Ear Cropping - AGE APPROPRIATE??

our newest family member, Griff, is 8 weeks old...I see so many different 'takes' on the appropriate age for ear cropping...it's been many years (college) since my last dobe - if I get his ears done in 2 weeks, am I waiting too late?? my breeder says she has all of hers done at 12 weeks...for cryin out loud what is the threshold?

by the way I had a vet tell me that we would 'very unlikely get his ears to stand' after 9 weeks...I'm baffled by all this.

I would say that MOST breeders have their pups done around 7 weeks. I wouldn't wait until 10 weeks personally...

It can depend on the puppy. Ear set, thickness of ears, length of crop, style of crop, vets experience/skill level and follow up posting all affect how well the ears stand. Ear cropping is one of the areas where all vets are not equal. It is as much an art form as it is a medical procedure.

I don't know who your vet is but I would make sure that this vet is experienced in dobe crops. If you post your area someone here may be able to help you find a good crop vet.

The older they are when they are cropped and longer the crop, the longer they have to be posted.

I have seen pups cropped at 12 weeks whos ears stood fine (they generally have to be posted longer) but there are so many variables as above that you really need a good ear crop vet to determine your pups max age/odds.

whereever you go and read about it,they say,you shouldn't crop the ears after 12 weeks.we cropped Apolles when he was 10 weeks old and his ears stay fine.i think between 7 and 10 weeks, its a very good time and you should be ok.

My vet in Tucson, Arizona... Buena Pet Clinic...told me that it depends on the puppy. The gist was that not all doberman ears are the same. Some are thin, some are thick. The thinner they are, the more time you have. The thinner the ear, the quicker they'll stand. I had my pup done at 10 weeks. Vet said I had maybe 3 more weeks left.

Said he has 25 years experience.. I'm in Boise, ID and have had a hard time finding a vet that will do the crop. This vet will do it, but said he tells all of his patients to not do it for humane reasons. He wants to do it later because its easier for the dog to recover, but it sounded too late.

Got my guys done @12 weeks by vets order, 30+ year cropper.

I just assumed the difference between cropping at 7-8 weeks vs 12 weeks was a tiny bit more ear length from growth...didn't ask though.

My guy took about a month and a half to post and he was standing...posted him a total of 4-5 times, iirc. Medium crop length.

Most vets that do really crappy crops have many years of experience doing really crappy crops. And no, it's HARDER on them the longer you wait. The cartilage just keeps forming and hardening as they age, it's much LESS traumatic cropping while the ears are small and before they start setting. Even more so with tails and dew claws, which is why they are docked and removed at THREE DAYS old.

How do people even find some of these zombie threads? If you search cropping there would be hundreds of threads from just the last year, no idea how you find one from 4 years ago lol

Hi everyone, I'm new to this Forum stuff but what I've been seeing on her is so vague. Every doberman has a different pace to how long it's ears will stand. Doesn't matter if you get them from 7-10 weeks, if the csrtilage doesn't grow strong enough it won't matter when the ears were cropped, but the younger the dogs are does give them a greater chance technically. If you have a doberman that you want it's ears cut, I would say at the latest do them at 17 weeks at the Absolute latest. At this point in their lives they have grown a ton and there ear cartilage has developed immensely. My doberman OZ had his ears cut 3 weeks from today on the 27th of October and he was 15 weeks old and his ears are already standing by themselves. He has a little limp in them but I will be posing for a month or so more so that they never fold. So ignore the 7-10 week appropriate age to get ears cropped. And him being a little older he has handled the posting a lot better than most puppies I've dealt with. He hasn't even grown int his ears yet, his head will get wider and make the ears even easier to stand. So basically I just wanted to share a success story for those who are contemplating getting there pups ears cropped at an older age. I will post pics in a month or so to show you the final look. His left ear hasn't settled so it looks longer, it doesnt have the bend in the ear crease yet but that will come with more time.

Unless you, personally, TylaMonstaa, are an experienced veterinarian cropper or a very seasoned and reputable breeder, I would not suggest to just "ignore" the recommended ages to get a pup's ears done. Do you have any factual medical evidence to back this up? You say every dog is different, so perhaps what worked with your pup wont work with someone else's.

Also, I've never heard of any reputable cropper that would crop a 17 week old puppy. Could you provide proof that this is an okay age to crop?

Actually Tylamonsta the left ear is correct. The right ear has a pocket which is making it shorter.

Just looked at the pic..do a search for "pockets", tylamonstaa, and you will see methods to correct this. Additionally, OZs nails could probably benefit from a trim.

Age, it varies!

Not by any means do i say ignore age competely, but what i am saying is to not conform yourself to think its impossible to do at a later age. But many vets would stop at 16 weeks to do ear croppings. at that point the cartilage is settled more than THEY WOULD LIKE and it hurts the dog more even though they are under Anesthesia . But my doctor has told me the age appropriate are based of being the best points in the puppies life to do so, because the cartilage isnt grown vut the cartilage doesn't develop that much between these ages. I say if you have a pup with his ear cut to do 16 weeks if not earlier but if your doctor allows 17 at the max. I see too many posts saying the ears wont stand blah blah blah, its crap. By any means dont i want people to think because my dog did it any dog can, like i said each dog is different but im jut showing it CAN be done. Oz is on 100% raw food diet, Hes the healthiest he can be, which might aid to why his ears are standing with ease.
