| Spike - Male Doberman X - VA My friend's husband has a dog named Spike that he needs to find a home for. He and his wife are going to move into a townhouse that only allows one dog. My friend's husband owns Spike's mom, a female Doberman named Pandy (his dad is a labrador retriever/rhodesian ridgeback mix). He has been looking for a home for Spike for a LONG time and if Spike doesn't find a home soon he will be going to the animal shelter. (They have had some interest, but no takers )
Spike is very sweet, good with dogs and cats, good with people. Spike hasn't had much experience with small kids, and I think the best for him would be if he was in a home with kids 10+ since Spike is a big, silly boy (I think about 90lbs) who might knock little kids over.
Spike is mostly housetrained, is taught to stay off the furniture, but the only command he really knows is "sit". Spike also likes to dig holes and jump short fences. I think this is due to the fact that Spike's owner does not excercise or train him, just leaves him alone most of the time. (Spike is not hyper spastic or anything though, he is actually quite calm. He does not jump up on people.).With an owner that will work on his training, and actually give him exercise, Spike will be a GREAT dog!
Spike is neutered and up to date on shots.

| While I can understand you wanting to help your friend find a home for Spike and this seems like a logical place to do so, Its not the best way to do it here or on the internet. You really need to contact your local doberman rescue or dog rescue. They are best suited into finding a home and matching him up with the right person. There are way too many risks for Spike that he may not end up in the proper home he needs.

| Spike looks like an adorable sweetheart and deserves a good home. Check in your area via internet and maybe you can find a doberman rescue. Even if you are far away sometimes they will transport dogs to and from rescues. Extra effort should be made for Spike as he would make someone a very good companion. You can just see it in his eyes.
I applaude your effort to help Spike, but don't try to give him away on the internet. Too many bad things can happen to him that way. Go with doberman rescue. |

| The rescues here don't take owner give ups(well, rarely anyway), and I have him listed with the all-breed rescue I am affiliated with. I know about the dangers of the Internet and Spike won't be given to just anybody. At lot of the people in rescue are pretty jaded to the "moving" thing and won't help you much.
Oh yeah, I just emailed Blue Ridge Doberman Rescue and also Doberman Assistance, Rescue and Education, the two dobe rescues in my area.

| I can see where the rescue would chew Spikes' owner a new b@#!h*&^. It looks like it would be well deserved, but this is not Spikes' fault and he should not suffer because of poor parenting.
Good luck and I hope a rescue will help find him a home. |

Good luck and I hope a rescue will help find him a home. | You know what, don't judge. My friend's husband has been looking for a new home for Spike for at least a YEAR. This wasn't an all of a sudden "we're moving dog must go". And my friend just emailed me and told me that her husband took Spike to the shelter. So nevermind. |

| IMHO, Doberman rescues (I volunteer with one, regularly) will not turn away a Dobe in need, no matter the circumstances. If they have a kennel (like we do) and have fosters with room, we will take them regardless. (we even take a few cross breeds here and ther, room permitting) Maybe they did not have room for some reason or another???? I figure since Spike is not a purebred Dobe is why the rescue wouldn't take him. If your friends husband had been trying for a year to place him, I can't see the dobe rescue turning him away for sooo long if he even tried that route before you suggested. Sounds like the poor guy was always second fiddle and didn't get the love and training he deserved.
He let his Doberman female have pups by a lab/ridgeback? Or was this someones elses doing?
Nuff said.
My motto is....."Don't get any kind of pet, unless you intend on petting them until life's end."
Hard lesson learned.

Hard lesson learned. | Yes. Then he bred his bitch to somebody's purebred male to make money off the pups, but he didn't make much. Then, the last pup to be given away mated with his momma (this one was an oops) and she had another litter. Half of that litter died, and the surviving pups have all been given to friends. He keeps saying he's going to get his bitch spayed, but I don't know when he's going do do that. But like I said, he's not an evil person, just stupid. (My other friends all thought my friend could do better, but love is blind.) |
