| | Lil Pup | Opinions on my Dobe Hi Guys,
I have an European line Doberman who will be turning 1 year on the 3rd of March. I have lots of people telling me that he needs to develop his chest more. I would like some advice as to how I can do this. He has crazy energy and I exercise him by throwing the ball for him for about half an hour. I have included a pic of him taken at one of the shows recently. It was a very hot day so he's not as alert as he should be but for now this is the most recent pic I have of him.
Please let me know what you think. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Oh and I am a first time dobe owner :-) |

| Handsome red boy! I agree with what others have said about his chest is lacking. I don't think it is something that can be developed though through exercise. It may drop a bit as he ages, but I think it will be something that never is perfect. |

| Honestly I wouldn't freak just yet. Some dobe lines, like my Hero's, mature more slowly. At first he didn't have much of a chest. But now, I don't think he's lacking. Check with your breeder. He/she should be able to tell you if any of his parents were late bloomers themselves. |

| To me he looks like he doesn't have much chest on show because he is straight in the front. There's nothing you can do about this, it's his conformation He might get more chest as he grows up, but I doubt it will ever be big. |

I own the sire to my Vizsla puppy. he has a great front and a really nice chest. her front is not as nice as his and therefore her chest is also not as nice as his. it's impossible for her to have the amount of chest he has by structure.

| You really can't do anything to develop his chest, it will be what it will be. As long as he is healthy and given good nutrition, he will develop according to his genetics. Some dogs mature much slower than others, so it may take some time before he gets his "full" figure, at not even a year yet he still has plenty of time to fill out.
That said, I highly doubt he will become a big chested dog, he is lacking in forechest (the placement & angle of his shoulders contributes to this), which doesn't change with age for the most part. He can certainly gain more width and rib spring, and may fill out between the elbows some; all of which may come with some maturity.
ETA: While he is at a nice weight and looks good, sometimes carrying a little more weight will give the appearance of more chest (for show purposes), but it depends on the dog. Some dogs you can put a couple pounds (a pound or 2 can make a difference) on and it is carried on the front of the chest and between the elbows, sort of a "fat pack". With other dogs, that weight immediately goes to their stomach or makes them look fat and pudgy. You have to learn where they carry their "extra" weight.

| At not quite a year, he has a long ways to go and I would not necessarily make a decision based on what he is now. The picture is not a good side picture but is at an angle which makes it hard to see angulation. His chest needs to drop and it still may.... hard to know. Try getting a total side picture of him so that we can see angulation better.....
wish it was hot here!!

| Well look @the bright side- he doesn't have boobs - so many today have them :/
He's a baby & still growing- don't rush anything by trying to stuff him or going the forced exercising route. |

| My girls didnt really start showing a pronounced chest until after a year, closer to 18 months old, Bella took a little longer than that before her chest developed fully, she just turned 2 and is still working on it lol.

| Hi there! Hope you are enjoying this lovely breed as a first time owner.
Just got to see for a euro bred dobe he has lovely rear angulation and he isn't too heavy, he is nice. Now he is only a baby, and that chest may drop, the angle of the photo isn't great to judge but his front angulation looks a little straight. One of my girls just turned two and finally has forechest, my other is 1.6 years and barely has any, not sure if she will have much but she is balanced so she can still move properly.
What were the sire and dam like? as a pup did he have much forechest, people say that they end up looking like a bigger version of what they were like as pups.
In Australia there is a huge emphasis made on having "puppy champions" there are a lot of dogs that obtain their title at 10 months because they have pretty much grown up completely. I don't know why everyone is in the mindset of producing puppy champs and finishing so early, I like watching my dogs go through and come out of the "uglies" its taught me more about the breed. Each to their own but enjoy your dogs journey, you might wake up one day when he is older and wonder where your flat chested baby has gone! |
