Looks like I won't be able to keep Athena...

Hi everyone,

It's been a long, long time since Amanda or I have posted on here. Unfortunately, this isn't an "I'm back!" post.

To keep a long story short, Amanda and I are divorcing, and in the process we have decided to sell the house. When we first started the process, the original idea was for her to take Athena and for me to take Gotham.

Well, it's time for me to move out of the house (Amanda has been out for a few months) and I was told by Amanda that she would not be able to take Athena. No apartments, etc would take two dobermans, so I can bring Gotham with me, but I cant bring Athena.

This is beyond heart breaking as Amanda and I love Athena dearly (as you can probably tell from our previous posts). We do not want to just turn her in to a shelter, and are not looking to just give her away on craigslist. We want to make sure she goes with a family that will take care of her, treat her right, etc.

I am more than willing to answer any questions anyone has about her, and am either looking for a family that can keep her or a place that can help me in placing her.

Please PM me if you have any questions, etc.

Athena didn't come from a rep. breeder. So, I can't get a hold of them...and I don't think I'd really want to anyway. :-/

I'd contact a rescue in your area for help in placing her. They've got much more experience in screening homes.

I've emailed/called a couple of NC based rescues and am waiting to hear back from them. I can't even put to words how disappointed and upset I am that it's come to this.

I can only imagine. Important thing is you are doing right by Athena. That's what separates you from rednecks. and sorry you are going through what you are going through.

Oh man... (seriously, why are all the gorgeous red girls I've seen on the wrong coast? The SO said I had the "look" in my eyes when I saw that gorgeous red girl in ATL who would only be adopted out to residents near atlanta...). How old is Athena?

Didn't Amanda's father breed this litter, Travis? Can she not talk to him?

Also, here's a suggestion, based on what you posted--and correct me if I read it wrong--it sounds like you are allowed *one* Doberman, but not two, where you are going to live, right?

And Gotham has a perfect safety net, in Ali (Old Drum), right?

So, why not let Gotham have his "safe place to fall" and *you or Amanda* be Athena's safe place to fall?

If that's not possible, then I would have to agree that placing her with a reputable rescue would be a good option.

Just as you guys, at the time, never pictured you'd be rehoming her, the next person you try to find for her...might end up the same way. A rescue could provide lifetime support and take her back if that happens.

Do you know about Pilots-n-Paws?

I happen to have an "In" with them, just sayin'.

I also have access to a nationwide trucking company that has helped with a few transport trains, but obviously that ends up being a much more time-consuming process.

And Travis, though I feel I "know" and like, Mangujowa, from her postings on this board, just another caveat--only adopt Athena out to a person, any person--no matter if you think you know them or not, whom you've thoroughly screened, and checked references and vet records on, and use a contract, if you choose to rehome her yourself--I can send you one if you can't get one thru a local rescue.

I completely agree with this--I was actually quite disheartened by my local shelter. They didn't really care about who adopted the dogs, as long as they thought the dogs were adoptable. There was no fact checking or background checking going on. It was like, do you own property? Cool. Do you have any prior experience with dogs? Okay. I might even go so far as to make sure that the adopter can financially deal with a Doberman--it's not a cheap breed even when they're healthy. It makes me really sad when I hear someone say that they didn't go to the vet or turned down diagnostics or treatment for something because it was "too expensive".

The first part of RFR's post has a lot of logic, though. It would be great if both of them could live with you, but either a rescue or a breeder would be better at keeping/adopting out a dog as they have so much more experience with doing so and know what to watch out for.

Gotham came from a reputable breeder and has a place to go if needed Athena has no one, I'm sure Amanda would take her if she could but it looks like it an issue with her unable to find a place of her own and her family won't let her bring Athena. I guess I don't understand why you couldn't keep both or at least try to reason with the landlord- explain the situation. Also as was stated - if there's a will there's a way...if a dog could be transported from barrie ontario to best friends in utah, then surely a dog can be transported from one coast to another.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I know if I ever had to find a new home for Shanoa (who also came from a BYB) I would choose a reputable Doberman Rescue.

Is there a reason you could not return Gotham to his breeder as RFR suggested? That seems like the best solution to ensure both dogs have the best situation possible.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the support and advice!

I've been in contact with a couple of long standing DT members that have showed some interest in either taking Athena in or helping me find a good home for her.

I considered giving Gotham to Ali and then taking Athena, however to be brutally honest, Gotham has been my "rock" throughout this whole ordeal and I couldn't imagine giving him away to anyone else. Athena was very much "Amanda's Dog" and Gotham was "my dog" when we were together.

I thought long and hard (and have spoken to Ali a couple of times) about the situation and I feel that this would best for everyone involved.

RFR, yes, Amanda's father was the "breeder". However, she hasn't spoken to him in a while, etc.

As for the issue with Amanda not being able to take Athena; yes, she has not found a place to move since moving in with her parents this past September. Her parents won't let her keep Athena since they already have a few dogs. We had planned that she would take Athena (when either she moved or I moved, whichever happened first) and I would take Gotham. When I found a place that would let me take Gotham, Amanda let me know that she wouldn't be able to take Athena.

It took me 3 months to find a place that would accept Gotham and that wasn't an hour plus drive to my job. I just found out a couple of weeks ago that Amanda couldn't take Athena (after I signed the lease), and I have to be out of my house at the end of the month so I don't really have time to look for other places.

I really appreciate everyone who has contacted me and offered their assistance.

Hope you find a good home for her.

I haven't been here for awhile either, but I drop by every now and then to "lurk". ( I can't help it; I no longer have a Dobe of my own so I admire everyone else's pics).

Anyway, I just wanted to say sorry about your situation, and I hope you guys find a good home for Athena.

Travis...hope you are able to place Athena in a great home.

I understand it must be frustrating in that Amanda's father bred her, Amanda brought her home, raised her.....and now they can't take Athena in? Is Amanda also looking for a great home, etc or has all this just been dumped on you? It seems mind boggling that the dog really is more theirs than yours and no one is helping poor Athena find a future home?

Keep us in the loop...and I do agree it would be way better to place her with rescue rather than with "a friend of a friend of a friend."

Ellenm...confusing situation, eh?

Amanda's father and mother have been divorced for some years; she lives with her mom and her moms husband.

I'm the only one looking for a home for Athena, however, I told Amanda I could look and she didn't have to. Honestly, EVERYONE told me from the beginning that she wasn't going to take Athena but I chose to believe otherwise.

Yes, the dogs have definitely been more "mine" than hers throughout everything...but I'm not going to get into that right now. All that matters to me is that Athena finds a place where she is going to be taken care of and where she will be happy.

Oh gosh, what a painful decision and circumstance. I just can't imagine it but I know it's a reality for a lot of people....I wish someone on DT could foster Athena for a while until you could take her back. Too bad you do not live here, our apartment complex is doberman friendly and you can have multiple pets!

I remember Gotham, I hope you will continue to be a part of DT.

Hello Travis, I PMd you about Athena. Just wondering if you got my PM, please let me know.

I am very interested in giving her a wonderful home, and as I said in my PM can provide vet and personal references.

Hey Travis, how goes it? Any updates on the search for a home for Athena?

Hey everyone. Just an update...I'm meeting up with a member of this board and his family on Saturday. We're meeting halfway in Virginia, and they'll most likely take Athena with them.

I don't want to jinx anything, so I'm not going to throw any names out there. But I believe they will make a fantastic family for Athena and I couldn't be any happier knowing that she's probably going to end up going to a good home.
