Then the "human" can make his "dog" do the hunting, and as they get used to the change, the "pet dog" starts to become the master of the "human werewolf" as he figures out how to stay transformed longer and longer... The dog, having his heightened abilities, and his new found ability to use weapons, he becomes a master hunter that can't be stopped. Oh, snap...

Unfortunately, my facetious-meter is functioning poorly today, and I just can't be sure if this is a serious statement.

Huh. Funny that I'm also writing a werewolf novel at the moment. But the sound of things, though, there's little overlap in our tone.

I think a Doberman would be awfully confused if his owner was suddenly also a wolf, possibly frightened and uneasy.

What is the mythology of your werewolves (their reason for existing, when they change, how they change, what they're weak against, how they live, etc.)

I'm also very interested in the answers to these questions:

- Is there some sort of redemption for your character and his dog?

When we were living in Ohio, our country vet could rattle off a string of diseases/parasites/conditions for which our barn cats were at risk due to eating small wild game.

You might like to inquire of a vet as to what the list looks like for a dog eating wild food, regardless of its species. If you do ask about human meat specifically, please post us a photo of the vet's expression when you do.

I like the Cocker Spaniel idea. Maybe a Maltese?

It should be good to be Dog.

OK, I'll bite and take this seriously. I also think that the dog would be freaked out by its master turning into a huge hairy beast. I don't think there'd be a quick easy - oh HEY it's you! moment there...

But, say the dog does figure out that their owner is this beast, and say they were running around together and the werewolf killed a human... I don't think the dog would participate in the killing of an adult human (maybe in the chase but I think it would be confused) but I do think that if there was raw meat hanging around that most dogs would partake. But I've raw-fed my dogs.

I doubt there'd be any health issues from it. Humans don't carry any parasites or things like that like some wild critters might.

All that said, I LOVE the idea of it being a smaller dog too. Or... a wolfhound.

I actually understand the OP wanting to use a Doberman due to the media's past implications and their association with horror due to Resident Evil and Draculas' Doberman, etc. etc. Plus their image is something easy for people to bring up when reading - they're striking looking, and black. If it's presented more as a dog following it's master I don't really see how that would add to the negative image of Dobes - particularly since it's obviously ficion - we've got a werewolf as a main character here.
