Why is it that people look at us like we're crazy?

Hi everyone,

My hubby and I are looking into getting a Doberman puppy next year. We originally found a breeder, but luckily, after coming to this website, you guys pointed out that the breeder we originally found is not an ethical/reputable breeder, so we managed to get our deposit back, and are now looking into getting a Rhapsody Doberman. Anyway, I never in a million years imagined that we will get such a backlash from our friends ( even some very close friends ) over choosing this bread. Whenever we tell someone that we're planning on getting a Doberman puppy they tell us "You guys are crazy, they're so dangerous" or "they will turn on your toddler/yourselves", or "they're so unstable etc".

Here is an interesting scenario. I know many people, and have at least 100 friends on facebook that are dog enthusiasts, just like we are. Anyway, whenever I post something, like a status/photo etc, I usually get many "likes". I posted a picture of these two beautiful Dobermans, and said that that's the bread we will be getting, and not only did I get two likes in total, I got attacked via facebook/private messages for our breed choice.

Why are Dobermans so misunderstood? To be honest with you, I am shocked with the amount of backlash we are getting from our friends. That will not change our opinion about Dobermans, I just wish that the breed itself isn't so misunderstood. Thank you for listening!!!

there used to be a LOT of bad publicity out there about the breed...and people assume they're killers, their brains will outgrow their skulls, they're just meant to be junkyard dogs, and similarly bad things.

honestly, the best way to change their minds is to get a dog, raise it right, and possibly give it a "job" like agility or something else that gives them tons of exercise and makes them think. give these people a reason to eat their words. we have, and i can't tell you how many people have changed their tune about the breed after meeting our boy.

Good grief - a SUCCESS story!!!! After the BYB Support Groups coming out in full force this week, this is just music to my ears! (and my sense of reason)

Congratulations, first off, on your choice of breeders and your upcoming puppy. Irina is an incredible breeder and one that I was so close to purchasing from. You will not go wrong purchasing your pup from Rhapsody!

As for the stereotypes, yeah you're going to have to develop thick skin. For a slew of unfair reasons, the Doberman is a very misjudged breed. Even after you get your puppy you will get an onslaught of unsolicited opinions about him/her, the ears, the tail, the whatever - it's annoying so just role with the punches.

I did my research ahead of time as I have kiddos and encountered the same freaked out reactions to my breed of choice. I looked up aggressive dog breeds, researched which were most responsible for attacks and attacks with fatalities. Dobes were always either far down the list (way after completely "acceptable" breeds like goldens, labs, boxers, etc.) or not on the list at all in the past 20 years.

Now honestly, those lists should be taken with a grain of salt because they don't take into account what kind of owner said dog had - which is most of the problem with ill behaved or aggressive dogs to begin with. But at least you'll have some kind of "stat" to throw out in a discussion.

And be committed to training your pup. Perhaps look into getting their CGC (Canine Good Citizen) training, that's an actual title that's really obtainable and will help shut up any who question your pups behavior.

You'll be fine, just know the opinions will come and help your pup be the best ambassador for the breed they can be.

There are a lot of ignorant people in the world. Let it be encouragement to make sure your future Doberman is a polite member of society through proper breeding, care, socialization, and training.

My father had the same opinion when I told him I was getting a doberman, our first dobie was loved very much by my father after got to know Baron and the others have charmed him as well. Once your friends and relatives get to know this wonderful breed they will change their opinions. As for dobies and children, if raised with them it is an awesome thing to watch. Our Baron would sit at the window and wait for our grandson to come when I told him Jonnie is coming, and vocalize so much that your ears would hurt. Hang in there.

Silas has been a "converter" for many of my friends, and even more strangers, regarding this breed. I can't tell you how many times we are out working as a therapy team and I have people that are surprised that a Doberman is doing it. It's tough, but you need to let it go for now, and just use it as ammo to make your dog a wonderful breed representative.

Dobermans were overbred in the 70s, so quite a few people have actually seen aggressive (or maybe just protective) Dobermans in their lives. Then of course there's the media - they are almost always the bad, scary, junkyard dog. Even in animated movies!

I like to tell people that they're similar to German Shepherds - most people have met "mean" or aggressive GSDs in their lifetime, but then there are those who are wonderful, solid family dogs. It's just easier for people to be more open to the GSDs - in my experience owning one - because they're seen as police dogs, and then of course there's Rin Tin Tin.

Pit bull owners, especially in current times, are going through the same thing. It'll always be there, unfortunately, because there will always be idiots. (And just a loooot of naivete even without idiocy.)

Edited to add - and there will always be macho idiots that own dogs in these stereotyped breeds because of their rep. They don't care for them well, chain them up, don't socialize them well, buy from crappy BYBs and this is many times what people see. Not well-bred, socialized, well-trained dogs. Dobermans are also tough puppies and sometimes even with the average owner, (especially when bred with the wrong temperament) when raised poorly or inappropriately they can definitely be high-strung, aggressive, and/or out-of-control.

It is so nice to occasionally hear that we aren't always beating our head against a wall.

As for your friends, there isn't really anything you can do to change their minds until you have your doberman and they get to know him/her. Welcome to one of the breeds with a negative stereotype. I have never let it bother me since I don't care one way or the other if people approve of my breed choice. I don't agree with a lot of others choice of breeds that really DON'T match their lifestyle, but it's their choice, not mine. If your friends persist just tell them it's not their choice to make, and that their continuing negativity on the subject is unappreciated and damaging to your friendship.

You may have a lot of friends who are dog enthusiasts, but they are breed illiterate. Actually anyone who knows breeds well as a whole knows that our breeds bad reputation is laughable.

I pretty much consider it a blessing that the geneal public doesn't know how great the Doberman breed is. They are the best kept doggy secret

Congrats on your upcoming puppy! Dreizehn, owned by PatchworkRobot, is a great HANDSOME dog. His sire, Gentry, also a very handsome boy. I don't think you went wrong with this breeder choice

Just let the puppy prove everyone wrong they will swallow their pride and tell you that they were wrong.

In my experience, as with many other people here (bean mentioned it) your dog will convert people form fearing to loving the breed. Dreizehn has done this with so many - it's astounding. But yes, thick skin is a must. Even after you get your dog people will be saying things to you (mostly about the ears). I was called a horrible person and an animal abuser more than once. Just remember that he's your dog and you probably will be caring for him much better than those people do for their dogs.

I got that from coworkers and family members when I first mentioned that I wanted a doberman, and then again when I told them I was rescuing. Even my parents and sister, who have had GSDs and currently have a chow mix and a pit bull, all three of them are "don't blame the breed" people, and their first reaction when I said that I wanted a dobe to be my first "me" dog? "Don't those go crazy because their brain outgrows their skull?" "Aren't they really dangerous?" "Jasmine it'll eat the cat!"

I can't wait for the general city folk's reaction to his ears, since he's cropped and docked. Oh boy. I grew my thick skin years ago since I was in charge of walking the GSDs, chow mix, and pit bull. You'll need it.

I agree with a lot of what's been posted by others. When we told our family we were getting a Doberman, my mom was the quickest to react by dis-owning me. Said that the dog will eat my un-born child and I will lose all of my friends...REALLY?!?!

Fast forward several months later, my mom calls to ask how Duke is doing all the time and is his biggest fan. People will stereotype because they are ignorant. Over time, your friends will learn that their fears are irrational and something that doesn't pertain to your pup at all.

Good luck, very excited for you about your new family member!

they are special kept secret, to have one, is to have one have you. I have heard every comment and now i can only say i am sorry you feel that way and i have never had...that experience. The ones that try and fail at raising a Doberman are the worst, its always the dog and never themselves these are the one that really kill me!!

Let's talk about stereotyping this way. One day, I was walking all three of my dogs, a Standard Rattie, a mutt, and my (then) four month old GSD puppy. Well, someone commented on how much they just loved GSDs, and what wonderful dogs they were, etc, etc, etc. I replied that while I like GSDs, and was glad I had rescued her, I really wanted a Doberman. Well, his eyes bugged out and he said "They're dangerous!". I told him that NOTHING was more dangerous than a spoiled rotten Chihuahua, and went on my way.

Before I got my first Doberman, I already had one of the most hated breed at this time, a pit bull. So by the time my dobie came around, my family and friends had nothing left to say since my pitty had already proven them wrong lol.
All of my dogs, even the little 20# dog are obedience trained, have great manners and people skills, and were very well socialized from day 1 and I believe that this is what helped people, mainly my close family members, get over the stereotypes. My so called "mean, scary looking dogs" have changed the minds of many people...one who literally said she would never come around a large dog with a bad reputation after being attacked when she was younger, and she now adores my dogs.
You definitely have to have thick skin, be willing to brush people's comments off, and work hard to prove them wrong and show them what a true Doberman really is. Trust me, they are worth it though and it is a great feeling when you finally break through to somebody. :-)

When I told people I was replacing my dachshund (she lived to 16 and was nicknamed "evil dog") with a doberman rescue, people looked at me rather odd. They said "Don't they have very different personalities?" I replied "Yes! The doberman is affectionate , trainable and cares about what you think and not totally evil like the dachshund!"

I got some of the same reactions. My family are dog people, so they didn't mind my breed of choice, though they still think (rightfully) that I'm a little obsessed.

My MIL was scared of Thor at first. She heard stories about him, but didn't meet him until after he was full grown. She was a little dog person, and was really intimidated by his size. At her first visit she fell in love with him, and on her second visit, she fell in love with Trinket and the puppy we were watching. She even wanted to steal the puppy and take her home as her souvenir. Now she is a Dobe lover, and asks how her grand-dogs are doing.

Just ignore them. Get puppy, love it, socialize it. The smart people will convert to Dobe lovers, and the dog will intimidate those who can't see what a great dog you have.

I didnt bother to tell anyone save my husband and son I was getting a Doberman, even they had reservations.
I told them it wasn't open to discussion but if they felt so strongly then they could go away, do some research and when they had done so I would be willing to listen to what they had to say.

Toby came into our family almost 2 years to the day ago.

Bigotry is a very hard thing to overcome.

If you train your Dobe to the best of your ability to be a well behaved little man or girl, if you do not allow the negative comments to get to you, eventually you will hear far more positive.

Honestly I have had folk jump into the road to avoid Toby, throw themselves into doorways and literally run a mile.
However, occasionally I have met people whilst out walking who have stopped to speak to me, whilst I never let them touch Toby, (he is fear reactive) they are all impressed that he sits beside me and waits patiently and have actually said that he is beautiful and not what they expected.
Whilst to some this isn't a great deal, for the locals hereabouts it is a real change of heart.

Our goal is to change folks minds, one person at a time. Eventually we hope to change their view of Dobes and to show them they are a wonderful breed of dog and not the baby eating zombified hell dog the media has all too often portrayed them to be.

Don't let what folk say get to you, they are not worth bothering with.

Thank you so much for your encouragement guys. I definitely plan for my puppy to be the best ambassador that he can be for his breed. Hopefully, my friends/neighbors will change their minds about this wonderful breed.

I can't even imagine what they'll tell us when they see the cropped ears/docked tail...I bet they'll tell me that we're these horrible people/animal abusers...Anyway,I'm sure we'll survive..I just need to grow thicker skin so to speak.

Ask them why it is people can see cropped and docked mini schnauzers or min pins or a wide variety of other breeds, or docked cocker spaniels, but not bat an eye. Again, it's simply none if their business. And besides, the puppy came to you already done.

My husband and I were worried about this with Angus, but fortunately we've had nothing but good experiences so far - so hopefully you will too! A few of my friends were "weirded out" by the cropping and docking thing, but after raising their opinion once (and listening to mine) they haven't said a word since - and in fact, just laugh WITH us when our "reindeer" (Angus' ears are posting right now) is being silly.

I always make sure that I'm prepared though in case someone asks "Why a doberman.. aren't they mean?" If you look through this site, there are actually a few threads on this. It's always good to see what other people are saying to people (because it helps give you ideas for your own response).
Good luck

Most people unfortunately are very impressionable and they don't necessarily do any research at all before having an opinion or concept of something or have any real personal experience.

movies obviously don't help, they always use dobermans as "the bad guy" because they are very athletic and elegant looking dogs and obviously easy to train, what's funny to me is that people doesn't realize that these dogs are actors as much as Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt are, and you don't see people talking about how good of a secret agent AJ was after salt lol. So I find its ignorant and doble standard, but don't worry too much. Before I got Luna just a couple of friends were a bit shocked with my decision fo getting a doberman, they were all liike: but arent they vicious?, my mother in law too, she was a bit scared, well now those friends who used to be weary of dobermans have called me on weekends to ask me if they can come and spend some time with my dogs lol, and my mother in Law goes for a long walk with Luna every morning. So don't worry too much, they will change their minds after they meet your baby

Bean used to use black vetwrap on the ears and that way you don't get as many "what happened to his ears?" comments - lol.

Tiusa, firstly I'm so proud that you took the good advice you received here. Kudos to you. Really

I went through the exact same thing as you when we first announced to our family what kind of dog we were getting. We got everything from, "Why would you get such a vicious dog" to "so, are you guys planning to be in the Michigan Militia or something?". But we ignored them and went ahead with our decision anyway.

Let me tell you that our dog has COMPLETELY changed my whole family's opinion about this breed. Not only do they love him, but even my mother-in-law who generally hates all animals and would never allow them in her house, loves Red and she even asked if she could borrow him for a sleepover at her house one night! I think all of our mouths dropped open in disbelief that day.

It helps that Red has 1 Obedience title, 3 Rally titles, passed his CGC and is therapy certified by TDI. He's well-socialized, and listens better than any dog they've ever known. They all freely (and happily) admit they were wrong about what they said before

Nothing's better than proving people wrong, in a good way

oh and about the cropping/docking thing, my default answer was that he came from the breeder that way. No one could really argue that.
