Skoll will go out of his way to suck on and lick my ear. He likes to "clean" my entire face but he'll actively go after my ear just to nibble it. It doesn't hurt but I've never had a dog do this before. The one gsd would suck on my fingers but nowhere else. Normal?

I've seen mabel do this to hannah and she "tries" to do it to me and an old coworker she loved. I attribute it to a love and submission thing. I wouldn't let it get to out of hand though

Bruce likes to go for our ears too (and not in that crazy puppy biting way lol). He licks them, and what he would do after I don't know because we redirect him. He is very gentle about it, so I have always associated it with him showing love.

Picture just for you 5 minutes after Skoll discovered he's allowed on the couch.

Yeah, it's not rough or anything, in reality it's very gentle and loving, but it tickles something fierce and I've NEVER had a dog suck on my ear like that.

That's too funny My boy Legend used to suck on my ear lobe when I was taking him out to go potty every few hours as a puppy. I would hold him over my shoulder like a baby on the way outside and he'd start suckling away lol. It was so cute. He quit doing it after awhile.

Ivan doesn't suck on my ear lobe or anything, but he does like to try and clean my ears. Not of fan of dog slobber in the ear even if it's well intentioned.

He cleans my ears out too, but I'm used to Baby the pit doing that all the time as well as "cleaning" my face.

It's not just the earlobes though that's one of the major spots. Any part of my ears that stick out away from my head is a prime target for sucking/nibbling. I started turning a certain way so he wouldn't reach, he started approaching me a different way in order to do it.

He is a very licky dog though, perhaps that's part of it. He'll lick any exposed skin, and if he can't reach exposed skin then he'll sit there licking my jeans or sleeves instead, and he'll do it until you tell him to go away. I think it's adorable so I just let him, I've got no qualms with slobber on me, but it's very different from what I'm used to.

He just has more love than he knows what to do with, I think.

I really don't like to be licked so I discourage it in any form. My fawn dog would love to be allowed to lick various parts of me--but settles for getting to dry his tongue out and gently blot me after we've been training and I've turned him loose for the day.

I can deal with that.

My folks inherited a failed red male show Dobe from one of my friends years ago. I dropped by their house one afternoon--my mother was sitting at the the kitchen table drinking coffee and thumbing through a magazine. Polivan (the Dobe) was under the table licking my mom's ankle. 15 minutes later he was still licking her ankle.

I said, "Doesn't him licking you like that drive you crazy?"

She said, "Yeah, but he likes it so I put up with it."

My mother...the soft touch. I was still living at home when I got my first Dobe--my stepfather who had lived with a Dobes in the past was stoked--my mom was out of town when I brought the puppy and his newly cropped ears home--when she got home two days later she walked in (obviously irritated) and remarked, "I HEAR you got a DOBERMAN!"

The Doberman in question came out from under the table and ran over to her--he promptly banged his scabby ear against her leg and yelped. So much for my mother being royally irked about the Doberman I brought home. Four years later she was putting up with the endless licking of a Dobe because it made him happy.

My boy like to "thoroughly" clean ears.. dogs, cats, people.. he doesn't care who. It's very gentle (though I worry about him getting my earrings undone and swallowing them, so I don't let him do it much).
If left to his own devices, he could lick the insides of my terriers' ears for hours.

My dobeson Sampson has an ear fetish. He is constantly smelling and cleaning his sisters ears, my ears, my houseguests ears. I think he was an ear doctor in a previous life.

I've never had a Dobe do it but two of my Vs do it. I always make sure my earrings are still on afterwards

Sabrina cleans, licks and nibbles my husband's ears. He says it feels gross but he lets her anyway. Our schnauzer cleans Sabrina's ears all the time.

I think his obsession with licking her ears started because she had a retained ear stitch from her cropping and that's how we discovered it.

I think its the oils their after/salty taste. Mine will lick to no avail as well, but if I'm fresh out of the shower, the licks are very short and almost non existent.

Same with a little sweat (gross). After lifting weights, my guy always goes for my forehead and behind my ears.
