"Dobermans turn on their owners the most"

UGH. I cannot stand when someone tries to say that yet they have no actual evidence of documentation. And if there is, shame on me but am I crazy to disagree without substantial documentation to be proven wrong?

A friend of mine was telling another mutual friend about my foster doberman and how sweet she is. The woman (who is the owner of a pitbull) then tells my friend how dobermans are FAR more vicious then pitbulls, that pitbulls have the bad rap and it's really the dobes who are the vicious breed. She then stated that "dobermans signifigantly turn on their owners the most" while she was bad mouthing the breed.

With that said, may I please have some feedback? I love pitbulls and dobermans but where is the evidence to this tall tale?

Thanks everyone in advance.

LOL!! I dont think you will find much..if any! I mean, the Doberman is the breed specifically designed to PROTECT its handler. The love and loyalty of the Doberman is legendary, and from my experience, unmatched.

Certainly it happens but the circumstances have to be mostly abuse related or psychological malformation in the dog - but that applies to ANY breed.

That's what I thought...and that's what specifically makes me angry. I just cannot stand how people bad mouth the breed for no reason!

I did read an article however about Doberman agression trends of about 35-40 years ago and prior. The article described that the breed in general had tendencies for smaller skulls. This would sometimes result in the brain continuing to grow and the skull staying the same size. This created pressure on their brain and would cause aggressive behavior and sometimes all out insanity. Apparently there was a move in the breeding community to fix this and the problem was more or less removed. But this was decades ago. Anybody have more info on this?

Oh wait! I have another good one. My boss asked me before if they turn on their owners because he's "heard that their brains are so small". If you could have only seen the expression I had on my face after he said that LOL.

I asked my vet about this specifically. She told me dobes were by far one of the best pets for kids and that her father- in-law (the owner of the vet clinic who has over 50 years experience) always has a dobe. She said in her experience cocker spaniels are the worst dogs with kids.

My mother is terrified of my new baby. She even called yesterday and asked if we were all still alive. All Lacy does is sniff and is so timid she doesn't even hold her head up, and my mother says "get her away from me!" I have only heard the dog bark at my neighbor's dog, and we were outside and he barked first!!!

I heard this too and my vet said basically the same you did- its basically nonexistant anymore. She said just stay away from dobes who have been severely inbred.

I was bitten by a boxer years ago, and I actually still have a part of my calf that is numb from it- and my scars are visible. My head knows its not the breed, etc. but I am still irrationally scared of them. But, I would never discourage anyone from having one- I just start breathing rapidly and break out in a sweat if one gets near me.

There is none. There is plenty of evidence though that the people that say these moronic things are 100% completely ignorant.

Some of the stories I hear about the places the Rescue Dobermans come from make me wish there was something to this myth.

SOME *owners* need to be turned on.

Why not have a bit of random curiosity? I was hoping someone would google it and find it in a place such as snopes.com LOL

Avalon, there have been decades where people choose a breed and the same myth comes out about them. I've heard it about pit bulls before also hearing it about the doberman.

I will say that I have 3 small kids and had 1 doberman before any of my kids, got my second when I was 2 months pregnant and my third before my youngest was 5. I could chose between many, many breeds or mixes. Why do I choose a doberman? Because I trust them. I know them and I know that aside from the common bumps and bruises to be expected with 3 young active kids and a young active puppy, that my dogs would never intentionally hurt my babies. I don't have that trust with other breeds. If I did I would have brought home a dog I fell in love with at the Humane Society months ago, that still needs a home.

BTW--When I first started seeing our vet almost 20 years ago they had rescue dobermans, a baby and a toddler. They still have dobermans though the children are in college.

Because some of us dont know everything, but thanks anyway.
Nobody does, but I'm amazed that a doberman owner would even wonder about that moronic old wives tale. It's as stupid as the brains-growing-too-big-for-their-skull thing.

Well, Im a doberman owner and Im not stupid and have put hundreds of hours of research into my dog because I love him. So its an old wives tale...okay...but that is twice in one day that people have been rude and condescending when I am here trying to help and learn and have fun as a new member in a respected online community.

My mother is terrified of my new baby. She even called yesterday and asked if we were all still alive. All Lacy does is sniff and is so timid she doesn't even hold her head up, and my mother says "get her away from me!" I have only heard the dog bark at my neighbor's dog, and we were outside and he barked first!!!
my mom was terrified when I told her that I was getting Lexx. Now when she calls the order of speaking is thus:

"how's my grandpuppy" "has he learned any new tricks" " give him a hug for me" "how's Kyle's business".... oh! and how are you???
