| What do you think? Hi, I'm mot sure if this is the right area to post this, but anyway here goes.
We lost our dear Dragon about 5 weeks ago and have just stopped bouts of crying but we still think of him frequently each day and he will be with us forever. Anyway we have always been suporters of our local Doberman reacue organisation, but have never had the occasion to be rescue parents.
Today, out of the blue,we received a call from the Chairperson of our rescue club to let us know that they had a desperate call from a woman who needs a good home for her 5yr old bitch due to she and her husband divorcing and moving to an no pup place,
So the pup is " a sweet animal , subserveint, but VERY SHY. lives in a home with several hunting hounds and can hold her own when necessary...shy around strangers, very suspicious of small children etc. "
I'm pretty sure we will be adopting this pup when we see her this weekend, but where does one start to get rid of the shyness and then to top all of this off, we plan to adopt a puppy dog next spring...
I guess we are just needomg help and advice.
Thanks for reading this rather rambling post. |

| I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is, each one is so special and dear to you.
What do you mean by adopting a puppy dog next spring? Are you adopting another pup? Do you know this for sure?
In the 5yr olds case, if she can be evaluated by your rescue, and they determine that she is placeable and your home would be best, then by all means go for it. You are going to need to give her time. If you meet the owners, ask them why she is so shy. Lack of socialization is probably a main point. Slowly work her into your home. Be calm and confident with her. If you are nervous and baby her it will re-inforce her fear and shyness. Just let her come of her shell in her time and she will hopefully get better. I am not saying she will ever become a strong dominant female I just mean she wont be so shy. Re-inforce good confident behaviors, and give her some obediance. This will help boost her mindset and then get her out in the world and let her meet new people and things. Again, take it slow and she will come around.

| It just depends on the individual dog and their new environment and trainer how much they will come around. I think if you decide to keep her it should be with the knowledge that you are aquiring a doberman that does not have a very good temperament, whether genetically or as a product of her environment, and you need to be aware of that and be willing to accept and deal with that as she may never have a great temperament. I don't think it should be sugar coated as there are indeed dogs out there that have bad temperaments, some are able to be dealt with, and a few aren't. If you are willing to accept that and you really love her and want to keep her after you meet her instead of aquiring a dog/puppy with a solid temperament then I say go for it and help her out and bless you for rescuing.

| So sorry to hear about your beloved Dobe...... When I got Senta she seemed to be very shy about some things. To this day she hates loud noises, vaccumn cleaner, etc.... I started out taking her to more public places and let people pet her etc.. this seemed to get over alot of the shyness.. I put her in obedience, which gave her alot of confidence... She got her CDX and made me very proud of her.
If you adopt this other dobe, I am sure you can work things out with her. I agree with bleh60.. it will take time, but she will come around.. |

| So sorry to hear about your loss. It really hit me because my doberman's name is Drago. He is named after the draconis (dragon) constellation in the sky. Good luck at getting the rescue. You have gotten great advice already. In the end you will have to decide if she meets your needs. Don't feel like you need to rush your decision either. There are plenty of rescue dogs to choose from. Good luck and keep us posted.
Tracy and Drago.

| I am so very sorry to hear of Dragon's passing. Most of us have been in your shoes at one time or another. I know that it took me 2 years to even look at another dobie when my succumbed to Wobblers. I am glad that you are jumping right back in. Julie said it best, if after you know all the particulars of a personality and still want her, then go for it. Best of luck to you. Let us know what you ended up doing. I have 2 pups now and they are the best! |
