| Riley eats Canidae ALS, and has done so ever since his breeder transitioned him to it. He loves it, coat is nice, nice poops, 3 cups of food a day and the big bag lasts 1.5 to 2 months for me. Not very expensive either. Only problem is there is only one pet supply store we have found quite a bit away that carries it so far. For some reason all the big name places around here (Petco, etc.) don't carry it at all. Hmph!

| I have a 1 year old Boxer right now and we will be getting our soon to be 11 week Doberman and I was thinking of going to the Canidae all life stages formula.
Would that be a good choice for both dogs or not good for the puppy yet?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

Any input would be greatly appreciated. | This is the perfect thread. Although I am partial to what I am feeding my boy (FROMM), you should look at what others are feeding and look up the brands by website. Compare and see how you feel, maybe Canidae is better or maybe another brand stands out
Good Luck!

Good Luck! | Thank you!
Right now we have our Boxer on a steady diet that was recommended by the vet as a cheaper but good dog food, but with the new addition, I wanted to see what would be a quality affordable food or option (not cheap, because I know cheap food is not good food).
My girlfriend and I have picked two dog breeds (Boxer and Doberman) that have more health related issues than most dogs, so I want to be extremely careful with how we handle the diet, but not break the bank, with some expensive things we have had come up. |

| Has anyone had any bad experiences with blue buffalo wilderness puppy? Toorc was on Iams and I switched him to that because my trainer said that I could be doing more for him nutrition wise. Day two on the food transition and he got bumps all over his noggin and body I had the vet look at him when we went in for his third shot series and even though I told him that i switched foods and he suddenly developed the bumps, he just have him a shot of cortisone and said he probably just got bit by a bug -___- my thoughts are allergies. It has been almost two weeks and his poo is looking great and so is his coat but the bumps remain. He's also not dandruffy or itchy either.

| Is anyone familiar with 4Health dog good from tractor supply? My pup Niko (formerly Tango) has been on the puppy food for a week now...as far as Poop goes its %100 better we've tried 2 other foods and they both made him horribly sick to his stomach. He loves the new food but he still has dry skin. Ge has a dandruff look constantly. He does not scratch just looks flaky. Any suggestions on something for his skin? Somebody told me to add a little fish oil to his food... |

| Dallas gets TOTW Pacific Stream for puppies and at his mid-day meal I supplement with 1000mg of fish oil. He has a beautiful glossy black coat and his mahogany markings are richer in color.

| My puppy (now 17 weeks) was initially on Iams puppy food. I switched her over to BlueBuffalo puppy food.... but I blended the two foods for a week or so, now she's just on Bluebuffalo, and she loves it and hasn't had any problems on it. It's the only good food near us, as I live rural. If I had access to some of the other highly ranked foods, I my have tried those. I'll try the fish oil as suggested above too. |

| I feed prey model raw. My boy goes absolutely nuts for it and his coat and teeth (what few he has left) have never been better.
Before I fed raw, I've had good luck with Blue Wilderness and Merrick Grain-free, especially for dogs prone to dry skin or sensitivities.

| I feed Blue Buffalo Basics for Large Breed. Lil Mama has a sensitive stomach and I tried several good brands in search of the right food for her. It was a horrible few months of transitioning with boiled chicken and rice in between to help her stomach settle before trying a new food. Blue Buffalo Basics won! |

| TOTW Wetlands Howdy,
Lasker recently turned 4 and we're putting him back on TOTW (Wetlands, although they're all fine with him). We've tried the following foods:
1. Blue Buffalo: Too expensive and Lasker had loose stools.
2. Diamond naturals: Great price, but not enough protein and has excess filler.
3. TOTW: Still a bit on the expensive side, but Lasker's coat and reduced back yard "bombs" seal the deal. Less gas compared to BB and Diamond Naturals! |

IMO I don't like BB too much. When it comes to dog food (not including veterinary rx diets) I am not a fan of P&G... too many recalls.
My boy was started on raw and also ate Orijen LB Puppy. Today he is on raw and on Orijen six fish or regional red (my boy is 9 months so I put him on an ALS food).
He has also been on Fromm brand 4 star grain free only:
Fromm has 4 grain free choices: Game Bird, Beef Frittata, Surf & Turf and Salmon Tunalini.
Also 5 grain diets: Chickem a la veg, pork & applesauce, duck & sweet potato, salmon a la veg, and whitefish & potato. I keep him on grain free kibble though.
Unfortunately, the transition didn't last long as he seemed to get bored of them quick. Regional Red was what he needed and hasn't let up yet.
I recently picked up a bag of Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost (couldn't resist the price ) and he loves it (the venison and lamb flavor) but we still stick with Orijen... never let me down.

| | Big Dog | I had my pup on totw large breed pup and switched to nutro large breed and all of a sudden she is smelling of dog. She got a bath and the nxt day smelled again. Could it be from the food? Anyone experience this? When we got her she was on raw. I choose not to do that route as i have a baby and dont want to chance any of my kids getting sick from the bacteria that may linger. Anyone have any suggestions? | my all time favorite is Vets Choice made by hows small company in Central NY.They often have a booth at shows in that region. I also like Eagle Pack.
Unfortunately deceitful, now ex husband has left me with much less available income to feed 5 Pyrs. Right now they are on Blue Seal Active Dog Formula and doing very well on it. However, all my dogs and puppies especially are supplemented with raw as well as venison or any other meat I can get my hands on. In the winter they all get doggie stew with their dry food. |

I fed this to my cats (pre dog) and they have had recalls- not to say most brands haven't, but I would want something more reliable than Nutro.
TotW is a good, affordable grain free brand.
Why not do Raw anymore? I have noticed a significant difference in my dog overall on raw in the morning and kibble at night.

| | Lil Pup | I don't have a Doberman yet, but I have a boxer female 2yo. I feed wellness grain free and created my own recipes using fresh foods and veggies. The online database webmd has some interesting info on protein for dogs. They clear up a lot of misconceptions and myths about protein intake for dogs |

| New Doberman owner here (well I got her about 4 months ago) and I have studied more for this little girl than I have for my degree!
Started out raw because I was determined to give her the best regardless of the fact I'm poor and she's expensive lol. Unfortunately, her stomach did not like raw. She would puke sometime hours after eating it and it would look just like it did freshly prepared.. Loose stools as well.
I switched to Orijen LB as it seems to be a second best (opinions vary, I know) and she seems to be doing good. She has always had dandruff pretty bad so I started adding salmon oil every day and it seems to help but she still flakes after a good ole head to toe scratching. She eats about 5 cups a day and the 30lb bag last exactly one month.
She has a very shiny coat and seems to be very healthy. She is 56lbs at 7.5months today.
BTW, Orijen is not easy to find in my neck of the woods. I had one store that kept it stocked for me in my recent town. I recently moved (with about 3 days of food left in the bag) and luckily the one store in my new town that stocks it had one bag. The owner said she doesn't sell much of it, but she would keep it in stock for Tango.
I'm loving the Dobie life so far and glad to be a member of a new forum!!

I found one store that sells it by me - well, about 30 minutes away from me - and they said they usually have it but to call and make sure, otherwise they'd order it. There are some online retailers that you can find on Orijen's site if you ever had a lot of trouble.
