| Rise in Dobe AKC registrations The AKC is reporting a rise in Dobe registrations - up to #13 in 2011 from #14 in 2010 and from #24 in 2001. Anyone have any idea what is driving this movement? An increase in Dobe popularity, or a decline in the popularity of other breeds? AKC Dog Registration Statistics
I shudder to think what this means for rescues. |

| Maybe our breed is getting more popular because people want a protection dog? The rise looks like it started after September 11, 2001. And let's face it, because fear sells in the news, it doesn't surprise me that Dobermans might start being more in demand for people who want a dog they think will protect them. GSDs and Rotties are both still in the top 10 too.
If numbers keep going up, we'll be as bad off as the Lab, Golden, pit bull, and hound rescues. They're slammed, all the time, because of the sheer numbers of dogs. And BYBs who want to cash in on a breed's popularity by churning out puppies are going to go up.
I swear, being in the top 10 most popular AKC breeds is one of the worst things that can happen to a dog breed. I hope Doberman popularity takes a dip soon. |

| I am thinking that is is because Dobermans are like chips you just can't have one.

Only a few days ago I was looking at stats for the number of dogs registered each year from 1980 to last year and the numbers had dropped from 79K to 9K per year over those 3 decades - but I cannot for the life of me find where I was reading that. Sorry. If someone could find it and share that would be terrific. It also included the number of litters registered p.a.

| Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Up, Resident Evil, and other movies certainly play a large roll even if the Dobes are the bad guys in the movies.
The number of people that watch Westminster on TV seems to be increasing too. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if the breeds that do well in that show as well as the one broadcast on Thanksgiving increases popularity with the general public as well. I hope they start to fall out of favor again...

| | Terriorist tamer | Yeah its weird huh what's the magical "right" number for a breed? I quite like that the doberman is reasonably uncommon here, the BYB to decent breeder ratio is not as bad as it would seem in the states, and not as bad as in more popular breeds here. I just wish we had even one working breeder here... Someone with working dobes move to NZ please??
