Won't pee in the rain!

I discovered something new with Willow yesterday: she won't pee if it's raining. I can get her outside, but she will just sit on the patio steps and wait to be let back in.

It's still raining today and she hasn't peed since last night (been about 13 hours since she last eliminated), so I'm trying to come up with a solution to get her do her business in spite of the moisture. So far I've been taking her out on a leash every hour or two for about 5-10 minutes, and then putting her back in her crate when we come back inside. (I don't want her wandering freely around the house with what must be a painfully full bladder because I don't quite trust her not to just urinate somewhere.)

Anyone have any suggestions?

I tried that last night. I think I was out there for a good half hour, but she just stood near me and sniffed a bit, and periodically tried to head back toward the door.

Today is worse because it's just barely above freezing (or was the last time we were out) and quite windy, so it's absolutely miserable out there. 10 minutes of that is about all I can handle.

I had a puppy owner that would take a HUGE golf umbrella out and Hold it OVER the the puppy so it would go potty in the rain. NOT over them just the dog. LOL Still makes me smile when I think about them doing that.

I always put Parker on a leash and outwaited him, too. If you give up, they win and it's more than likely going to make it more difficult to outlast them on down the road.

I have this same problem too!!

And can someone explain the difference between rain and a sprinkler - 'cuz Perrin LOVES to play in the sprinkler but has a pissy-fit when I make him go out in the rain...

None of mine like going in the rain, but they all know they don't get to come inside until they've been

Alas, I don't even own an umbrella for myself, let alone the dogs.

On a positive note, I took Willow out to pee right after my last post and she finally went. Only took about 15 minutes of the two of us freezing our tails off.

It's supposed to get back down to freezing this afternoon (in the 20s Fahrenheit), which means snow rather than rain, so she should be more comfortable going out for the remainder of the day. In fact, the rest of the week is supposed to be the teens and 20s as daytime highs.

Won't pee in the rain!

What is really shocking? Is finding a Doberman that will go out in the rain and pee, lol. I have had five, and every one of them can't stand to go out in the rain. I have had to take them on leash and walk for blocks before they will finally go. Now Huck hasn't been that bad, but he hasn't been here for spring yet. But Calamity is the worse, she won't go no matter what you do. Her and I will be soaking wet on leash and she still refuses to go. Now we just leave the door open if its been about 12 hours and its raining and she will go on her own and boy does she do the zoomies when she comes back in!

Here's the strange thing - when she was still going to the park, if it started raining, didn't faze her a bit. She would run around in the mud, roll in it, bite up at the rain, go figure.

Willow is definitely an odd character. It's only liquid water that she has a problem with; ice and snow are just fine, but she will hop over or walk completely around puddles. I suppose I should have seen the aversion to rain situation coming.

Also, Willow won't stop to pee or poop on walks. Ever. I could have her out for two or three hours (which I do in warmer weather), and she won't go. She'll hold it until we get home.

Our boy is that way on walks. Calamity marks a lot on walks, but Huck won't do anything.

Calamity also is a princess with puddles...actually in the last several months she won't even step into the yard, she pees and poops on the patio or walkway. But at the park she is pure tomboy-butch!

Mine learned that the longer they take to pee, the longer they have to stay out in the rain. I waited them out as well. Wheeler was so bad that I literally took a beach chair and an umbrella out with me and sat in the chair, under the umbrella and waited him out! He didn't come to live here until he was 9 months and his breeder has a covered and partially (3 sides) enclosed area, just off the house for them to do their business in inclement weather. Here, doggies have to rough it.

Lola, I just never gave her an opportunity to decide whether or not she was gonna do her business in the rain. I told her to "go potty" and we didn't come inside until she went. She learned real quick. Now, they go out do their business and dash back in.

The only time they mind the rain or wind or..... is if they have to go out. But, take them to the beach, park or for a walk... they don't mind rain, snow, wind, hurricanes, monsoons, sleet......

I always waited out Fiona on leash, too. She'll go in light rain now, no problem. If it's raining very heavily though, she steps just her rear off the back porch (it's covered) so she can squat in the grass and only her butt gets rained on. LOL

The first time BF saw her do it he looked at me and said, "You've gotta be kidding me!" I was like, "I don't care how she pees in the rain, as long as she's not peeing on the porch or inside the house!"

I need to buy a good quality camcorder of some sort. I can't take video worth a crap on my phone right now. I'll try to remember to video it when I buy a good one (which will hopefully be soon so I can better record agility trials!).

doggy diapers if it is really bad. I to have to stand in the rain if it is cold for my baby to go out side. She is not as bad in the summers.

Elka always eliminates on-leash (actually, it's been very exciting; sometimes now we can just turn her loose out back and she'll pee immediately and come back). If it's raining, though, she gives me the "abused Doberman" look and is a statue at perfect heel. So I say "too bad" and we go back in almost immediately. No play, no treats, no toys. We'll try again in an hour or so, on my say-so, not her asking, and frequently she'll go then.

I don't want to stand in the freaking rain >.>

One of the advantages of showing dogs is that they all learn to pee and poop in any weather and anywhere.

One of the ways to train this behavior is to take them out first thing in the morning well dressed for whatever the weather is--raingear if it's raining and warm clothing if it's snowing so that at least you will be comfortable. Most dogs will pee, at least pretty quickly in the morning and even as young puppies no one comes int without producing at least a token puddle or pile.

The last thing I want to do is spend hours walking a dog who thinks it has to go home to go potty--particularly after a day at a dog show--I've already had all the exercise I need by evening.

Wow! I am soooo lucky that my girl will go out and pee no matter what! When the ground is really wet, she does have a wtf look on her face and she will raise her paws and takes funny steps, but at least she goes.

Scarlet despised anything wet, too. I got her as a rescue when she was about 6, so I didn't do the leash thing to send her potty. I taught her what "go potty" means and then she did it on command. But when it rained she did not want to be "kicked out" in the yard to go. She would stay by the patio door to try and be let back in. When I told her go potty often enough, she'd run out and take a few steps in the grass, then turn around and come back to the door. Trying to trick me. Then eventually she'd go.

...First time my Amy was a puppy, our son pee's in the toilet and our furbaby squats & peed on the bathroom floor, right beside him.
- she was only doing, what she was learning, from her big brother teacher...LOL

I find many dobes don't like to pee in the rain, unless Mom or Dad gets very wet & we talk it up a lot...praise & constant talking <3.
- luckly our puppy now, pees quickly in like 20-30 seconds (almost every time)

Yeah, apparently our housemate at the time tried that with Elka at least once (I don't necessarily think he was doing it as a motivator, I think we were gaming and the other 2 bathrooms were full). But, uh, suffice to say he was more than a little alarmed when Miss Elka decided to lunge off in a different direction than he was...um..pointing He never even told us about it until more recently (maybe the last house party we had, in May?)
