hey i was just wondering whats the earliest some people have got their dogs ears to stand after being cropped. My dog Zombie is 10 & 1/2 weeks old and she got them cropped at 7 weeks (june 20). wWhen i change the posts the ears seem to be standing ok already and i was wondering if we might almost be done.....did many searches on internet to find how early some people have finished but found nothin so i thought id ask for peoples personal experiences.

For show crops, just after 5 months, closer to 6 but I taped until 6 months. I had one with a medium crop and his stood at 4 months.

The key is to NEVER let them fall. When you get the point of taping and letting them down for longer periods, put them back up BEFORE they fall.

Tango was 7 months old, he only had his ears down for short periods and they never were allowed to fall. Every pup is different, but I would post until your pup is done teething. Good luck.

Keyra took 9 months (long show crop). Krieger took 4 months

Patience and persistence are the keys. When you are sure you are done, post them one more time.

One show crop stood in five days and another took tilll about a year but I took a break for about five months on him. He just had a slight lean in the upper third and I knew I could come back and finish it later. I came back and taped it for a couple of weeks with masking tape just wrapped around where the break was.

Most of my crops except the one that stood after one taping have stood after teething was thru at six months. That is the most common. Parker's ears took the longest of all my dobes. He had a setback tho where I had to leave his ears down for a bit cuz of some wet nasty stuff that appeared on his fold from me not removing the glue on his ears.

You could be done but the only way to know is to leave them down and see what they do. I would take them down early in the morning, one day when you can be with him, and leave them down all day to see what they do. If they are still up that nite, you can leave them down over nite and see what they look like the next morning. If he has laid on them and one or both are down wait an hour and see if they are gonna come back up and go from there. If they don't come back up the keep taping and maybe try again right at three months. At his age it want do anything permanent if they come down as you have plenty of time left for taping. But if at any time while they are down they start to weaken but them back up immediately.

On my post earlier, I forgot to say that while the ears are down, if you decide to test them, that the minute you seen any weakening of the ears, leaning, tips dropping, then be sure to tape them right back up as they are not done if they show any sign of weakening.

Sorry about that!!!

Meghan, I wouldn't call that a failure. They look good. I know some are ramrod-straight but I wouldn't beat myself up over such a minor difference. Ahem,...but then, look at my avatar pic.

Forgot to add; most of the time his are totally straight. I caught him in a mellow moment,.

Megan they look perfect! Jonsey looks to have the same crop exactly.
So I have a question about testing then. When they are not taped, they are mostly up but she moves them around a lot. When she's focused they look perfect. So how exactly do you tell if they're not strong enough. Will they fall completely down or? Also, should they be taped to tip towards her back slightly or straight up perpendicular to her head?
As a side note, we purposely put a bend at the tip of both ears facing outwards, it looks so good and after one day it stayed when we changed posts (they got wet). Lol can't help but play with her in the water....first dog that will just jump in!

It depends on the dog but 10 1/2 weeks is way too soon. People say around 6 months because that's when their adult teeth is pretty much done growing so all those resources can refocus on the ears. It also depends on the ears themselves though and what kind of a crop you have.

My 6 month old has a show crop (longer cut, takes longer to post) and the breeder told us that she had long ears as a puppy so hers are going to take much longer than we anticipated. We've actually heard people who have had to take up to a year.

The biggest mistake people make is unposting once the ears can stand, it's better to post a little longer than necessary than take them down too soon. I'd say wait until at least 6 months even if the ears are standing on it's own. I've heard of ears standing for a couple of months and then slowly one of them will flop over so better safe than sorry!

A good rule of thumb would be after teething stop and if you think they are done... do it for another month to be sure... I didn't follow that rule but that is before I had cool Dobe mentor's and was reading on here

You want them to be straight or tipped slightly out not in when you tape...
I didn't do a center brace like some I see I just taped the ears

Her ears are about a medium crop with lots of bell. I think they stand so well already because of the bell. We'll keep posting just to be sure.
