Euthanasia happens all over the world... not Just NY.
At least in NY they use Humane Euthanasia, some states still use gas chambers and other horrible forms of Euthanasia. | Yes, and it gets tiresome to hear people blame the shelters--when they are simply doing a horrible but very necessary job, caused by all the people who aren't responsible pet owners.
Not their fault, and it's soul-numbing work.
A candle for the poor dog, and also one for the good employees of the shelter.

| We can't save them all. The real war is against the puppy mills and unethical breeders!! Pet stores should be made to get their dogs from rescues and carefully screen owners. If you can't rescue a dog then give a donation to a rescue this year. Educate people about buying dogs from pet stores. Encourage them to save a dog instead. Promote spay and neuter. I am heart broken for this boy. But for every dog euthanized, there are thousands more. The pitt bull population is comepletely out of control. I hope for an answer.

I really don't think you should feel guilty about getting a puppy from an ethical breeder. I wholeheartedly support rescue, work with rescue, and will have another rescue dog in the future. But I won't buy into the idea that supporting really great ethical breeders is wrong. Many great breeders are also involved in rescue, too.
sheezbusy is right - the war is against puppy mills and backyard breeders. Spay and neutering pet dogs has to be a part of that, to prevent all the accidental litters.

sheezbusy is right - the war is against puppy mills and backyard breeders. Spay and neutering pet dogs has to be a part of that, to prevent all the accidental litters. | You are right. Logically I know you are right. And I would never, ever want to imply or support the rediculous notion that reputable breeding is in any way wrong. But emotionally I struggle with my decision and almost punish myself a bit over it. I feel the odds of my girl finding a great home were so high because her breeder would have insisted on it. But the odds of a rescue dog getting a fantastic life are so stacked against them.
Last night I was snuggled up with her in front of the fire just loving on her and my thoughts turned to this pup, Roy. I teared up and there it was...guilt.
I'm sorry to all the Roys of the world.

| Hilary,
Two of my Dobes came from breeders. One a BYB, and one from a very well know Dobe breeder and judge. I rescued a show boy and gave him what I hope was the best two years of his life. Now I am planning on doing Dobe fostering for DRU. Enjoy your puppy and give her lots of love and attention. Maybe getting a rescue dog will be in your future someday!
If you really feel guilty, go to Special Needs Dobermans - Helping Owned AND Rescue Dobes! and sponsor a Dobe in need.... even for a month. You will feel SOOOO good about it!! Just because you have a puppy doesn't mean you can't help.
Lisa

I'm sorry to all the Roys of the world. | You're allowed.
I'm pretty sure whoever counts up the karmic brownie points is okay with us sometimes giving a great home to an animal that came from an ethical, well-thought-out breeding program, too.
I'm sorry to all the Roys, too, and it's even harder when you go there and see them and pet them and then have to say goodbye, because you can only save so many, and no more.
There are other ways to help--educating, passing along the message, volunteering, donating, but most importantly--and this I know you will do and are doing--take lifelong good care of the dog(s) you have.
If everyone would just do that, there would be no shelters.
