| First Doberman Questions Hey everyone! I have been researching the doberman for the last couple years and I am planning on getting one soon. I loved my uncle's doberman when I was little and set since I've been hooked. I have a male chihuahua mix at home that likes other dogs and is convicted that he is the size of Great Dane i jist want a big boy to add to the family (we like the name Beau). I know that personality plays the largest role, but I am torn between getting a red or black? What do you guys think? I have read some of the other forums talking about how they act different based on color... Which have you noticed is more laid back?
Ps. Does anyone know any good breeders in/near Connecticut (for family not guard dog)?
Thank you so much! |

| Welcome, please do a forum search for same sex aggression. It's very common in this breed and many good breeders might not even sell to you since you already have a resident male dog. Reds tend to be really goofy....;p |

| Welcome to DT!
I side with ZeldaRules on that one. Reds are goof balls.
I love my red boy!

| Thank you so much for telling me, I thought that happened only in special cases but it would probably be better to get a female... Now here's the critical question: black or red? |

Other than that, I'd say let the breeder pick the puppy that they think would best suit you, especially since you seem to like both blacks and reds. *Yeah, I know about CDA and all, but I LOVE the color, and if I had a choice, with all other things being equal, between a black, a red, and a blue, I'd go for the blue.

| You could do what I did and get EXTREMELY LUCKY and go to a local humane society and find a beautiful healthy dobe!
Just look at this lil squishy face doberman, now tell me how someone could surrender this girl after almost a year of owning her after paying a wazoo of money from a reputable breeder?!?!!

Alright alright, I got way lucky here. I will say this though, its difficult to predict who will capture your heart and who you will form a bond with.
In my opinion, personality of the dogs will be key here. There is excellent knowledge, both from awesome members of this site and elsewhere, but you just never know. It sounds like you're being smart about this and the best of luck to you! Whatever you choose, I'm sure the dobe will be a great addition!! |

If it were me I would just let the breeder pick the best dog for me without worrying about color. Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

It boggles my mind what gems people discard, but hey, their loss is someone else's gain.
BTW blacks can be goofy too. |

| Black v Red. Hmmm let me think.
Nope can't make myself decide, to me colour takes a back seat when it comes to what dog I have. Health, character, temperament are what I go for, colour is just something that happens.
By the way I have a Red from European lines. Perhaps you need think about this more than colour, i.e. European v North American, Working lines or Show, even though you want only a pet.
oh and definitely go for a female I have 2 males and it is no fun living the crate and rotate lifestyle due to male on male aggression.
And please do look at rescue.
and last but not least. Welcome to the forum.

| My next dobie, I will look into rescue and hopefully find a blue female Wishful thinking, I know. But it is strange how things do turn out when you do the right thing .

| Color is personal preference.
I'd be more concerned about potential accidental injuries due to size difference in the dogs than I would be about SSA. Dobes can be pretty boisterous and Chi's are frail little dogs, relatively speaking.
Of the people I know who have Chi's and Dobes, the big dogs really don't spend a lot of time interacting with the littles because of chance of injury. Because of limited and controlled interactions anyway, I wouldn't think SSA would be much of an issue in reality. I know if I had a super little dog there's no chance I'd let them run around fancy-free with my Dobes just for fear of the little dog being stepped on or bumped/shoved over or knocked off the sofa, etc. Chances of them interacting enough for SSA to be a problem is nil. It would be in my house anyway.
I'd pick a good breeder and discuss your expectations with them. A good breeder won't point you in the wrong direction with the pup you'll bring home.
ETA...Tallysyn and Tiburon are both in Connecticut.
Here's the DPCA Breeder Referral page: DPCA | Breeder Referral

| | Lil Dog | I agree with what everyone is saying, I'm getting my first dobe very soon and my breeder and I spent a lot time talking about SSA and the right match for me.
I personally like the black dobes more (physically speaking) and it is my first dobe ever so I can't speak about their personalities, etc.
Good luck! Oh and Welcome from another newbie! |
