| To the NON-croppers out there....... Keno is now a 11 month blue bundle of energy. When I take him out people ask, "What kind of dog is he" I say, "Blue Doberman" they ask, "Why didn't you get his ears done. He don't look like a Doberman. He's not a full breed, he's mixed with something." Which is a lie. I sometimes want to carry his AKC registration around with me. I think its because I didn't get his ears done but that was a personal choice. Ear cropping don't take away from his overall demenor, I just personally didn't think he needed to endure the pain of having his ears cut off just to LOOK a certain way.
How do you guys deal with the ignorant things peoples say?

| I know I'm not a 'non-cropper' but I want to share with you that people are so ignorant when it comes to dogs.
I have had multiple people tell me they are "so glad I didn't crop his ears."
Uhhhh.... I won't lie I'm always a little dumbfounded.
I attempt to be nice with everyone but at some point you just have to walk away.
Some people can be taught, some just want to stay ignorant forever.
Also, can you post pictures of your boy? I know many people would love to see more of him!
ETA: I've also been told that "dobermans can only come in black, there is not such thing as a brown doberman."

| I have one of each, adopted as adults-so-no choice on the crop issue here.
My girl has natural ears, and quite regularly, people say the same things:
Mixed with (X), part greyhound, why didn't you do the ears, so glad you didn't do the ears....and so on.
At this point (7 years of it with my girl) I just smile and nod most of the time. There is only so much explaining one cares to do. MOST people are fairly ignorant about MOST breeds of dogs if it is not "their" breed. I am guilty of that as well, I just don't know much about the vast majority of breeds. I, unlike many, would be willing to research BEFORE choosing or commenting/debating other breeds.
As far as the "endure the pain of having his ears cut off", well.... I will not go so far as to say it is pain free, but... I think it isn't as bad as it looks.
It is a personal choice/preference, some folks can't stand the look with natural ears, some can't stand the "thought" of cutting the ears.
I prefer the look of a good crop. I prefer to adopt dogs. I loose a little of the choice. To me, the personality/health of the dog is more important than the ear shape. When the time comes, I will choose the "right" dog for me based on the individual more so than the look.

| Although everyone asks me what kind of dog Monty is, mostly because he is a Red....I have yet to encounter a single person who asks WHY I didn't get his ears cropped. Every one always says....oh I love his ears, it's great you didn't crop him! When I had Petey, I got grief because he was cropped. I had people telling me to stop posting because it I was being mean to him. Do you think people see dobes differently because of where we live? There are not many Dobes in my area. Labs and Goldens are the number one dog breeds in my town. I can count on one hand how many I've seen a dobe in my town in the 24 years I've lived here, except when there was a UDC show here.

| I was contemplating a blue girl who was not going to be cropped for various reasons (mostly, she was a rescue, so we didn't really know her history that well). That being said, people are always shocked/disgusted when they hear how long it can take to post a Dobe's ears. Others are disgusted to hear that I bought from a breeder... People just can't be pleased, and I've decided there's no point in trying to please 'em!

| If someone said to me, "he don't look like a doberman" the grammar would be enough for me not to need to say a thing to that person. The problem isn't his ears, the problem is that he is a blue. I have blk and not person has ever said he wasn't a doberman. In fact I have only been asked a couple of times and he is almost 4. People don't know about breeds to begin with and you throw reds, blues and fawns at them, well, their brains explode with stupid. Who argues with someone about what kind of dog they have, that has never happened to me. If people ask they accept the answer, where you live people are stupid and rude! Rise above it and laugh! |

| A couple of years ago when I was at Target with Thor, I heard a little girl say to her mother while pointing at us. "Oh look Mom, there's a pony in the store". So when they call your dobe a mix or xyz breed at least they are not confusing the species.

| I can't really comment on the ear thing, Rowan was already done by his previous owner. But I have had small children ask if his posts where antlers and a lady in Petsmart say "wow he's so beautiful he has barely any black on him." thanks? He's a red is there supposed to be black? I just smiled and continued on my way. So far I've been pretty lucky with basically no comments at least to my face. It's like the others are saying, not everyone can be pleased. | Depends on the situation as to how I'll react, but your last sentence is also one of the ignorant things people say that the c/d fans have to deal with. I can't recall the last time that Prime mentioned to me how traumatic and painful his ear cropping was. |

One of my former fosters is a floppy eared blue. People were pretty confused. They get really thrown off if you're walking around with a floppy eared/full tailed fawn Dobe! |

| My girl was not cropped, though her tail was docked. She looked every bit the part as a red dobergirl but I still got occasional comments that "oh what is she" or when I told them she was a doberman (pure bred) that she "must be a mix" I would then say um...no she's not. She just has natural ears and is a little bit on the small side.
So now with my new doberman he came cropped from the breeder, and just this week I encountered the "oh I am so glad you kept the ears like that" comment. Ok, whatever!
I agree that big dog ignorance is well rampant. |

I think coat colors/markings are the single thing most of the public notices.
I would politely tell folks what your boy is, and if they argue with you, I'd have some fun with that.
But, sarcasm fuels my soul, and that may not be your style. I just find entertainment value in such things Quote:

I have told folks who are giving me a hard time over my little hairless girl that I'm saving up the money to take her to the vet to find out what made all her hair fall out.
A big silly grin and an offer for them to pet her usually sends them right on their way, at that point

I got him from a breeder in Chicago,, and is it customary for the breeder to do the ears and NOT sell them with their "flops".
This thread was just a testament to how annoyed I get with ppl sometimes. Of course when I take him out I'm not equipped with his registration papers. I'm just saying ppl usually give him and me the side eye when I say he's a done.

Even though I still love the cropped look I'm starting to really like the natural look. If cropping becomes banned in the future I certainly won't give up on the breed. Love it too much.

| Some people are just idiots, I wouldn't give them the time of day I get comments like '...so when will his ears start standing up' which just makes me laugh at their reaction when I tell them they're natural ears and they need surgery to make them stand. I get mostly nice comments about his tail TBH, but there is the odd 'omg dobes look disgusting with a tail. |

Don't get me wrong, Toby has never done anything to warrant that kind of reaction, rather folk here are just plain ignorant and don't want educating otherwise that not all Dobes are the living version of the Resident Evil Zombie Dobes. |
