My hubby and I are looking into getting a Doberman puppy next year. We originally found a breeder, but luckily, after coming to this website, you guys pointed out that the breeder we originally found is not an ethical/reputable breeder, so we managed to get our deposit back, and are now looking into getting a Rhapsody Doberman.
Good grief - a SUCCESS story!!!! After the BYB Support Groups coming out in full force this week, this is just music to my ears! (and my sense of reason)
Congratulations, first off, on your choice of breeders and your upcoming puppy. Irina is an incredible breeder and one that I was so close to purchasing from. You will not go wrong purchasing your pup from Rhapsody!
As for the stereotypes, yeah you're going to have to develop thick skin. For a slew of unfair reasons, the Doberman is a very misjudged breed. Even after you get your puppy you will get an onslaught of unsolicited opinions about him/her, the ears, the tail, the whatever - it's annoying so just role with the punches.
I did my research ahead of time as I have kiddos and encountered the same freaked out reactions to my breed of choice. I looked up aggressive dog breeds, researched which were most responsible for attacks and attacks with fatalities. Dobes were always either far down the list (way after completely "acceptable" breeds like goldens, labs, boxers, etc.) or not on the list at all in the past 20 years.
Now honestly, those lists should be taken with a grain of salt because they don't take into account what kind of owner said dog had - which is most of the problem with ill behaved or aggressive dogs to begin with. But at least you'll have some kind of "stat" to throw out in a discussion.
And be committed to training your pup. Perhaps look into getting their CGC (Canine Good Citizen) training, that's an actual title that's really obtainable and will help shut up any who question your pups behavior.
You'll be fine, just know the opinions will come and help your pup be the best ambassador for the breed they can be.
