| Athena's ear crop Hey guys my pup Athena is getting her ears cropped on Thursday. She is 13weeks and the vet said that it is the perfect time to get them done. There are a couple pictures I will be uploading of her and how big she is getting. |

| Another vet advocating 13 weeks for a perfect cropping age? Are these vets who are actually against cropping and suggest cropping so late in hopes that it will be ugly and very difficult for new owner to deal with and will hopefully deter them from the procedure next time around? |

| Sorry OP, but I've always heard the best time to crop is more like 7-9 weeks and should not be done later than 12 weeks. The chances of them being able to stand are going to be much less. :/
I would really reconsider leaving your pup natural or you risk the crop & flop...and putting her through an unnecessary surgery.

| I'm not sure but Dr. Whitford is a good vet and he actually has a couple dobermans of his own. Both of which have their ears cropped. He says 12-14 weeks is the ideal time to get them done. |

| I'm sorry that you didn't get to the forum sooner - the general window for ear cropping is said to be 7-12 weeks and the best cropping vets don't do it past 12 weeks of age.
I really would also consider leaving the ears natural at this point due to the dog's age. Many vets can crop but that doesn't mean that they do it well. I dunno.. I wouldn't risk something that I have to stare at for the entirety of my dog's life. Plus, floppy ears are fun to play with.

He's a very nice guy.
He sucks at cropping.
Some of his customers are actually happy with the crop, because it usually does stand, and they haven't seen an artistic, well-done crop, and so don't know the difference.
They look like a cross between bat-ears and pit-bull ears, really unattractive, and takes away from even a pretty head.
OP, you might benefit from taking a look around the forum and checking out some well-done and flattering crops here. Also look at the Dobermans here who have nice natural ears--Amelia from the UK's Rupert comes to mind immediately, but I'm sure there are others.
Myself, I'd either want a very flattering crop on a dog, or natural ears. I think an ugly crop just ruins the looks of the dog completely.

| My breeder suggested dr. Whitford because that's where he got her parents ears done. I'm looking at getting a medium crop done like her parents. He got her parents ears done at around the same age as Athena and their ears turned out absolutely gorgeous. I can upload pictures of her parents if you guys want. |

| It's because those are pictures of her parents when they were puppies.
And come to find out Athena will be 3 months (12weeks) next week on the 23rd so I am getting her ears done at the right time. |

| The shape and length of those crops are fine by me. So now it's gonna be all on you to make sure that the aftercare is correct. Please read the tutorials on this forum several times so that it sinks in and you have all the supplies needed. |

There really isn't much to it typically, the ears will likely be secured to a cup or sponge, with the stitched edges exposed so they can breathe. Make sure the dog isn't rubbing/scratching the stitches and have stitches removed when your vet tells you. You don't start posting the ears until the stitches are out, and the ears are entirely healed as you don't want to tape any areas that aren't healed. |

Some common care though is to keep scratching to a minimal (redirect redirect redirect) and to apply poly or neosporing to the edges, otherwise let the ears heal naturally until the sutures come out and posting begins
Also make sure when she comes home tomorrow her sutured edges aren't covered in any tape, they should be open to the air to breathe and heal.
Good luck, i'm sure you've missed your baby
