| Lucy & Gidget Update I've been meaning to do an update thread on Lucy and Gidget for a few weeks... Lucy will be 3 1/2 in a few weeks and Gidget will be 19 weeks old tomorrow. Boy where does the time go?!!
They are both doing great. I'm keeping so busy working with both of them and trying not to get overwhelmed with it, since I am trying to juggle training in multiple venues/areas and make sure I put a good foundation on Gidget while she is young.
They are getting along super well, although Lucy can still be a bit rough in her play style so I have to really monitor them closely when they are playing. Although Gidget is kind of a "bring it on!" girl and is one tough cookie. Sometimes I think she is the instigator! Nonetheless, I want to ensure they don't get too crazy.
Lucy headed out this morning with her handler for a show that starts tomorrow. I have to work today and tomorrow but will head up Sat AM. So, Gidget gets a little one-on-one time for a couple days. And maybe we will get lucky and Lucy will pick up a major this weekend.
I've been really happy with Gidget's drive and attitude - she is a super happy puppy, outgoing, and has a good amount of energy but also has an off switch. She's been a pretty easy puppy and a great family addition and sister for Lucy.
Here's some recent pics of my girls.
Lucy hanging out in the backyard
Showing at Indio a couple weeks ago
Sunbathing - one of her favorite past times
And my fuzzy little "crookedy blaze girl", who has gone from this
To this, in just a couple months! Her white blaze has significantly faded and no longer goes over the top of her head
Iz going to pounce on you Mom!
Practicing playing show dog
She loves sitting on the leather ottoman - nice and cool!
Sisters!

| Okay, forgive my ignorance but I had no idea Lucy was so stunning. I thought she was nice before but I guess I'd had never seen stacked pictures. She has a wonderful head too. Miss Gidget is looking good too, beautiful aussie pup! What you said about their playing is the way it is here too. Pup starts it they place nice for a bit until Eli gets too excited and then he can do the doberman bam slam play and that is too much for Seb. He tries though. LOL LOL. I have the boys you have the girls. I too feel somewhat overwhelmed with the two. I haven't gotten Eli out for therapy work because the pup has classes on the weekends and he has one during the week in the evening too. I'm trying to get him used to everything also except he hasn't been in the ring but I have been doing some practice handling class. We start beginning agility Feb 9 and I'm super excited about that. Right I guess Eli is getting the short end of the stick but since he is 4 and not a show dog nor a competiton dog in any way he can hang. Still, I need to get him to the nursing home that loves him. The kicker is working full time and then finding a few times in that day to practice with pup so I get up super early and I work him out in the back with the patio lights on at night. |

Also, I think I've only seen a handful of Lucy pictures in the past. She is beautiful!! I've always thought that, but she looks especially pretty in some of these. And I love the one of her sun bathing. My crew is jealous. They want to live somewhere where they can bask in the sun for more than a few months a year haha.
Gidget is adorable and sounds wonderful, too. :-)

| The both look wonderful. Gidget looks like she is coming along nicely. Love her ear set and expression. Round top skulls and houndy ears got rather prevalent in some lines for awhile anyway, and I hated it! She is going to do well when she gets into the ring.

Cali is a great place to live, but I loved NJ too and do miss it. We seem to move so often, I try to take the attitude of home is where you make it. Quote:

The marking on the chest, in order to show, it shouldn't be there other than above the front legs? (If that made any sense) | Thank you! Sorry, but I am not entirely clear on your question. I think you are referring to the rust patches on the chest? Here is what the breed standard says in terms of markings: Rust, sharply defined, appearing above each eye and on muzzle, throat and forechest, on all legs and feet, and below tail. White patch on chest, not exceeding ½ square inch, permissible."
Some dobes have larger chest markings and some smaller, where they are barely visible; and some are deeper rust and some lighter. So there is definitely some variation out there. But they should not have markings other than those noted in the breed standard. Hope that helps! Quote:

I think Lucy's head is probably her best feature. It's funny though because her head is so delicate and small that some people think she is still a puppy sometimes. LOL. OK, yes she is on the small side of standard at about 24.5" but she is no puppy anymore, even though she still acts like one at times. LOL
Oh boy, I bet you can definitely related with Eli and Seb to what I am dealing with! Lucy is just crazy with her boxing and other antics! I hope she gets to play with one of her handler's dogs today and tomorrow because poor Gidget can only take so much! LOL. I suppose in another month or so it will be better. Too bad we don't live closer and Seb and Gidget could play and Eli and Lucy could play too! You sound super busy too with everything Seb is doing. It's hard to juggle everything, huh?! At least it is for me. I have to really figure out what Lucy enjoys too - I am not sure she is really a huge fan of obedience. And I don't want to push her in areas that she is not really having fun. She loves to show but I am sure we would not special her, assuming she someday finishes. Maybe she will get more passionate about agility. I am anxious to hear how things go with Sebastian's agility and showing!! Quote:

I feel like we got really lucky with her temperament. And yes, I love to compare baby pics to now! I was really surprised how much that blaze changed too, but a friend of mine warned me it would probably not stay as bold as it originally was. Quote:

Gidget is adorable and sounds wonderful, too. :-) | Thank you! It sounds like you and I both got really lucky with our Aussie pups. Having good breeders is worth so much. It sounds like you are super happy with Journey's breeder and Journey is a super sweet girl, and is beautiful to boot. Yes, we are a bit spoiled with the weather here. I'm actually from the Pacific NW originally, which is very grey and rainy, so I absolutely love the weather here. Although I miss the 4 seasons we had on the east coast. It was in the 30's at night here in Southern Cal recently though and all my local friends were freaking out and canceling training classes since they are outdoors at night. LOL. I was pretty excited to get out all my winter coats, hats and scarves and be able to bundle up! And Lucy got to wear her winter coats for a change. Quote:

I really appreciate your inputs especially given all your Aussie experience! Gidget started to go through a bit of a strange growing spurt the last week where she was high in rear. Suddenly my husband and I were like "wow, when did that happen!" LOL. Her Stop seemed to flatten a little too but is coming back. I love her little expression too and her ears are coming along well. Although I will be anxious when her ears are all done - we are gluing (vs taping) them at the tips. I have no idea what is more common, but that is the method her breeder and our friend (also a breeder) use. It's a pain but I will not even begin to complain after having to post Lucy's ears for 8 months!
I am hoping to enter her in the 4-6 mo puppy class at an ASCA show soon so she can start to get more practice out there. She will be 6 months before we know it, and I love the fact that ASCA has those puppy classes! It will be fun to see how she does! Although thinking about it reminds me of all the show training I need to work on. We don't really have a good handling class near by so I am doing home schooling. Thanks again!

| High in the rear is pretty normal for these guys, she will go through a lot of changes but it all will come back and one day she will be "together". Wait until her coat changes, they really look frightful for awhile. LOL!
If you don't have any handling classes nearby, do what I do. Drop in at a local obedience class and while everyone else is working on obed, you just do the conformation thing. This gives experience with focusing with distractions and also offers opportunities for others to go over her, so she isn't bothered when the judges go over her.
Good luck and keep us posted.

| Love the pictures! Lucy sure is pretty! It must be her size that is holding her back. She is GORGEOUS!
Have you tried putting her with a shorter handler to make her appear bigger? Quite a few years ago my friend had a big male show dobe, and she is an average sized person so going into the ring accentuated his size, so they put a really tall handler on him and were able to finish him that way.
Gidget is cute as a button and still has that little impish expression, you just know she is plotting something LOL.

I used to wonder if Lucy's size was holding her back but I see smaller bitches out there and it doesn't necessarily hold them back. Lucy is singled out and has probably 5 or 6 Reserves to a Major so I probably shouldn't complain. When we lived on the east coast she had a different handler who was shorter, and is one of the best handlers in the country, but all of Lucy's points came from her current handler who we absolutely love (as does Lucy). Here's a pic of her in the line up (she is in middle) and I don't necessarily think she stands out as being tiny compared to her competition. I know this is a tough angle and kinda hard to see. I think we have just lived in some seriously competitive areas (NJ/NYC Metro area and LA) and there are tons of beautiful dogs and top handlers. And like all dogs, Lucy has her strengths and weaknesses, her pasterns probably being her weakest point. Her feet are not great either. She doesn't have a ton of bone, so the key is finding judges who love beautiful, feminine heads and are not looking for a big burly bitch. LOL. We also moved her from Open Black to Am Bred last year, as she often times did look much smaller/substantive than some of the open black bitches. I think most her points and reserves have come out of the Am Bred class.
Thanks for your comments about Gidg too. She's our little munchkin and is a lot of fun. And yes, she does have a little wild streak in her and can be a tad naughty sometimes.

| | Lil Dog | What cute sisters!
You're the second person on DT that I noticed that has aussies and dobes.
I'm picking up my dobe pup in less than a month, about the same time as my brother and his wife are picking up their aussie pup. I'm excited to see them grow up like Lucy and Gidget (Even though our pups won't be living together).
