Pocket Photos

With all of the new questions about "pockets" I thought I would use some of Jax's photos as examples. Here is what his ears looked like right after I took them down and noticed he had "pockets". His right ear is his worst.

ETA: You may need to view them in full size to see the pockets easier.

From the back:

Another good one of "pockets", not so good of Jax.

From the front:

I hope these help people to see what a pocket looks like. Just to make me and Jax feel better, here is a picture of him after only about a week of corrective posting, and he was about 16 weeks when I first noticed the pocket.

Thanks--your pictures tell the story. I imagine the extra vitamins he gets from chewing on the bushes help straighten things out too. LOL

I had to get my laughter under control and wipe the tears before I could type! He must have been feeling reserved when I took these!

Gunnar look at this link. BlackInBlack has a great post that shows how to use what she called a "pillow". JDD also showed me a method with using backer rod for the posts and then using a piece of the backer rod cut in half and put it where the pocket is. Now his ears aren't perfect yet. His pocket will come back if left unposted for several hours. I am re-posting after letting his ears air out for about an hour. But in that hour I can get some nice ear shots! I will keep posting for awhile and see where we are around 5 - 5 1/2 months. Good luck!

Does this taping job look OK?

Thanks for this. I haven't posted ears in 12 years, but hope to be doing it this spring! I never posted with bumpers, so what are they for? I saw them in the directions you posted, but are they just to put tension on the bell area?

The bumpers were the only step that I missed. So hopefully after two months he'll be fine. I was just worried that I caused it. And how do you post the incorrect way to cause pockets? Just to make sure. I hate thinking Im still missing a step. I do think my bumpers might be a little longer than in the photo...

Most pockets I have dealt with were caused by using a brace between the ears, or by the ear slipping down a bit on the post and thus puckering at the base.

This is how NOT to cause pockets

-Don't use a brace between the ears.
-Pull the ears out and away from the head at approx 10 and 2 o'clock positions. (Note - if you have a puppy with a really high ear set like my Lola, it is impossible to get to 10 & 2, just get as close as you can).
-Be sure to stretch the ear the full length of the post (post should be a little longer than the ear).
-Make sure post is securely situated in the ear.
-Run a piece of tape over the top of the ear and the top of the post, this will help keep the ear from slipping down.
