| Do you think she is too skinny? I took Dish to the vet for her 6 month heartworm shot and a check up. The vet says that she is healthier than an ox. I'm concerned that she is too skinny though compared to most dobies. She is about 65lbs. Thoughts? |

| If the vet wasn't worried, it doesn't seem concerning. My adult male is only 71lbs.

| I don't see ribs or spine, so she's probably just a very lean, narrow dog. How tall is she?

| She doesn't look too skinny to me. So many people get caught up in the "numbers" rather than looking at what's healthy for their dog. My adult female is 65 pounds and in ideal condition.

| my older female is going to be 3 in a few months and only weighs 72 lbs, which the vet said is a perfect weight for her, so i wouldnt worry about your girls weight. If the vet saiys she is healthy then she should be fine.

| When we took Murphy in at 6 months he weighed 50 pounds. He's well below average, but looks healthy, not skinny at all.
Dobermen are lean dogs, she looks fine. |

Your pup looks fine to me.
I, personally, like to be able to see a faint outline of the last rib and like to be able to feel the ribs and spine. If you can see the spine, imo, the dog is too skinny.

| I just had Mocha at the vet and she weighs 66lbs and is standard height, not an ounce of fat on her. |

| | denormalized | No fat on the outside of a dog doesn't tell all the story. My grossly overweight male has little discernible external fat - except in one place.
Now I know he is very overweight - meds like pred and Keppra and KBr have caused this sudden gain in the last 12 months.
The big tell on him is that there is fat around his penis attachment to the abdomen. Whenever someone with a male says their dog is not fat, I check out the penis area and get a good feel - that tells me heaps.
All you can see externally on my boy is massive muscles rippling as he moves, outlines of his last 3 ribs but no spine or hipbones. His skin is <1/2" thick anywhere and over the ribs it is closer to 1/4" thick. He is at least 10lb overweight!! And it doesn't show in the normal sense - just beware and try to be honest with yourself and your dog. My boy weighs 75lb now (down from almost 78lb) and my goal is <65lb.
Internal (organ) fat is deadly.

| My boy weighed in at 70 pounds at his vet appointment this summer. My vet said he was in perfect condition. He recently lost 2 pounds and I feel like he's too skinny. 2 pounds less and he looks too ribby for my liking.
I get told all the time by my one aunt that my dog is too skinny. But when I look at his profile he looks great. A nice tuckup, and the last 2 ribs are visable. Hip bones are barely visable.
Your girl looks in great shape. Dobies are thin dogs compared to other breeds. |

So I like to tell it like it is. I read that section before I pressed "submit reply" and lol'ed too! You got to get a good grip on the area - for some reason, the dogs don't seem to mind. Honestly, right now, Yoda looks like a staffy with his muscling - not right. It is my opinion that he has good "marbling" of his muscles - lots of interwoven fat, not subcutaneous like on a lab.
Also, on bitches I look to see if they have "bags" when they sit - it is sort of like the equivalent of penis fat - fat tits.
I remember discussing this with my brother years and years ago - I referred to it as organ fat (the fat that attaches to the organs). Of course his 12 yr old mind couldn't stop laughing and to this day he asks me how my research into "organ fat" is doing ( he can barely spit it out for all the laughter). (My brother is way older than me - just for reference purposes.)

| Hi - numbers themselves are pretty meaningless without a lot of other info as well... her weight sounds fine, the first photo she looks really lean, the second pic she looks pretty normal... and at that age, as active and growing as they are, it's not at all uncommon for them to be lanky kids. She should be happy, active, growing, peeing and pooping... hard to be starving and have energy to burn or enough food for normal poops! And if you're concerned, then you're probably taking good care of her!
