| Is there a particular reason for long dog names? Could I give my rescue one? Please, if it isn't too much trouble, educate me on long dog names.
For example: Trinity Vanessa's Abagail "Abby".
Is it usually only those registered or from good blood lines?
Would it be ridiculous to give my rescue a longer name?
I'm really liking Axel Irjaria's Rose (Irjaria is my full name, its American Indian and pronounced are-jair-uh)
Thanks so much! |

Thanks so much! | I thoughts he was a boy
Personally I don't like long names unless it counts for something.. *Kennel name/lineage name* *name* but hey it's your dog! Who's to say?
Axel would be a good short name |

| I think that you're looking at registered names? It's a way to tell different dogs apart in the registry. The names usually include kennel name and then the rest is USUALLY based on a theme for the litter. My boy, Dreizehn, for example is Rhapsody's Mystery of the Spanish Chest. Rhapsody is his breeder's kennel name that she puts at the beginning of all her dog's registered names and then the last part is his name from the litter theme (Agatha Christie mysteries).
I know there is a PAL registry that the AKC has for dogs without papers - I think that's what it is. Chances are your rescue boy may already be registered with a name. If you have access to his papers that's where you'd want to look.

Thanks so much! | Long name that the OP meant is the registered name on the pedigree certificate? "Abby" is the call name (CN).
In my case, Elza is the call name and her registered name is "Anam of Mie Crown House". What does Anam mean?? At least I must thank to the breeder not to name her "Atom".
"Anam" sounds embarrassing but cannot help as this was decided by the breeder. That's why there is a call name.
Anyway, OP, you can name your dog anything you want!

| You can give your rescue pretty much any name you want. If you are going to apply for a PAL from the AKC, however, you cannot include a registered kennel name. Also, it would be awkward at best if you included a well-known (but not registered) kennel name. There are a few other restrictions, but, other than that, the sky's the limit.
I have two dogs listed with the Canine Partners program. One is listed as "Lucky Rat Dog", which is what we've always called him. The other is "Ilka Of Pear ORchard Cemetery". Hmmmm, maybe you can figure out where I found her?
As soon as I get my GSD puppy spayed, I will be applying for her PAL. Let's see, I found her in the parking lot of a landromat (known as a washateria down here).... my clothes were in a Speed Queen washing machine when I scooped her up, and I named her Leontine.... Aha! "Speed Queen Leontine Von Washateria" is the name going on the application.
ETA: I knew there had been a recent thread about a PAL name. PAL registration name idea help

| Both of my girls came from back yard breeders, but had AKC papers, and I wanted to give them themed names to a point. When we got Nexus her name was chosen before she was even chosen (long story there) and on her paperwork there was a name, one word, and we didnt like it. I debated quite a while on what to name her, I wanted it to flow, so I decided on Starlight's Fiery Nexus. When we got Bella, again the breeder did not require a kennel name (thankfully) so we tried to stay with the Starlight portion. She was supposed to be Starlight's Red Skye at Night (red girl, I thought it was cute) but the family was adamant on NOT calling her Skye She went from being Zoey (how do you fit Starlight in with that?) to Chloe to Bella, which in turn was lengthened to Isabella Shines by Starlight.
I know byb dogs dont really need fancy registered names but I wanted to give them nice names. Most of the time they are my Nexie and Boo, or whatever else I think of to call them, usually Boo-boo or poop face (Bella cause she used to eat her poop) and Spaz!

| I got Ivan through rescue. Luckily I got his AKC papers too, so I was able to register him with a name of my choosing.
I am completely okay with breeder's having their kennel name in front, but I've never liked the idea that some breeders' pick themes for their litter and control the entire registered name.
I like the dog's name to be a reflection of himself/herself - in Ivan's case that he's training to be a SAR dog. I like that his registered name not only reflects that, but the fact he is a rescue.
Had he been named after some breeder's favorite candy bar or their favorite video game or whatever would have been a shame. To me, and once again only my opinion, it makes the breeder seem greedy/controlling. |

| The long names are usually for dogs that do or plan on competing either in sports like agility, being therapy dogs, confirmation show rings , CGC, or other that earn titles but nyone can get a registered name. Ammo has a PAL registry bc he is a rescue(& he has his CGC , canine good citizen, title and plays around with obedience and nosework (a sport where they sniff things out)

| | Alpha | Get a PAL and go crazy! I love Rosemary's names.
My girl Mac (rescue also) is MC252 Macondo Distaster.
No reason rescues can't have fancy names too! |

| You could re-name him whatever you would like, after all, it is your dog. I think a lot of people on here have re-named their dogs, using their name as the kennel name.
Brandy's breeder handled everything to do with naming, which was good because I had no knowledge in the matter, but I am pretty sure her full name is Gentry's Brandy Alexander. I am actually quite curious what her litter theme was I really like how the kennel has their name in front, and that they pick the litter theme. I think it makes it look more formal, and I am sure my breeder picked something way classier than I would have picked! |

I know the Deliverance thing was addressed in another thread. It has horrible connotations for those of us who saw the movie.... |
