie is 2, and gets a raw quarter chicken with some bones a day. Or about 4 chicken drumsticks a meal 2x a day. I think you need to increase his amount since he will be starting to grow wider.

Elka gets 2-3 cups a day of Blue Buffalo Wilderness formula (we rotate flavors). Sometimes less, depending on what other members of the household have also given her.

at peak Flirt was eating 7 cups a day and my 50 lb Vizsla was eating 6. Right now Flirt is 70 lbs and eats 5, he is 50 l bs and eats 4. My 37 lb Vizsla who is 9.5 eats 3 cups. I feed half raw and half kibble. The 16 week old VIzsla at 22ish lbs eats 3 cups at least too.

My dogs are VERY active though.

Skoll is currently on 2 cups 2x per day on Science Diet. I plan to switch him off of that and onto EVO once he settles in. With the higher protein content, he may need less of the EVO than he eats of the SD.

Ethan's top food intake was 6 cups a day, but that was just briefly. Usually it was more like 5 to 5 1/2 cups a day (Pro Plan Chicken & Rice). He's now 20 months and eats 4 cups a day of Pro Plan Performance. He is currently 77 pounds.

Cher is 73 pounds, 7 years old, and eats 4 cups of Pro Plan Chicken & Rice a day.

Murphy gets 2 cups of Orijen LB Puppy twice a day.

In addition to this, he gets about 1/2 a cup of Hills LB Puppy for training. I would never give that to him as a meal, but we were given a free mini-bag at the vet and figured, "meh, why not use it for training?" It stinks like crazy and he loves it so it's perfect for training. When the bag runs out we will probably just use regular kibble.

The Okie Dobie will become famous soon enough
How much is a normal dobie supposed to weigh? Kolten weighed 80 pounds at 9 months and when he was healthy before he tore his ACL and then all this other stuff started he was 102 and not fat at all. Now he is barely holding 87 pounds and looks really thin and bony. I'm feeding him 6 -8 cups a day of Earthborn Coastal Catch (grain free). He acts like he is starving all the time.

From Wikipedia:

The Doberman is a dog of medium size. Although the breed standards vary among kennel and breed clubs, the dog typically stands between 26 to 28 inches 27.5 being ideal (66 to 72 cm), the female is typically somewhere between 24 to 26 inches, 25.5 being ideal (61 to 68 cm).[1][3] The Doberman has a square frame: its length should equal its height to the withers, and the length of its head, neck and legs should be in proportion to its body.[1] European lines, particularly those from the former Yugoslavia and former Soviet Union, tend to be larger than those in North America.

There are no standards for the weight of the Doberman Pinscher. The ideal dog must have sufficient size for an optimal combination of strength, endurance and agility.[3] The male generally weighs between 70 and 90 pounds (34 and 45 kg) and the female between 60 and 90 pounds (27 and 41 kg).

I obviously feed raw and the guidelines for raw are 2-4% of the dogs ideal bodyweight. On average I feed mine 2 pounds a day.

I really have no input regarding kibble. Sorry.

Sylvs is a jewel in the roughSylvs is a jewel in the roughSylvs is a jewel in the roughSylvs is a jewel in the rough
2 weeks ago I have changed Portia's food from Eukanuba Puppy to Organix adult. She gets 2 heaped cups a day and she behaves like I am starving her( she has not lost any of her weight but i think she is missing the bulk).. She scavenges the whole garden, picks her own tomatoes, goes to the kitchen and raids the pantry. So I thinking now it's time for RAW, she would be much happier on that, but I am a bit scared to make the commitment and it sounds like this is a biggy..
I also have a 10 yo flat coated retriever (adopted 6 moths ago) and if i go the RAW way then i would put both of them on it (i would hate dishing up fast food to one and gourmet to the other so the deal is either both or none)

My question here is - can 10 year old chap handle change to RAW - or am i going to introduce trouble for him..At the moment he is in a great shape, has a bit of a joint problem as expected teeth ok for his age..

Should I be mixing and giving them RAW only few times a week?

Do you add any veggies to it?

We free feed.
Always have.
Currently have a 7.5yr old GSD & 1.5yr old Dobe. They eat when they want. My dogs get plenty of exercise. High quality kibble.
Both are fit & healthy.

I feed raw, so measure in pounds rather than cups. Wheeler, 4yo Male eats 3# per day, split into 2 meals. He weighs 90#. Lola is 13 months, weighs 62 pounds and eats 2.5# per day, split between 2 meals. 3 days a week when she goes to Daycare she gets an additional 1/2# lunch.

When chase was on natures variety, he ate one cup twice a day. Then his thyroid took a nose dive, he went from a healthy 85lbs to 103lbs in less than a year.

He is getting great exercise, I didn't want to cut 2 cups of food any lower, so I switched him to purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach, he is getting 3 cups a day split up. We will see if this helps at all. His bloodwork is to be done in 2 weeks, thyroid and wellness.

So, it all depends on your dogs health, fitness, and body type.

Do you add any veggies to it?
Absolutely! The first two dogs I switched to raw were a young Doberman and a ten year old muttley girl who had been on chemo for lymphoma for a year.

You can start out however you want. I started out by saying, "Here. Eat this. It is your food!" My dogs have never had any issues with new stuff, primarily (I think) due to the fact that they have always gotten table scraps and a wide variety of stuff... their digestive tracts have always been accustomed to everything.

I think that there may well be value in veggies and fruits, although I would not make a case for their being a necessity. I did Veggie Day once a month, and Cuisinarted a wide variety (maybe 20+) of different veggies and fruits selected for this and that. I fed about two pounds of meat/bones/organs per day per dog, along with about four ounces of veggie/fruit squish.
