| How does your dobie act when your are sick? Today I learned something new about Deacon, and he surprised me yet again. I had a minor surgical procedure this morning and am not getting around good. I have been sick since I've gotten Deacon 8 months ago, but never had something like this. My pit bull is apparently my "sick dog" lol...she cuddles everytime I'm sick but this is a different situation.
You have to understand Deacon to get how impressed I am. He is typical velcro dog, of course, and once he figures out where I'm going in the house he tends to race ahead so he can beat me to the next room, and he can be a big goofball with me which isn't good in this situation. Well since I've gotten home today, he has not left his post at my feet other than to eat, quick potty breaks, or to come check on me with a very gentle nudge. If I get up, he follows slowly next to me so I can kind of hold on to him to help me balance. He is turning out to be a great care taker lol!
What are your stories of how your doggies "take care of you" when you aren't feeling well? It amazes me how they know something isn't right and they know just what to do with you.

| Well first off, Elka alerts my migraines in time for me to medicate, or at least mitigate. If I do actually have a headache, or am sick in other ways, she's super cuddly. Sometimes that isn't so great, as Elka's love is not a gentle one, but she's very solicitous and doesn't want to leave me at all. |

| Ginger, that's truly amazing, and I'm sure a big help & relief to you!!! I didn't realize they could detect a migraine coming on, but it doesn't surprise me since they detect seizures, cancer, and all kinds of other medical problems. I know a person with a seizure detection dog, and his stories of what the dog does for his wife are truly remarkable as is your story with Elka...they are definitely special pups!!!

| Thor is actually my service dog. He helps me get up from the floor for example, provides stabilization and an extra touch point when I walk without my cane since I can't feel the bottom of my feet which throws my balance off and if I close my eyes without touching something I fall over (no officer I'm not drunk I just have MS lol). Some days I walk better than others and he adjust to how much I need him without prompting. He also acts quite differently when I have a really bad migraine day. Unfortunately alerting me to an oncoming migraine is not one of his talents, but when I have a really bad day he will not move from my side at all and be extremely gentle, however if I feel better the next day but I'm too lazy to do anything he will perform a tap dance on top of me to get me to move. I hope you feel better soon and whatever you had done heals ok.

| Wow, Deacon has nothing on Thor! Thor sounds like a truly amazing dog; I love watching service dogs and have always been interested in the training techniques that you have to do with them. It is remarkable how they flip the switch from work to play then back to work as soon as needed. Did you get Thor for the purpose of having a service dog or did he take on that job on his own?
Thanks for the well wishes. Recovery sucks, but the procedure should help my health in the long run so I will gladly take the week of pain! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App

| Actually this story gets even better because I adopted Thor from a rescue. He was an owner surrender, can you believe that. Some people really should get a lawn ornament instead of a dog. I would have adopted him no matter what. However the trainer I was working with while I was in the process of looking at dobe rescues has experience training service dogs and told me that if we find the right dog we can train him. I didn't know that that is possible but I looked up the law on it just to be sure. Thor is registered as a service dog with the county certified and carries a special lifetime dog license. I never wanted to take a service dog from a program away from somebody who might need him more than I do, but to be able to rescue a dog AND get a service dog is truly a blessing.

| This is where Prime stayed when i was recovering from my surgery. Well, he wasn't allowed near me for a week since I was in a ton of pain from a laparotomy, but I couldn't stand being in the same house but away from him so I snuck him in my room before then. He didn't get up for anything. This was also a twin bed. |

| Here is a picture of Thor in his work clothes but I only put the vest on him when we go out. I have since wrapped the straps with Moleskin to prevent chafing

| Thor's story is really incredible, and he's a great testimony for rescue dobies! You helped him in the beginning and he now returns the favor. Great pic of him too!
Zelda and Dobe, great pics of your boys watching out for their momma's when your sick. I was having a hard time not letting anybody up to lay by me! My mom & hubby are strict caretakers who weren't letting me do anything (which included letting my furbabies lay by me out of fear they would hurt me), so when he goes to work and before my mom comes back over, all 3 will have had some bed or couch time lol! | I would say Atlas isn't a very well rounded nurse.
I broke my arm at the mx track 6 weeks ago (chipped the tip of the ulna and multiple fractures on the radius near my wrist) and had surgery (Ti plate to hold it all togethrr) to repair it 5 weeks ago. If he's cuddly he will lay at my feet but if I even think about ruffhousing... He does the paw slap thing and usually ends up hitting my broken arm. Probably my own fault...
Things are on the mend, Iv started PT but it's still super sore when my hand articulates too much.
The full speed, tag the hand as I zoom by drive-bys aren't fun either.
Here's a couple pics |

| Ivan's nursing skills could use a little work. He'll stay nearby, which is nice, but does his normal canon ball drop on top of me to lay down and chews his bones so ferociously it's like my bed is in the middle of an earthquake with the bouncing and shaking. And I'm surprised he has any teeth left based on how loud his chewing is. And just like Thor, as soon as I start to feel better Ivan is all over me about doing something fun. "Now? Now? Now? Now?" |

| Red doesn't do anything different when I'm sick. He is completely oblivious to anything that doesn't directly affect him lol (typical guy )
My cats, on the other hand, will be super clingy and stick by me when I'm sick. My Tonkinese literally never left my side when I was so sick for like 2 months straight with horrible morning (all day) sickness. You couldn't peel him off me.

I've heard and read that Tonkinese are really great cats. It was one of the cat breeds I was checking into before I realized how allergic I am to cats! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App

| And now that my house is free from my strict care takers (for a little while), Deacon is allowed to come lay by his momma. Don't now what it is about having your dog cuddling next to you, but it sure does make me feel a lot better already! Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App
