Question How to estimate rescue dog's age?

We will probably be getting another rescue soon as my sick 7-yr old Dobie girl doesn't have much time.

How does one reliably estimate the age of an adult dog? I can tell the young ones and the seniors of course, but what about those ranging from 3 to 6 yrs old? At the rescues I've visited, there is such a disparity in some of the dogs' condition that I wonder how a rescue can really state the a stray is 2, 3, or 4? I'm leery of getting a dog 5 or older, but am not ruling it out entirely.

If I should post this in another section, let me know.

Thanks!

I was wondering though, it there's anything specific to Dobes?

Based on the teeth description my dog would appear to be much longer than she really is so I guess the 3 to 6 yr range can be a crapshoot.

so hard to guess any dogs age.

I rescued a DoberGirl a few years ago, from the teeth they guessed 3 or 4 years of age. But, as soon as I saw her I knew she was older, just because I have owned quite a few Dobergirls over the years and you sorta get to know how they age.

She was heavy in the loin, soft topline and had a wisdom in her eyes that could only come from years of living. Her feet were starting to flatten, a little grey in the muzzle, etc.

But unless they were registered, there is no way of knowing for sure how old they really are.

Can you post some pictures of your Heidi?

And may I say.....Bless you for bringing a rescue Doberman into your heart and home!!

Rescues are the BEST!!!

Thank you for these articles! Wow, from this I think Audrey must be at least 6 - her teeth are worn. But the shelter said she was 2-3 (two year ago) and the vet said more like 3 (also two years ago). They were probably being kind. She could have been 5 or 6 then and maybe is 7 or 8 now? Don't know.

Her muzzle is just starting to get some white. I have noticed that in the past few months she doesn't feel much like running....but she still likes to walk and sometimes trot....but mainly walk a lot.
