Looking for a Dobe

I live in MN and am looking to adopt a rescue dobe. However most rescues don't like people that don't have fenced in yards. I do live 3 miles from a Off-leash dog park. I have owed dogs all through my childhood including a dobe and a rott. I started a rescue for pitbulls 5 years ago. But it only stayed open for 6 months as I then moved to Tampa for 6 months to help out a friend. I moved back and have spent my time getting life back to normal. I am prepared now to add someone to that. I have permission from my landlord to have a dog after alittle convicing. If you know of any dobes in my area (Minneapolis, MN) that are looking for a loving forever home. Please let me know.

The other thing you could do is check on petfinder.com - and periodically call/stop in at the local shelters - they do periodically get purebred dobes in. The MN Valley Hu Soc - had 2 in a couple months ago. You might consider volunteering at the local humane society, too. Then you'll know what dogs are coming in and can get to know them - and in the mean time get to spend time w/ dogs until you get your own.

Hello Reddobes,

Thank you for you reply. I also see you are in MN as well and a fan of the red dobes. They are my favorite color as well and I like the females more because they tend to be just alittle smaller than the males.

I have been checking petfinder almost everyday for the past 3 months. Do they forget to remove dogs from the site when they are adopted? I have seen some of those dogs in IA on there for many months. I have also been looking at the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley/Coon Rapids with no luck.

If you hear of anything I would really appreciate it. I am going to continue looking as well. This has been a long awaited dream of mine to own another dobie.

It's not uncommon for the purebred dogs to get adopted out before ever being put on petfinder - and some shelters update their lists on there more often than others. Also, some shelters don't individually list puppies/kittens as they tend to have a lot at certain times of year and they are often adopted out quickly compared to the older animals. You will often see more male dobes in rescue -- often about 1-2 year olds that the previous owners never bothered to train, and then wonder why they are now out of control.

When I adopted my guy from the HS there were several other dobes there who weren't on petfinder or listed on the HS website. Just be persistent and leave your contact information and I'm sure you will hear back from someone soon. County animal control shelters (high volume kill shelters esp.) are good places to look/ leave your contact info.
