| Heeeee's hoooooome!
Sucky pics, sorry, was more focused on the dog than the phone taking pictures. Skoll is home, safe and sound, after a VERY long day for everyone involved. I had a 11 hour drive turn into a 14 hour drive because of delays on both sides, he had to sit through both halves, and his foster mama ended up getting VERY lost in the States. Luckily everyone is home safe and happy.
Left at 6:30am, got there at noon, waited for foster mama to reorient herself because she took a wrong turn and was about 2 hours out of the way, discovered that my driver's car needed a new tire and were held up again until about 4pm, and arrived home at 10pm after a few pit stops when Skoll insisted he had to pee RIGHT NOW. A short walk, another potty, and dinner... and now he's VERY put out in his crate.
He's supposed to be crate trained and it shows a bit, but he does scream. It stops after a minute or so except for the occasional whimper, which I'm grateful for. He also barked at Saffron even though he passed the cat test with flying colors (completely ignored them). I'm hoping it's just new-home jitteryness. Better pics to come in the morning!

| Yippee! Glad everything turned out okay as far as the trip. Hopefully, after a few days, Skoll will have settled in, and that him barking at Saffron is just the fact that he's in a new place, and has had a stressful day.

| Ugh, I feel your pain...it's so stressful trying to hook up in strange places....
My last girl was supposed to be crate trained, and she barked up a storm.....until she was comfortable. She is definitely crate trained. They just need some time to adjust.
Welcome to Skoll.. |

| Welcome Skol.
Just a quick question, what type of harness is he in, I don't mean to offend but it looks as if it is on backwards. Might be just me, being a silly Brit not understanding the make so hope you don't mind me making this observation.
He looks a beauty by the way. |

Congrats on a super handsome Skoll! Do you have a previous post that tells his story, like how you found him etc.? I must have misssed it. Anyway, congrats!
| I do have one, here: Interesting Development...
A quick rundown of what happened, though, is that my friend from another forum knew I was looking for a dog and had interest in dobermans. She saw him posted on one of her pitty forums and sent the link to me. I'd been holding off because I wanted a puppy from a breeder and those are more effort than I can give right now, but a calm adult that just needs to be taught manners is a lot less stressful to me so I jumped on the opportunity.
I'm his 4th home; first was a truck cab, second a small 1br apartment, third a horse farm. He was bred by someone in the Oshawa area going by the kennel name EuroDobes. His foster mama said they are well known in the area for being a terrible breeder. While on the horse farm he was subjected to some rather archaic... and barbaric imo... training methods. Things like wrapping a choke or prong collar around his muzzle and yanking whenever he stepped out of heel or reacted to anything on a leash, turning the shock collar up all the way and holding in the button even after he gave up whatever he stole, purposely stomping on his feet to get him back into heel, etc.
He retaliated 3 times, 3rd ending with an inhibited bite that did draw blood, that was the shock collar after he gave up the nail file he'd taken. He apparently hid behind their other dog (male mastiff) and they went after him anyway still holding the button and got popped on the hand. They were going to put him down due to being "overly aggressive" and "not listening" but someone at the vet clinic saw something about the situation wasn't right and convinced them to turn him over to her instead.
She's had him tested by a behaviorist and hired a trainer to work with him in the meantime. He's not HA or DA, he's a bit wary of new situations and people but he's already leaning against me for love and has been goofy and likes to bring me toys to show me before wandering off and wiggling with them.
He is a VERY quiet dog. Outside of barking at the cat and screaming in his crate, he doesn't make very much noise. He's also very calm, not hyper at all. Not sure if it's the stress or his personality, time will tell. The vet clinic and the ones in his past medical records did note that he was a very quiet dog especially for a young doberman. He is however very VERY food motivated... and a little sharky in taking the treats. He's also a little thinner than I like for a dog. I can see the last 3 or 4 ribs along with his spine very easily and I can't feel any fatty or muscle cushion on the rest of his ribs. I prefer a hint of spine and the last 1 or 2 ribs so probably another 2-5lbs will have him looking better. He's currently 95# now at 2yrs 7mos, haven't checked height.
He is reported to having some issues guarding super high value items like rawhides and raw bones. I have not seen it, the trainer did not see it, the foster mama only saw it once and that was the day before I got him. Soft growl that seemed to surprise him as much as it did them when a coworker touched his head while he had a rawhide. I don't intend on giving him rawhides but I do have some raw bones for him that are intended to be a supervised in-crate only item. We shall see.

He's a little itchy but first I want to switch him off of the Science Diet and onto the EVO I got before I go looking for another clue. Oh, and he's got an adorable little cowlick on his neck! | He looks great! I think he might be a little heavy if anything - not skinny at all. His butt is very well covered. With dobes, you should not have rolls around the neck that are heavy but that is probably due to shoulder placement rather than overweight. You should be able to clearly see the last 2 ribs - I don't see that we can clearly see the last 5 ribs as you suggested, even with him turning away from the camera which exaggerates the rib outline. He looks very good to me - I certainly would not put any weight on him. He may need some more exercise to tone up muscles etc.
I think you have a real winner there, especially if he continues with the character and temperament development with positive rewards as you described.
CONGRATULATIONS - HE'S A WINNER IMO!!!
BTW: the dog in my signature (Cato) with the natural ears was a rescue. He went thru the local pound twice, went thru rescue a couple of times and was a very destructive dog when I got him. He killed chickens and had enormous prey drive. I got him in 2000 at 18-24 mths of age. He passed last year in June at estimated 13 1/2 yrs. He was a terrific boy and I was so happy to have him (even though at times when he was killing my chickens I wanted him gone - but I know I get reactive to things). He was great dog and I wondered why anyone would give him up, let alone the 3 prior owners (probably killed cats or other pets is my guess?) - he was listed as having separation anxiety, destructive and being nippy when excited (never saw that...).

He looks a beauty by the way. | If the question wasn't assessed before- I didn't check.
It is an Easy-Walk harness by Premier. It is supposed to be like that. Harnesses that clip to the back do nothing to stop a pupping dog. This harness pulls a yanking dog to the side to avert the pupping behavior.
I use one of these for Rou. I love it. I feel like it is a good alternative to a prong collar.

| Congrats, Jazi, on your new handsome boy.
Bless you for committing to giving him a better life.
I ditto Viv's remarks about his weight.
I'd concentrate on better food and toning him up with lots of exercise--which will be a great bonding experience for the two of you, as well.
Also, head haltis are generally not recommended for Dobermans, with their propensity for neck issues anyway. I'd stick to the Easy Walk, and plenty of re-training.
Thank you so much for helping him live a life he deserves. I wish you two much happiness.

It's a great name for a beautiful Doberman. He looks fantastic, and will only get better with some decent food and fair people to live with. One of my Logan's homes thought a good way of disciplining a dog was to hit him with a broom, a magazine, or come up behind him and dig your hands into the soft areas on his flanks. Not surprisingly, it took him a while to get over being shy about people approaching him from that direction. He was also a very, very quiet dog, but he was a real love sponge once he settled in.
Can't wait to see more pics of Skoll! |
